A barcode, QR code, low price or convincing box on its own cannot establish authenticity.
What an authenticity check can—and cannot—prove
Counterfeiters can copy a box, reuse a genuine box with a different figure, or print a barcode that appears plausible. Authentication is therefore a process of reconciling independent details rather than finding one magic feature. The release format, character, series, item number, box artwork, stickers, production marks, figure sculpt and paint should all describe the same product.

Funko’s newer Octane5 packaging adds an official verification step for qualifying newer products. Older releases, special formats and products outside the rollout may not have that sticker. A missing Octane5 label is consequently a reason to identify the release carefully, not automatic proof that it is fake.
Use the checks below before paying. If one strong contradiction appears—such as a code resolving to a different figure, a seller refusing to show the underside, or a figure that does not match its box—pause the transaction and request evidence or a returnable purchase.

1. Identify the exact release before judging the listing
Start with Funko’s official product information for the character and format you are considering. “The same character” is not specific enough: a standard release, convention edition, retailer exclusive, flocked version, metallic finish and later reissue can have different item numbers, stickers and packaging.
Build a reference record
Record the details that identify the particular release:
- Character name and the series or franchise printed on the box.
- Box format and edition, such as a standard Pop!, a larger figure or a multipack.
- Item number shown on the box and in the official product information.
- Box artwork, color scheme, character pose and any edition or event sticker.
- Expected UPC/barcode, production markings and sticker wording or placement.
- Whether the official product page indicates the newer authentication packaging.
Take screenshots of the seller’s listing before messaging or paying. Listings can be edited, removed or replaced, and the original photos may be important if the item arrives with a different box or figure.

Ask for photographs that make comparison possible
Request new, well-lit photographs rather than relying only on stock images. Ask for the front, back, left side, right side, top and underside of the box, plus close-ups of every sticker, the barcode, the item number and any production marks. A dated note or a handwritten identifier in one photo helps show that the seller actually has the item pictured.
For a sealed Pop!, the box is the primary evidence. For an opened Pop!, request clear views of the head, face, paint boundaries, body, feet and all visible manufacturer or copyright marks. Blurry, cropped or heavily filtered images prevent meaningful comparison and should be treated as missing evidence.

2. Use the Octane5 sticker when the release has it
On September 24, 2024, Funko announced new sticker packaging using Octane5 technology. The sticker carries a QR code and an item code number. Funko describes the label as using micro-optic technology intended to resist duplication and says the buyer can verify the item through an Octane5 browser page.
Funko’s announcement states: “With our new sticker packaging, you can be sure that the items you purchase are 100% authentic Funko products.” That assurance applies to the new packaging system and qualifying products, not to every older Pop! ever made.

How to verify the sticker
- Locate the Octane5 label on the box and photograph it clearly. Check that the QR code and item code are both present and legible.
- Scan the QR code with your phone’s camera. Follow the resulting Octane5 verification page rather than typing a web address supplied in a seller message.
- Enter the unique item code from the sticker when the page requests it. Keep the code exactly as printed, including letters and numbers.
- Compare the result with the box in your hand or in the seller’s photographs: character, series, item identity and release details should agree.
- Save a screenshot of the result and the sticker. These records are useful if the listing, code or item changes later.
How to interpret a result
A successful verification that identifies the same release is strong evidence, but still inspect the physical item. A genuine sticker or genuine box can be transferred to a different figure. A failed, already-used, unreadable or mismatched code is a substantial warning; ask the seller for an explanation and independent proof before buying.
Do not reject an older Pop! solely because it lacks the new label. Funko’s system is a rollout tied to newer qualifying products, and current Funko product pages identify products carrying the new authentication packaging. Older or non-participating releases can legitimately use different stickers or no Octane5 sticker.
3. Inspect the box at high resolution
Use the seller’s original-resolution photos, or inspect the box under bright, even light. Counterfeit printing often reveals itself through several small inconsistencies rather than one dramatic defect.

Check the underside even when the front looks perfect. The bottom can contain the barcode, item number, production information and other marks that expose a mismatch. Compare every panel to the official reference, not just the front character image.

Print quality is a risk indicator, not a laboratory verdict. Genuine boxes can have minor manufacturing variation, and photographs can make a sharp print look soft. Look for a pattern of discrepancies and reconcile them with the other checks.
4. Reconcile every identifier
Write the identifiers in a small checklist and compare them one by one. The same release should be represented by the UPC/barcode, box item number, production markings, sticker wording and placement, and the character and series returned by any scan.

