If one printing qualifies, any printing of that card may be played, including an older version. A card can still be rejected when its name is banned or when the complete deck breaks construction limits.
The current pool is Foundations (FDN) plus DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, and FRA. The practical workflow below separates card legality from deck legality and explains why a Planar Standard result can differ from Wizards’ sanctioned Standard result.

What Planar Standard legality means
Planar Standard is a community format with its own legal-set list, ban list, rotation schedule, and deck-building rules. Do not treat the word “Standard” on a card database or tournament document as proof that a card belongs to Planar Standard. The Planar Standard rules page is the controlling reference for this format; it is community-maintained and can be updated through community announcements.

A set code is useful for identifying a printing, but legality ultimately follows the card-name reprint rule described below rather than the age or appearance of the copy in your hand.

The codes above are the identifiers you should compare with a card database’s printing list. A card does not become legal merely because it has a similar-looking expansion symbol, appears in a product associated with Standard, or is accepted by a checker built for another format.
Step-by-step: check one card
1. Identify the card name and every printing
Start with the exact card name, including punctuation and alternate names shown on the card. Then inspect the card’s complete printing history in Gatherer, which Wizards describes as “the official Magic Card Database” and recommends for specific card rulings and browsing the game’s history. A reliable card database can help you find set codes and collector information, but Gatherer is a card-information source, not the authority that defines the Planar Standard pool.
Looking only at the copy you own is the most common mistake. An older card may be legal because the same name was printed in Foundations or one of the six rotating sets. Conversely, a card that looks new may have a special-product printing that does not place the name in the Planar Standard pool.
2. Compare the printings with the seven legal sets
Review the printing list and look specifically for FDN, DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, or FRA. You only need one qualifying printing to pass this part of the test. If no printing appears in those sets, the card is not Planar Standard-legal, even if it is legal in Wizards’ Standard, Commander, another community format, or a digital format.
Record the set code you found. Keeping that evidence beside a deck list helps when a checker reports an unfamiliar error and prevents confusion between similarly named sets or alternate-art products.

3. Apply the reprint rule to the physical copy
The Planar Standard format rules state: “A card is legal if any printing of it is in a legal set, and then any printing of it may be played.” This makes the test card-name based after a qualifying reprint is found. For example, the rules page identifies Llanowar Elves (M19) as legal because Llanowar Elves appears in Foundations. The M19 copy does not need to be replaced by a Foundations copy.
This rule covers older borders, languages, foils, alternate-art versions, and other printings of the same card name, provided the card is otherwise identifiable and the format’s rules do not impose a separate product restriction. It does not rescue a different card with a similar name, a token, an emblem, or a card whose name has been changed by an erratum.

4. Check the live Planar Standard ban list
Set eligibility is not the final decision. The current Planar Standard rules page lists Cori-Steel Cutter as banned. A printing in a legal set does not override that ban, so the card cannot be used in a Planar Standard deck while the ban remains in force.
Check the ban list immediately before submitting a deck or entering an event. A card can move from legal to banned without its printing history changing, and a database’s set filter may not show a format-specific ban.
5. Test the complete deck
For a full list, paste the deck into the Planar Standard card-list checker. The checker page says that no account is required. Use it after you have cleaned up names and quantities, because a parser error can be caused by spelling or formatting rather than by format legality.

Then verify the construction rules yourself:
- The maindeck must contain at least 60 cards.
- The sideboard may contain no more than 15 cards.
- You may play up to four copies of a card name across the maindeck and sideboard combined.
- Basic lands are exempt from the four-copy limit.
The four-copy rule counts names, not artwork, set codes, languages, or foil status. Four copies of an older printing and four copies of a newer printing are eight copies of the same card name for this purpose, not two separate allowances.

Planar Standard’s reprint rule is designed to make a qualifying reprint apply to the whole card name. Suppose a creature was originally printed several years ago and later appears in Foundations. The Foundations appearance places the name in the current pool. You can use the original printing, the Foundations printing, or another printing of that same name, subject to the ban list and ordinary card-identification rules.
This is different from asking whether the exact expansion symbol on your copy belongs to the pool. The symbol is important when you search for a qualifying printing, but once one is found, the format allows any printing. A checker that rejects an older set code may be applying a simple set filter instead of the Planar Standard reprint rule; verify the card name against the format rules before replacing cards.
Rotation: why today’s answer can change
Planar Standard rotation follows the first Universes Within set release of each year. When that release occurs, the previous year’s Universes Within sets leave the rotating portion of the pool. Foundations is the current Core set in the listed pool, while DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, and FRA are the rotating sets shown by the current rules page.
Rotation is separate from a ban. Rotation removes sets according to the schedule; a ban removes a card name regardless of which legal-set printing made it eligible. A card can therefore stop being legal because its qualifying set rotated, or remain in a legal set but become unusable because it was banned.

