Open the phone’s camera app and test every camera view it offers. Take photos in bright and dim light, tap to focus on nearby and distant subjects, inspect the saved images, and record and play back a short video with sound. Clean the camera glass and repeat any check that looks wrong. This can reveal visible problems, but a quick inspection cannot certify the camera or rule out intermittent faults.
1. Inspect the camera glass and remove obstructions
Before judging image quality, look for cracked or scratched camera glass, dirt, condensation, or anything blocking the camera area. Remove a case or lens protector if it covers any part of the cameras. Gently wipe the exterior glass with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Google notes that dirt or an obstruction can cause blur, halos, lines, and color distortions (Google Pixel Camera Help).

If you still see a problem after cleaning, do not assume the cloth can fix it: it cannot repair cracked glass, internal dust, condensation, or a faulty camera.
2. Test every camera view in the camera app
Use the phone’s own camera app and switch through the views it actually offers. Check the main rear camera, ultra-wide, telephoto, and front camera if present; not every phone has every lens, and rear cameras can behave differently. Apple advises checking the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras on iPhone models that have them, while Swappa’s checklist also recommends testing available lenses and the front camera (Apple Support; Swappa).

For each view, take at least one photo rather than relying only on the live preview. A browser-based camera preview may not expose every physical camera and cannot automatically verify focus, clarity, stabilization, spots, or distortion.
3. Check focus and image detail
Photograph a detailed subject both close up and farther away. Tap the subject on screen to focus, take the picture, then open the saved image and inspect it. Look for persistent softness or haze, fixed dark marks, and focus that will not settle. Repeat the shot after cleaning the glass and removing anything covering it.

Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance recommends taking photos in low and bright light and tapping the area you want in focus (Apple Support). A single soft image does not identify the cause: cleaning, refocusing, or software steps may resolve some quality problems, and a visible symptom alone does not prove a camera module has failed (Google Pixel Camera Help).

4. Try bright, dim, and high-contrast scenes
Take one photo in bright light and another in dim light. Include a scene with both bright and shaded areas so you can see whether useful detail remains in highlights and shadows. If possible, photograph a person facing toward the light and then with the light behind them. Review the saved photos rather than judging the phone from one flattering showroom image. Apple recommends checking both low- and bright-light photos; OPPO also recommends examining results in different conditions (Apple Support; OPPO).

5. Compare framing and portraits
Try the standard view, a wider view, and optical telephoto if the phone offers it. For portraits, inspect facial detail, color, exposure, and the edges around the person instead of treating background blur as the only measure. OPPO suggests photographing the same person at different distances and checking features such as eyes, hair, texture, and subject edges (OPPO).
6. Record a clip and check its sound
Record a short video, move the phone naturally, then play the clip back. Listen for clear sound and watch for visible interruptions or instability. Apple recommends recording and watching a video as part of its pre-owned iPhone checks (Apple Support). There is no universal pass threshold for stabilization in this kind of quick inspection, so note what you can see rather than treating it as a diagnosis.

7. Use a built-in check when available
Samsung phones
On supported Samsung devices, open Samsung Members → Support → Phone diagnostics → Camera test. Samsung’s support page describes this route; menu names and availability may vary by device or region (Samsung Saudi Arabia Support, updated April 15, 2026).

How to compare two phones fairly
Use the same subject and similar lighting on both phones. Keep settings at their ordinary defaults for a typical-use comparison, and make the same kinds of shots with each device:
- Each available rear-camera view and the front camera
- A detailed subject at near and farther distances
- Bright, dim, and high-contrast scenes
- A portrait, if portraits matter to you
- A short video that you play back and listen to
This is a practical comparison, not a laboratory score. Tom’s Guide describes comparing common landscapes, indoor and outdoor scenes, portraits, and selfies across day and night conditions, testing each lens and using default settings; choose subjects that reflect how you expect to use the phone (Tom’s Guide).
When to pause the purchase
If the same blur, mark, or instability remains after you remove obstructions and clean the camera glass, treat it as an unresolved warning. Ask for more time to inspect the phone or have it evaluated by a qualified technician before buying. A successful preview or one clear photo does not establish that every camera function is healthy, predict future reliability, or rule out a fault that appears only intermittently. Swappa also recommends a broader used-phone inspection, not just a camera check (Swappa).
