A spec URL shown on an issue, a preview, or a successful save proves that the spec is linked or displayed—not that a workflow validator enforces it. Identify the validator, trace its spec source, then run a controlled request that should pass and one that should fail.
First identify what “Jira validator” means
Jira can be involved in several different kinds of validation. A workflow validator runs during a workflow transition; an integration or library may validate test or live HTTP requests; and Jira’s own REST API may validate Jira data. These are separate components, and evidence about one does not establish what another does.

- Record the Jira deployment (Cloud or Data Center), the app or library name and version, and the event that should trigger validation.
- Pin down the expected behavior: a workflow transition blocked, an API test rejected, or a live request checked.
- Do not treat Jira REST API operations for validating project keys or names as evidence about OpenAPI enforcement in a workflow. Atlassian documents those as project-metadata operations: Jira Cloud project key validation.
Find the exact spec binding
Inspect the validator’s configuration, app settings, source code, and logs. Look for the specification’s actual input—such as a URL, local file, classpath resource, or inline content—and identify the version or hash if available. If you cannot find a binding from the validator to a spec, you have not yet established that it reads one.

The Atlassian OpenAPI Request Validator is one specific Java library, not a universal Jira workflow feature. Its documentation describes URL, file, classpath, and inline spec sources. Those capabilities matter only if your integration is actually using that library.
A Jira issue may show an OpenAPI URL and let a user preview or save the specification. Swagger Editor and Swagger UI for Jira document that display-oriented workflow: Swagger UI for Jira. A link, preview, or saved issue field shows association or presentation; it does not, on its own, show that a validator enforces the document.
Confirm the validator can read the configured spec
Check that the configured URL or file is reachable from the validator’s execution environment, using the credentials available to it. A URL that opens in your browser may still fail from a server because of network restrictions, authentication, TLS, or reference-resolution settings. Confirm that the validator loads the intended version, rather than a stale copy or a URL that redirects to different content.

The Atlassian library documentation describes JSON and YAML inputs and configurable reference resolution. It also lists Swagger/OpenAPI v2 and OpenAPI v3 support, with v3.1 described as partial on the project page. Do not assume another app supports the same formats or features; check the documentation and version for the component you identified.

Use the same validator, environment, and execution route for both tests. Start with a known-good example that matches the spec, then change one thing that clearly violates an explicit rule. The strongest simple negative tests are a nonexistent path, an unsupported method, a missing required field, or an invalid body value specified by the schema.

- Choose one operation in the spec and prepare a request that satisfies its path, method, required parameters, and body rules.
- Run it through the exact workflow, test harness, or traffic path expected to invoke the validator. Record the result and any report.
- Change one condition only—for example, remove a required body field or use a path that is absent from the spec—and repeat the run.
- Compare the results. Look for a rejection or finding that identifies the violated rule, rather than relying only on a generic failure or a successful transition.
- If safe, repeat in a test environment after changing one distinctive constraint in a disposable copy of the spec. A changed outcome for the same input is strong evidence that the active validator is reading that copy.
The Atlassian library documents checks including path and method matching, parameters, request bodies, required inputs, security requirements, and response status, headers, and body. It also describes reports with message keys, messages, severity, and contextual details. These are useful signs when—and only when—that library is the component under test.

- Good request passes; bad request is rejected with a spec-related finding: this supports the narrow conclusion that the validator applied the identified spec and rule on that execution path.
- Both requests pass: first check whether validation ran at all, whether it loaded the expected spec version, and whether the tested rule is supported. Also inspect severity settings, whitelists, and ignored errors; a finding may be non-blocking or suppressed.
- Both requests fail: the failure may come from another layer, such as authentication or request handling. Check the validator’s report or logs for a spec-related rule before attributing it to OpenAPI validation.
- The workflow transition succeeds: that alone does not prove the spec was not read. The validator may be configured to warn rather than block, may not run on that transition, or may have filtered the mismatch.
State the result precisely: for example, “The validator loaded spec X and rejected test Y for rule Z on this workflow.” A single passing mismatch does not prove that no spec is ever read, just as a displayed spec URL does not prove enforcement.
Compare validators on the dimensions that affect the check
If more than one app or validation layer is involved, compare the components rather than treating them as interchangeable.
