What port does a Terraria server use?
A standard, unmodified Terraria dedicated server listens on TCP port 7777. That is the value to try when a server has not been customized and its startup configuration does not specify another port.
The port is separate from the server’s address. Players need both the host’s IP address or hostname and the port on which the server is listening. On a home network, the host computer has a private local address; players on the internet use the home network’s public address. The router must pass incoming traffic from the chosen external port to the host’s local address.

A custom port changes only the listening endpoint. It does not change the world, player files or server address. Every connection setting that refers to the port must be updated to the new value.
How to find the port your running server uses
Start with the default only for an unmodified server
If you installed a dedicated server and never changed its configuration or launch parameters, begin with TCP 7777. Treat that as a starting point, not proof: a configuration file or a startup argument can override it.

Open the configuration file used to launch the dedicated server and look for a line in this form:
port=7777The number after port= is the configured listening port. If the line contains another number, use that number for the router rule, host firewall and client connection.
Check how the server was launched
A server started with a command-line port option can use a runtime value different from the file. The startup value is authoritative for that running instance. Also check whether the launch command loads a particular configuration file with the official configuration switch:

TerrariaServer.exe -config <serverconfigfile>Inspect the file named by -config, rather than assuming the server is reading a similarly named file in the installation directory. If both a file setting and a command-line port setting exist, verify the value reported by the startup process and use the value applied to the running instance.
Distinguish local and remote tests
A player on the same computer or local network can sometimes connect even when internet players cannot. That proves the server is reachable locally, but it does not confirm that the router forwarding rule or internet-facing firewall is correct. Test the port from the same network location your remote players will use.
How to change the Terraria server port
Changing the port is a controlled restart. Do not edit the configuration while relying on an already-running process and expect the process to change immediately.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly. Wait until the process has exited so the configuration is not being overwritten.
- Open the configuration file used by the launch command. If the server is started with
-config, use that exact file. - Set the port entry. Replace the existing value with your selected number, for example:
port=7778- Save the file. Keep the entry in plain
port=<number>form and avoid adding spaces or comments to the value. - Launch the server with the intended configuration. For example:
TerrariaServer.exe -config <serverconfigfile>- Confirm the active listener. Check the server’s startup information or the operating system’s listening-port view to ensure the process is using the selected number.
- Update the network path. Change the router forwarding entry and host firewall rule to the same number, then give players the new connection details.
If your server build supports a command-line option that sets the port, use the syntax documented for that build. A command-line value applies to that launch and can override what you expected from the configuration file, so record the effective value for future restarts.
Router port forwarding for players outside your network
When the host is behind a home router using NAT, internet players generally cannot reach the server until the router forwards the selected port to the host computer. The rule needs three pieces of information:

- External port: the number players will use from the internet.
- Internal destination: the host computer’s current local IP address.
- Protocol: use the protocol required by the server and your router’s interface; Terraria’s documented default is TCP.
Router interfaces use different labels, but the workflow is usually under Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server or a similar advanced-networking section. Create one rule for the selected port and direct it to the computer running the dedicated server. If the router offers separate internal and external fields, keeping them equal is the simplest arrangement.
Forwarding is normally unnecessary for players who are on the same local network, because they can use the host’s local address. The official Terraria setup guidance notes that non-NAT connections may not need forwarding, although the host firewall can still block access.
Keep the forwarding rule pointed at the right computer
A router can assign a different private address after a reboot, lease expiration or network change. If the forwarding rule still points to the old address, the server may work locally while all remote connections fail.
Give the server computer a stable local IP address, such as a static assignment configured for that network. Then select that address as the forwarding destination. After changing the computer’s network adapter, replacing the router or moving from Wi-Fi to wired networking, re-check both the assigned local address and the router rule.
- Verify the host’s current private address before editing the rule.
- Make sure the forwarding destination is the dedicated-server computer, not another gaming PC.
- After a router reset, confirm that the rule still exists and targets the same address.
Allow the port through the host firewall
Port forwarding only gets traffic to the host network. The operating-system firewall must also allow the server process or selected port to receive connections. Create or enable an inbound rule for the port the server actually uses, with the protocol appropriate to your installation.

If a firewall prompt appeared the first time the server launched, denying it can leave local or remote players blocked. Review the firewall’s allowed-app and inbound-rule lists, then restart the server after changing a rule. Avoid opening unrelated ports; the forwarding and firewall entries should be limited to the game server’s endpoint.
For a server on a cloud virtual machine, configure the provider’s network firewall, security group or equivalent control in addition to the operating-system firewall. Cloud documentation may call for TCP and UDP rules, so check the provider’s current guidance before deciding which protocol entries to create. Do not assume that opening a local firewall automatically opens the cloud network perimeter.

In Terraria, open Multiplayer and choose the option to join by IP. Enter the server address supplied by the host and the port currently configured for the running server.
A client that still uses 7777 while the server listens on a custom value will attempt the wrong endpoint and fail. The host should send players one complete set of details: public address (or a reachable hostname), selected port and any password required by the server. Local-network players may instead use the host computer’s private address.
If the host changes the port again, players must replace the saved or previously entered value. A successful local connection does not make the old internet address-and-port combination valid.
Port forwarding or a VPN virtual LAN?
Direct forwarding is the conventional route when you control the router. A VPN or virtual-LAN service can create a shared private network when router forwarding is unavailable, but it changes the requirements for every participant.

Choose the approach your network can support. A VPN does not remove the need to configure the Terraria server correctly; it changes which reachable address players use and may require software on every computer.
Troubleshoot by where the connection fails
Local players connect, remote players cannot
- Confirm the server’s active port from its configuration or startup parameters.
- Check that the router forwards that exact port to the host’s current local IP.
- Review the host operating-system firewall for an inbound rule covering the server.
- Verify that remote players are using the public address, not the host’s private LAN address.
No one can connect after changing the port
- Stop and restart the server after saving the configuration.
- Look for a typo in
port=<number>and confirm the launch command loads the intended file. - Check whether a command-line port option is overriding the file value.
- Change the router and firewall rules to the effective runtime value, not the previous default.
- Have every player enter the same current port.
The router rule disappears or stops working after a reboot
Check whether the server computer received a new private IP. Reassign a stable local address and update the forwarding destination. Also verify that a router firmware reset or replacement did not remove the rule.
The router cannot forward ports
Use a VPN or virtual-LAN arrangement such as Hamachi or Radmin VPN, provided every participant can install the software and join the same network. Players then connect using the reachable virtual-network address and the port exposed by the Terraria server there.
The server runs in the cloud
Open the selected endpoint in the provider’s security-group or network-firewall controls and in the server operating system. If the provider separates TCP and UDP settings, follow its current documentation rather than assuming one rule covers both.
A reliable pre-game checklist
- The server is running and its effective port is known.
- The configuration file used at launch contains the intended
port=<number>entry, unless a startup option deliberately overrides it. - The host computer has a stable local IP.
- The router forwards the selected port to that local IP when NAT is involved.
- The host firewall allows the server’s inbound traffic.
- Cloud hosts also allow the endpoint in their network controls.
- Players have the correct address and the same port value as the running server.
- VPN participants have installed the required client and joined the same virtual network, if that method is being used.
These checks separate the three most common layers of failure: the server listening on an unexpected value, the network sending traffic to the wrong machine, and a firewall refusing traffic that reached the host.
