A sandbox game is defined by something different: how much room it gives players to experiment with or affect the game space. The labels describe different qualities, so a game can be both.
What makes a game a run-and-gun platformer?
Platforming is about traversal: players move across surfaces such as platforms, stairs, and other environmental elements to reach a destination or objective. That is the definition used in Epic’s Fortnite platformer documentation.

A run-and-gun platformer adds shooting as a central activity alongside that movement. Players typically run and jump through a level while aiming at targets, firing projectiles, and avoiding incoming attacks. Shooting is not just an occasional feature; it is a major part of the challenge.
The term is a conventional genre label, not a universal formal standard. When a game sits near the boundary, describing what players actually do—run, jump, shoot, and progress through levels—is more precise than relying on the label alone.

What does “sandbox game” mean?
In its Fortnite Creative glossary, Epic defines a sandbox game as one that is separated from a larger game so users can modify or experiment with aspects of it. In that context, players can make changes, save them, and share them, as described in the Fortnite glossary.
More broadly, sandbox play gives players latitude to explore possibilities, affect a play space, or produce outcomes through their choices. That freedom still operates within a designed framework: the game’s rules and available tools set limits. Sandbox does not necessarily mean unlimited freedom, an empty world, or no objectives. Game Developer’s history and theory of sandbox gameplay discusses the connection between sandbox design, player agency, experimentation, and responsive systems.

How the two labels differ
| Question | Run-and-gun platformer | Sandbox game |
|---|---|---|
| What does the label describe? | A gameplay structure and combat emphasis | The player’s scope to experiment with or affect a play space and its systems |
| What is the core activity? | Running and jumping through a level while shooting is central | Modifying, exploring, or experimenting through player-directed interaction |
| What constrains play? | A route or level presents movement and combat challenges | Rules and available tools bound the possible interactions, even when many approaches are possible |
| Can it have objectives? | Yes. Reaching a destination or progressing through levels fits the label. | Yes. Objectives can coexist with player agency and experimentation. |
Because one term describes the mechanics at the heart of play and the other describes the latitude players have to shape or explore a space, they are not opposites. A game can have a clearly structured run-and-gun campaign and also include sandbox-like areas or tools for experimentation.
Examples of run-and-gun platformers
A 2024 genre overview from Kelleher Bros. names Contra, Gunstar Heroes, Metal Slug, Sunset Riders, and Cuphead as examples, and identifies Contra III: The Alien Wars as a representative game. These are examples from that overview, not an official or universally fixed taxonomy. The useful test is whether running and jumping through levels and shooting are both central to the play.
