Google Wifi and Nest Wifi are both Wi-Fi 5 mesh systems managed in the Google Home app. Nest Wifi is the faster, higher-coverage generation according to Google, and its points add a speaker with voice assistant; the Nest Wifi router itself has no speaker. Google Wifi points can join a Nest Wifi network, but neither system is compatible with the newer Nest Wifi Pro. Google no longer sells either older system directly, so check the exact model and included units when considering a marketplace listing.
Google Wifi vs. Nest Wifi: what’s the difference?
The key distinction is that Nest Wifi combines a more capable router with optional speaker-equipped points, while Google Wifi points are simpler mesh units with Ethernet ports. Both are dual-band Wi-Fi 5 systems—not Wi-Fi 6 systems—and both use Google Home for setup and management.

Google’s product comparison and technical specifications describe the systems. Google states that Nest Wifi is faster and provides more coverage than Google Wifi, but the official material does not provide a controlled head-to-head speed or coverage test. These specifications are not a promise of the speeds a particular home will achieve.

Google lists coverage of up to 1,500 square feet per Google Wifi point. The figure is a maximum estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual home. Walls, building materials, layout, broadband speed, and point placement all affect coverage. Google notes that larger homes, thick walls, and long or narrow layouts may require extra points. See Google’s technical specifications and coverage guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
For Nest Wifi, Google’s planning guidance uses bedrooms rather than a square-foot figure: a router for a one-to-two-bedroom home, a router and one point for a two-to-three-bedroom home, and a router and two points for a home with three or more bedrooms. These are planning categories, not a directly comparable coverage measurement.
Google also says a Nest Wifi router and point can each handle up to 100 connected devices when each device uses a maximum data rate of 1 Mbps. That condition matters: it should not be read as a general guarantee that either unit will deliver strong performance to 100 devices under typical use. Wi-Fi speed also varies by device, distance, frequency, and physical barriers. Google recommends moving a device closer, placing points in more open locations, and checking placement with a mesh test; its speed guidance explains these factors.

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Does Nest Wifi have a speaker?
The Nest Wifi point has a speaker and voice assistant. The Nest Wifi router does not. This feature belongs specifically to the point, so confirm which device a listing includes if speaker functionality matters. Google Wifi points do not include this smart-speaker feature.

Yes. Google lists Google Wifi points as compatible with a network that includes Nest Wifi routers and points. This can be useful if you already own Google Wifi and want to add compatible coverage. Confirm the exact model before buying: Nest Wifi Pro is a separate Wi-Fi 6E generation and cannot join Google Wifi or Nest Wifi networks. The distinction is laid out in Google’s compatibility comparison.

- Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
- Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
- Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
- Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
Which system has Ethernet ports?
Each Google Wifi point has two Gigabit Ethernet ports. The Nest Wifi router has WAN and LAN Ethernet ports, but the Nest Wifi point has none. If a device needs a wired connection, make sure the unit providing that connection has an available port.
For more wired LAN connections, Google says an Ethernet switch can connect to a Google Wifi point or a Nest Wifi router. Google recommends an unmanaged switch, or configuring a managed switch appropriately. A switch adds wired ports; it does not extend wireless coverage. See Google’s Ethernet-switch instructions.

How do you set up Google Wifi or Nest Wifi?
Both systems use the Google Home app. You need a working modem connected to the internet. Google recommends putting the router in plain view at about eye level, rather than tucked away, to help it provide a strong signal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Connect a working modem to the internet.
- Place the Google Wifi or Nest Wifi router in an open, visible location at about eye level.
- Use the Google Home app to set up the router and add compatible points.
- Check point placement with a mesh test and adjust locations if coverage or speed is weak.
Google advises buying Wifi devices in the country where they will be used because wireless regulations vary. Using a device from another country may create compatibility issues or limit Google’s support. See Google’s setup guidance.

- 1 Wi-Fi router plugs into your internet provider’s modem to create your Wi-Fi network. The other extends the wireless network and keeps your connection fast to devices in every room. For more coverage, add Nest Wifi routers or points to your system.
- Nest Wifi routers are strong enough to handle up to 200 connected devices, and fast enough to stream multiple 4K videos at a time.[2] Compatible with Google Wifi; Ethernet ports included on each router. 15W power adapter.
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wi-Fi remains fast.[3] Walk from room to room on a video call with an uninterrupted signal. Nest Wifi automatically updates itself to get new features and help your network stay safe and sound.
Is Google Wifi discontinued, and what should buyers check?
Yes. Google’s product comparison page says: “Important: Nest Wifi and Google Wifi are no longer sold by Google.” The statement applies to Google’s direct sales; it does not establish whether a particular marketplace seller has stock. Availability and condition depend on the listing.
Quick Recap
- Check whether the item is Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, or Nest Wifi Pro; the Pro model is not compatible with the older systems.
- Confirm whether the device is new, refurbished, or used.
- Check exactly what is included: a router and the number of points you need, not just a product-family name.
- For wired connections, confirm that the included unit has Ethernet ports; Nest Wifi points do not.
