A GTA 5 mod is compatible only when three things line up: the PC edition you installed (Legacy or Enhanced), the exact executable build in GTA5.exe, and every loader or framework the mod requires. The title “GTA V” on a download page is not enough. Check your executable, compare it with the mod author’s supported-version notes, verify each dependency, and test in Story Mode with a rollback path.
What “compatible” means for a GTA 5 mod
Compatibility is not a single yes-or-no property attached to a mod file. It is a match between your installation and the assumptions made by the mod’s author.

- Edition: The instructions must target the PC edition you own. Mod pages may distinguish Legacy and Enhanced; support for one edition cannot be assumed for the other.
- Executable build: The mod and its loader may support only particular versions of
GTA5.exe. A game update can change that executable even when the mod archive has not changed. - Dependencies: Script and archive mods can require different loaders, libraries or configuration files. Every required component must support your edition and executable build.
- Installation method: Archive replacements and script files have different failure modes. A correct version match can still fail if files are placed in the wrong path.
Use the mod’s complete requirements and installation sections, not just its headline or download button. The practical goal is to establish a chain of support from your edition and executable through each dependency to the mod itself.

Identify the GTA 5 edition you have installed
Legacy and Enhanced are separate targets
Community modding documentation treats Legacy and Enhanced as distinct PC editions. A mod built for one does not automatically work in the other, even though both are commonly described as “GTA V” or “GTA 5.” Look for an explicit edition statement in the mod’s description, requirements, comments or installation notes.

If the page says “Legacy only,” “Enhanced only,” or names a particular edition, treat that as a hard requirement. If it says nothing, compatibility is unconfirmed; do not infer support from screenshots, a similar file name or the fact that the game launches.
Record the edition before downloading
- Note the edition shown by your game launcher or installation entry.
- Check whether the mod page names the same edition.
- Check the edition supported by every required loader or framework.
- Keep Legacy and Enhanced mod folders separate if you maintain both installations.
Edition support is the first filter. If it does not match, an executable-version comparison will not make the mod compatible.
Find your GTA5.exe version in Windows
For version-dependent tools and scripts, use the executable’s file version rather than the version shown for GTA Online. A community version-check guide specifically distinguishes the two; the executable version is the value used when matching many mod tools.

- Open Windows File Explorer and browse to the folder containing
GTA5.exe. - Right-click
GTA5.exeand choose Properties. - Open the Details tab.
- Read the value labeled File version and copy it exactly, including all number groups.
- Record the date you checked it, especially if the game has updated recently.
Do not substitute a GTA Online version, launcher label or a version number copied from another computer. The example build shown in older community instructions is not a current-support recommendation; your own File version is the value that must be compared.
Why the executable value matters
Script loaders hook into the game executable. When Rockstar distributes an update, the executable can change while a mod’s files remain unchanged. A loader or script that worked yesterday may therefore stop loading after an update until its maintainer publishes a compatible release.

Compare the executable with the mod’s stated support
With the File version recorded, return to the mod’s page and read the entire requirements, compatibility and installation sections.

Match your recorded value to the author’s wording. “Works on the latest version” is less precise than an explicit build range and can become stale after a patch. If the page lists a maximum supported build below yours, treat the mod as incompatible until the author updates it. If no build information exists, label the result unknown rather than compatible.
Check every dependency, not just the mod page
Script Hook V for ASI-based mods
Many ASI-based modifications rely on Script Hook V. Verify that the Script Hook V release you intend to install supports both your edition and your GTA5.exe build. The mod’s page may mention Script Hook V without stating its current support, so read the loader’s own release information as well.
ScriptHookVDotNet for .NET scripts
.NET scripts commonly require ScriptHookVDotNet rather than the same library used by ASI plugins. Check the exact ScriptHookVDotNet requirement, its supported edition and its release notes. Installing Script Hook V alone does not satisfy a ScriptHookVDotNet requirement.
Other libraries and configuration files
Some projects list additional script libraries, gameconfig files or archive tools. Treat each as an independent compatibility check. A mod is installable only when all required components can run on the same edition and executable build.

Do not rely on a third-party build table as a definitive answer to current support. A community information hub may be useful for orientation, but confirm the exact release against the project maintainer’s current release information before installing it.