Barcodes are lookup tools, not certificates. A counterfeiter can copy a real number, and a seller can place a real box around the wrong figure. Conversely, an older genuine release may not match the conventions of newer packaging. Treat a scan as one piece of the identity check.
5. Inspect the figure when the seller has opened it
A sealed box limits what can be proven; an opened figure lets you compare the object itself. Use confirmed official photographs of the exact release, because a character may have several sculpts or paint versions.

Compare the sculpt and facial details
- Check the silhouette, head shape, hair or hat, clothing folds, accessories and pose.
- Compare eyes, mouth, eyebrows and other facial details at the same angle as the reference.
- Look for seams, excess plastic, warped parts or details that are absent from the official version.
Check paint and markings
- Inspect paint boundaries around the eyes, hair, clothing and accessories. Uneven overspray or colors unlike the reference are warning signs.
- Turn the figure over and examine the feet and underside for copyright or manufacturer marks.
- Compare the base, accessories and any translucent, metallic or flocked finish with the release description.
A genuine box can be paired with a swapped or counterfeit figure, so box-only checks have limits. If the seller will not show the figure, the purchase decision should rely on the box, seller protections and your tolerance for residual risk rather than an assumption that the contents are correct.
6. Evaluate the seller, price and transaction terms
Seller behavior often determines whether you can resolve an uncertainty. Ask for a dated photograph, a receipt or other provenance when available, and a clear return option. Keep all messages and photographs with the listing record.
- Unusually low price: treat it as a risk signal, not proof of a counterfeit. No universal counterfeit price cutoff is published in the cited official sources; genuine clearance, damage or a seller’s urgent sale can also lower a price.
- Stock photos only: request photographs of the actual item. Refusal to show the underside, stickers or figure should end the transaction.
- Pressure to pay: urgency, off-platform payment demands or a promise that verification can happen only after payment removes useful protection.
- Inconsistent story: a claimed exclusive, release date, sticker or item number that does not fit the official reference needs an explanation before you proceed.
- No return path: a no-returns sale leaves you carrying the cost of an uncertain item. Prefer a transaction with documented buyer protection where possible.
Price should be compared with current market context for the exact release, condition and packaging, not with a generic “normal Pop!” price. A rare, damaged, signed or convention release can differ greatly from a common standard release.

For older releases, give more weight to independent checks—official reference matching, box quality, identifier reconciliation, figure details and seller protections—because the newest Octane5 sticker may not apply.

8. What to do when a check fails
The Pop! has no Octane5 sticker
Confirm the release date and product format. If Funko’s product information does not indicate the new packaging, continue with the box, identifier, figure and seller checks. If the product is a newer qualifying release that should carry the label, ask for an explanation and additional proof before buying.
The QR code does not scan
Request a sharp, straight-on photograph and try the physical sticker if you have the item. Check for glare, damage or an incomplete code. Do not substitute a random lookup site or accept a seller-created screenshot as equivalent to entering the unique code on the Octane5 page.
The code identifies another release
Stop and ask the seller to explain the discrepancy. A code resolving to a different character, series or format is a strong reason not to buy unless the seller can document a legitimate packaging error and offer a protected return.
The box looks genuine but the figure does not
Treat it as a possible swap or counterfeit figure. Ask for provenance, compare every sculpt and marking, and use the return process rather than relying on the box’s appearance.
The seller refuses more photographs
Do not let a low price substitute for evidence. Walk away, or choose a listing that lets you verify the item and return it if the delivered Pop! differs from the description.
9. Protect an authentic Pop! after purchase
Authentication and preservation are separate jobs. A UV premium plastic Pop! protector can reduce dust, ultraviolet-light exposure and handling damage, but it does not authenticate the figure or correct a swapped item. Check the protector’s dimensions against the specific box format before ordering; larger figures, multipacks and unusual packaging may not fit a standard protector.
Keep the original listing screenshots, seller messages, receipt, verification result and your own arrival photographs. Photograph the shipping carton, all box panels and the figure before removing protective packaging. Those records preserve the condition and the evidence you relied on if a dispute or return becomes necessary.
Final pre-payment checklist
- Have you matched the character, series, format and item number to official Funko information?
- Do the seller’s photographs show every box panel, including the underside?
- Does the applicable Octane5 sticker scan and identify the same release?
- Do the UPC/barcode, box number, stickers and production marks agree?
- Are printing, logos, colors, borders and copyright lines sharp and correctly registered?
- If opened, does the figure’s sculpt, paint, feet and manufacturer marks match confirmed photos?
- Has the seller provided dated evidence, a plausible provenance and a return option?
- Is the price explainable for this exact release rather than merely cheap?
If several answers are no—or any identifier contradicts the claimed release—the rational choice is to stop. Authenticity is strongest when independent evidence converges; no single barcode, QR code, sticker or visual cue is a universal guarantee.
