1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRead the entire ingredient list, then check any nearby Contains statement and any separate advisory warning such as “may contain milk.” Check the exact package every time: labels and ingredients can change. If the label does not settle your question, do not buy the snack until you have contacted the manufacturer or distributor named on the package.
How to check a snack label
- Read the full ingredient list. Look for the allergen’s food-source name, including when it appears within an ingredient’s common name. For example, a label may say “buttermilk,” or identify an ingredient as “whey (milk).” Do not rely on front-of-package claims or a highlighted allergen box instead of reading the ingredients. FDA explains how to read food-allergen labels.
- Check the nearby Contains statement. In FDA-regulated packaged foods, a “Contains” statement identifies major allergens used as ingredients. It is usually placed next to or immediately after the ingredient list. It is an additional check, not a substitute for the complete list.
- Read advisory warnings separately. Look for wording such as “may contain milk” or “produced in a facility that also uses milk.” These voluntary statements warn about possible unintended allergen presence, such as cross-contact; they are not the same as a Contains statement for an allergen used as an ingredient.
- Check the exact package you plan to eat. Do not assume a snack is unchanged because you bought it before. Compare the current ingredient list and warnings on the package in your hand.
- Pause if anything is unclear. Do not buy the snack until you have asked the manufacturer or distributor listed on the package what it contains. FDA consumer guidance recommends this step when the label does not resolve a concern: Have Food Allergies? Read the Label.
Which allergens should you look for?
U.S. FDA labeling guidance identifies nine major food allergens: milk, egg, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. Required declarations apply to these allergens and ingredients containing their proteins in FDA-regulated foods, subject to the rules’ scope and exceptions. FDA says these nine allergens account for 90% of allergic reactions in its infographic; that is the infographic’s stated figure, not a guarantee about any individual’s risk. See the FDA’s overview of food allergies and labeling.

Sesame and older stock
Sesame became the ninth major food allergen on January 1, 2023. FDA notes that some products already in distribution or stock may not declare sesame, so ask the manufacturer if you are unsure about a product’s contents. FDA’s food-allergy guidance explains the change.

Advisory statements are voluntary, so manufacturers do not all use them. Their absence does not guarantee that cross-contact is impossible, and their presence does not tell you a quantified amount of allergen in the food. FDA says advisory wording should be truthful and not misleading, and should not replace preventive manufacturing practices. FDA’s industry guidance on food-allergen labeling covers these claims and statements.
#1 Best Overall
- IDENTIFY WHICH FOODS MAY BE CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS. Food intolerances happen when your gut microbiome and digestive enzymes can’t break down a food ingredient. Although gluten and lactose are the most common issues, intolerances can happen with any food item. When these intolerances go unchecked, symptoms like headaches, gas, diarrhea, acne, and bloating may develop.
- TESTS 800 COMMON FOOD ITEMS. Our food intolerance test for adults and children covers 14 major food categories: dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, seafood, nuts, sweeteners, spices, fats, oils, mushrooms, superfoods, and preservatives.
- HOW IT WORKS. (1) Register your test kit on the 5Strands website or mobile app (2) Collect 10-15 strands of hair. (3) Send your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid shipping materials. (4) Once your sample is received, we’ll email you the results within 4 days. After 60 days, your hair sample will be permanently disposed of.
- EASY TO READ RESULTS. Each food item is labeled as Insignificant, Mild, Moderate, or Severe to help guide your elimination plan. This gives you clear directions to begin removing severe intolerance foods, moderate your intake of mid-level triggers, and keep safe foods in rotation to support gut health, digestion, and symptom relief.
- 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.
Likewise, a front-label claim such as “milk-free” is not a replacement for checking the complete, current ingredient list. FDA expects voluntary allergen-free claims to be truthful and not misleading, but does not have a specific regulation defining “free” for every major allergen in the guidance cited here.
Where packaged-food label rules may not answer the question
This guidance concerns U.S. foods regulated by FDA. Some foods are regulated by other federal agencies, and FDA’s cited packaged-food requirement does not apply in the same way to food put into a container after a customer orders it at the point of purchase. For unpackaged or made-to-order food, ask the seller or responsible business for allergen information rather than assuming the ordinary packaged-label rules apply. FDA describes the scope and exceptions in its Food Allergies guidance.

When a label claim is not enough
A “dairy-free” or similar front-label claim should not be treated as a substitute for checking ingredients and contacting the manufacturer when uncertainty remains. In a 2023 consumer update about specific dark-chocolate products, FDA reported milk levels ranging from 600 to 3,100 parts per million. Those findings concern the products discussed in that update; they are not a general estimate for snacks or a safe-threshold guide. Read FDA’s update on milk in some dark chocolate labeled dairy-free.

- UNCOVER FOOD INTOLERANCES & ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITIES CAUSING GUT & SKIN ISSUES. Symptoms like fatigue, acne breakouts, gas, diarrhea, and headaches are most likely not random or allergy-related - they’re often caused by hidden food intolerances and environmental sensitivities. Food intolerances occur when the gut microbiome can’t digest an ingredient correctly, and environmental sensitivities develop when your body has a negative response when exposed to specific items in your indoor and outdoor environment. Testing is the only way to pinpoint specific dietary and lifestyle triggers so you’re not left guessing.
- TESTS 658 FOODS & 282 ENVIRONMENTAL ITEMS. Your hair sample is tested against key food categories including dairy, veggies, fruits, grains, meats, seafood, nuts, sweeteners, spices, fats, oils, mushrooms, superfoods, drinks, and preservatives. It’s also tested against indoor and outdoor items including animals, grasses, trees, flowers, mold, pollen, chemicals, fabrics, insects, and lotions.