For archive-based modifications, OpenIV’s published instructions describe a safer arrangement: make changes inside a separate mods folder whose archive paths mirror the originals. The original game files remain unchanged, so you can disable the modification layer and return to the original files without rebuilding the installation.
- Install and open OpenIV for the correct GTA 5 edition.
- Enable the editor’s modification mode when prompted.
- Create or use the dedicated
modsfolder as described by OpenIV. - Mirror the original archive path inside that folder.
- Copy or replace only the files specified by the mod author.
- Keep a note of every archive and file changed.
- Test the result in Story Mode before adding another archive modification.
OpenIV’s instructions also explain that disabling OpenIV.ASI or the ASI Loader can return the game to its original files. The exact switch depends on your installation, so follow the tool’s current instructions rather than deleting original archives.
Why this arrangement helps with compatibility testing
If the mod fails, you can disable the modification layer and test the base game. That separates an incompatible archive edit from a damaged original installation and gives you a clean rollback path.
Install and test in a controlled order
Do not install a large collection and then guess which component failed. Use a staged process that leaves a known-good state.

- Back up or preserve the original installation. Use the separate
modsfolder for archive edits and keep copies of configuration files before changing them. - Install only the required loader. Follow the loader’s own instructions and confirm that its release supports your recorded executable build.
- Install the target mod exactly as documented. Do not add optional files until the required files work.
- Launch Story Mode. Avoid using an unverified mod setup in GTA Online; compatibility testing belongs in the single-player environment described by the mod’s instructions.
- Test the actual function. A game that reaches the menu or loads Story Mode does not prove that the script, vehicle, UI or other feature is working.
- Add one change at a time. This creates a clear last-known-good point if the next installation fails.
There is no universal compatibility checker that can validate every GTA 5 mod, edition, executable build and dependency. Manual comparison and a controlled Story Mode test remain necessary.
What to do after a GTA 5 update
Recheck compatibility whenever the game updates. The update can change GTA5.exe while your mod files stay untouched, and dependent scripts may stop working until a new loader build is available.
- Repeat the Windows Properties > Details > File version check.
- Read the mod author’s latest compatibility note.
- Check the current release information for Script Hook V and ScriptHookVDotNet, if required.
- Look for explicit warnings that the new executable is unsupported.
- Do not replace a working loader with an unverified build-number recommendation from an old post.
If no dependency release supports the new executable yet, the accurate status is “waiting for an update,” not “the mod is permanently broken.” Keep the old, working setup available where possible and avoid overwriting it with files that cannot be rolled back.

The game crashes immediately
- Confirm the installed edition matches the mod and every loader.
- Check whether the game updated since the mod last worked.
- Compare the current
GTA5.exeFile version with the loader’s supported release information. - Disable the most recently installed change and test the base game.
- For archive edits, disable the OpenIV modification layer or ASI Loader as described in OpenIV’s instructions.
The game loads but the feature is absent
- Re-read the mod’s installation path and file-extension requirements.
- Verify that the exact script library is installed; Script Hook V and ScriptHookVDotNet are not interchangeable requirements.
- Check for a required activation key, in-game menu or Story Mode condition documented by the author.
- Remove optional files and test only the required package.
The loader reports an unsupported version
Do not bypass that warning by copying random DLLs from an older installation. Record the new executable version, check the maintainer’s current release information and wait for a compatible build if none exists. Installing a loader for a different build can create crashes or misleading symptoms.

A simultaneous failure after a game patch points first to the shared loader or executable mismatch rather than to every mod independently. Disable the latest change, verify the loader against the new File version, then retest one mod at a time.

Compare candidate mods or versions before choosing one
When two versions of a mod are available, compare the facts that determine whether either can run on your installation:
- Edition support: Legacy, Enhanced or both, stated explicitly.
- Executable range: The exact build or supported range, not merely an upload date.
- Loader/framework: Script Hook V, ScriptHookVDotNet or another named dependency, including its own support status.
- Maintenance: The author’s last update and whether the notes address recent game patches.
- Superseded requirements: Warnings that an older loader, gameconfig or framework is no longer supported.
- Rollback method: Whether the installation can be isolated in the
modsfolder and disabled cleanly.
A newer upload is not automatically better if it targets the other edition. Conversely, an older mod can remain usable when its stated executable and dependency support still match your installation.
Final pre-install checklist
- Have you identified Legacy versus Enhanced?
- Did you read
GTA5.exeFile version under Windows Properties > Details? - Did you avoid using the GTA Online version as a substitute?
- Does the mod explicitly support your edition and executable build?
- Did you list every required loader, framework and configuration file?
- Does each dependency support the same executable build?
- Did you check release notes after the latest game update?
