Match the system name printed on the battery to the system name on the tool: M12 to M12, M18 to M18, and MX FUEL to MX FUEL. Milwaukee treats these as dedicated battery systems, so matching voltage or having a charger that accepts multiple systems does not mean the packs fit each other’s tools.
How to check battery compatibility
- Find the system marking on the tool. Look for M12, M18, or MX FUEL on the tool or its product label.
- Check the battery marking. Read the system name on the pack itself.
- Match the names. Milwaukee’s guidance is M12 batteries with M12 tools, M18 batteries with M18 tools, and MX FUEL batteries with MX FUEL equipment. See Milwaukee’s battery compatibility FAQ and battery selection guidance.
- Confirm the exact model if anything is unclear. Check the tool’s current Milwaukee product page or manual, especially for an unusual system marking or unidentified model.
Are M12 and M18 batteries interchangeable?
No general cross-compatibility is established between the two systems: an M12 battery is not an M18 tool battery, and an M18 battery is not an M12 tool battery. Milwaukee describes packs as interchangeable within their dedicated power-tool system, rather than across system labels.

Does an older Milwaukee battery work with a newer tool?
Milwaukee describes batteries as backward and forward compatible within their system. That supports using an older pack with a newer tool when both carry the same system marking. For an unusual or unidentified model, use that tool’s manual or product page as the final check rather than relying on age or appearance.

Charger compatibility and tool compatibility are separate questions. Milwaukee’s M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger, model 48-59-1812, accepts both M12 and M18 battery packs, but that does not make an M12 pack fit an M18 tool. What if the label says M4 or M28?
Do not infer compatibility from the M12, M18, and MX FUEL matching rule. Milwaukee’s selection guidance identifies M4 and M28 as exceptions to that overview, and it does not establish a general cross-compatibility rule for them. Look up the exact tool model in its Milwaukee manual or product page.

Once the system matches, pack size and application are separate considerations—not a different compatibility standard. Milwaukee describes M18 CP packs as compact, XC packs as a balance of size, weight, power, and runtime, and HD packs as larger with higher power and longer runtime. Choose based on the tool’s instructions and the size, weight, and runtime you want; no one pack size is universally right for every tool or user.
