For routing traffic from one browser or app, a proxy may be enough. But “proxy” covers different designs, and neither option guarantees anonymity or access to a streaming catalog. The right choice depends on which traffic is covered, what the service encrypts, and which operator you trust.
VPN vs. proxy at a glance
| Question | VPN | Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| What traffic does it route? | A VPN app often routes device traffic through a tunnel, subject to its operating mode, split tunneling, and exclusions. | Often limited to the browser or app configured to use it; coverage depends on the implementation. |
| Does it encrypt traffic? | VPN tunneling is designed to encrypt traffic between the device and the VPN endpoint. | It varies. Some proxies add no encryption; others use encrypted tunnels. |
| Who handles connection information? | The VPN operator becomes a party trusted with tunneled traffic and related connection information. | The proxy operator may see connection information or destinations, depending on its design and encryption layers. |
| Does it hide your identity from websites? | It can replace your apparent source IP with the VPN’s egress IP, but sites may still recognize accounts, cookies, or browser fingerprints. | It can replace the apparent source IP with the proxy’s egress IP, but does not by itself make you anonymous. |
| Can it change streaming access? | It may change the IP address a platform sees; the platform can block known VPN addresses. | It may change the IP address a platform sees; the platform can block known proxy addresses. |
These are general patterns, not guarantees for every service or setup. For a plain-language overview of the distinction, see Kaspersky’s VPN-versus-proxy comparison.

How the privacy trade-off works
A VPN shifts trust to its operator
When traffic is routed through a VPN, your local network or internet provider may have less visibility into the contents of that tunneled traffic. The VPN operator, however, handles the connection at the other end and may be able to observe some connection metadata or destinations, depending on the service and how other encryption layers are used. A VPN is therefore a change in who you trust, not a way to remove trust from the connection.
Coverage also depends on configuration. Split tunneling, app exclusions, DNS routing, and leaks can affect what actually travels through the tunnel. Check the VPN app’s routing settings and test the specific device and apps you care about rather than assuming every connection is covered. Kaspersky’s overview discusses VPN encryption and the importance of provider logging, but its general explanation does not establish how every provider handles traffic.

“Proxy” does not mean “unencrypted”
Many basic proxies do not add encryption between your device and the proxy, although HTTPS can still encrypt web content between your browser and a website. Other proxies use encrypted tunnels, so the protocol and service matter more than the label.
Cloudflare’s documentation describes one specific example: its Privacy Proxy uses MASQUE, including HTTP CONNECT for TCP and CONNECT-UDP for UDP, over HTTP/2 and HTTP/3. Cloudflare says the proxy can learn the destination hostname and port, but not request paths or content inside the encrypted tunnel; the destination sees Cloudflare’s egress IP rather than the client’s real IP. Those details describe Cloudflare Privacy Proxy, not proxies in general. Cloudflare’s service overview says it is available only to Enterprise customers; its technical explanation was last updated April 21, 2026.

Check scope, not just the product name
A proxy setting inside a browser may cover only that browser. Mozilla’s Firefox privacy notice says its proxy feature proxies Firefox network traffic, not traffic from other applications, and does not by itself make browsing fully anonymous. A VPN app can have broader device coverage, but its operating mode and exclusions still matter. Verify which apps and traffic types are included on your own device.
IP masking is not anonymity
A changed egress IP can make a website see the VPN or proxy address instead of your usual public IP. It does not prevent a site from identifying an account you sign into, recognizing cookies, or using browser fingerprinting. Treat IP masking as one privacy measure, not a guarantee that browsing cannot be linked to you.

Will a VPN or proxy work for streaming?
Either tool may change the IP address a streaming platform sees, but platforms can identify and block known VPN or proxy addresses. Results vary by service, country, server address, plan, and time; there is no reliable guarantee that either tool will unlock a particular show or regional catalog. A secondary comparison from Top10VPN, updated March 4, 2026, also notes that streaming services block proxy connections: VPN vs. Proxy: What’s the Difference?
Before relying on a VPN or proxy, check the streaming service’s current terms and supported availability for your location. Do not assume that changing a virtual location is guaranteed to work or permitted by the service. A Smart DNS service, browser proxy, SOCKS proxy, and full-device VPN tunnel route traffic differently; one should not be treated as interchangeable with another.

Which should you choose?
Choose a VPN when you need broad device coverage
A VPN is the more natural option when you want a device-wide encrypted tunnel, provided the app actually routes the traffic you mean to protect and you accept the provider’s data practices. Review the provider’s policy and look for independent verification where available. A privacy policy is the provider’s statement about its practices, not proof of how it behaves.

For example, Proton VPN’s policy, modified July 30, 2025, says the company does not log users’ traffic or communication content and that its VPN servers are encrypted. Those are Proton’s own policy statements; they do not establish comparative superiority or guarantee streaming access. Read the Proton VPN privacy policy directly.

Choose a proxy when you need a specific app route
A proxy can make sense when you want to route traffic from one configured browser or application, or when a particular privacy relay has a design suited to your needs. Confirm the proxy’s protocol, whether its connection to the proxy is encrypted, which traffic it covers, and what its operator can observe. Do not infer those details from the word “proxy” alone.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before deciding
- Coverage: Does it route the browser, a single app, or device traffic? Are there exclusions?
- Encryption: What is encrypted between your device and the service, and what encryption remains in place to the destination?
- Data handling: What does the operator say it collects, and is there independent verification?
- Compatibility: Does it work on the specific device and app you need?
- Streaming rules: Does the platform support the content in your location, and what do its current terms say?