Because the schedule is tied to the first Universes Within release rather than a personal calendar or a product’s marketing date, check the live Planar Standard rules page when a new set is released or an event announces a format update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Diagnosing a rejected card or deck
The checker says the set is not legal
First, search the card’s other printings. The submitted copy may show an old set code even though the name has a printing in one of the seven current sets. If a qualifying printing exists, the reprint rule permits the submitted copy. If none exists, the card is outside the pool.
The card has a legal printing but is still rejected
Check the ban list for the exact card name. Cori-Steel Cutter is the current listed Planar Standard ban. Also check that the deck checker is set to Planar Standard rather than Wizards Standard, a different community format, or a custom historical season.
The list fails even though each card is legal
Inspect deck construction separately from card eligibility. Count the maindeck, sideboard, and copies by card name. A 59-card maindeck, a 16-card sideboard, or a fifth copy split between the two zones can fail validation even when every individual card is legal. Basic lands are the only stated exception to the four-copy limit.
The checker cannot find a card name
Use the card’s official name as shown in Gatherer. Remove set labels, collector numbers, rarity notes, commentary, and extra punctuation from the list entry unless the checker’s syntax specifically requires them. Alternate-art and language versions should be entered under the same card name.

A tournament organizer gives a different answer
Ask which rules document governs that event. Planar Standard and Wizards-sanctioned Standard are not interchangeable. A local event may also announce a date-specific snapshot of the pool. Save the event’s format notice and compare it with the current Planar Standard rules page before changing a deck.
Planar Standard versus Wizards’ sanctioned Standard
Wizards’ Magic Tournament Rules (MTR) provide useful context but do not define Planar Standard. In MTR section 6.3, effective February 27, 2026, Wizards states: “Any cards with expansion symbols from the above sets are legal to play in Standard, even if they are not available in that set’s play booster (or draft booster for sets released before February 2, 2024).” The MTR also allows older cards sharing a name with a Standard-legal card.
Those sanctioned-Standard rules explain why an older printing can often be used in an official Standard event, but the Planar Standard rules page controls the community format’s set list, bans, rotation, and checker. Do not substitute Wizards’ list for Planar Standard’s seven-set pool.

The difference is visible in the ban lists. Wizards’ August 10, 2026 sanctioned-Standard announcement listed Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser’s Talent, and Gran-Gran as Standard bans. Planar Standard separately lists Cori-Steel Cutter. Wizards’ October 12, 2026 announcement reported no Standard changes and described the post-August environment as more diverse and healthy; that announcement still does not replace Planar Standard’s live rules.
Choosing the right verification method
| Method | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Planar Standard rules page | Final authority for the legal sets, bans, rotation, deck limits, and the paste-in checker | Community-maintained; updates may arrive through community announcements |
| Gatherer | Finding all printings, official names, and card rulings | It does not define the Planar Standard pool |
| Wizards MTR | Understanding sanctioned Wizards Standard and tournament policy | It governs Wizards-sanctioned Standard, not Planar Standard |
Use these sources in that order when a result conflicts: establish the card’s identity and printings in Gatherer, apply the Planar Standard set and reprint rules, check the Planar ban list, and use the checker for the assembled deck. Consult the MTR only when the event is explicitly sanctioned Wizards Standard or when you need to understand the broader tournament rule.
A printable legality checklist
- Write the exact card name from the card or Gatherer.
- Open the complete printing list and note every set code.
- Look for
FDN,DFT,TDM,EOE,ECL,SOS, orFRA. - If at least one appears, treat every printing of that card name as eligible under the Planar Standard reprint rule.
- Search the current Planar Standard ban list, including Cori-Steel Cutter.
- Paste the finished deck into the no-account Planar Standard checker.
- Confirm a 60-card-or-larger maindeck, a sideboard of 15 cards or fewer, and no more than four copies of any nonbasic card name across both zones.
- When an event date or announcement is involved, verify that rotation or a new ban has not changed the answer.
This process separates four questions that are often mistakenly combined: whether the card name has a qualifying printing, whether the card is banned, whether the list obeys construction limits, and whether the event is actually using Planar Standard. Keeping those questions separate is the fastest way to resolve a disputed legality result.
