How to Check Whether a Chinese Stock Is Available Through Your Broker

To find out whether you can buy a Chinese stock, first identify the exact security and listing venue, then search that ticker on your broker, verify the exchange’s eligibility rules, and confirm that your account has the required market permissions. A U.S.-traded ADR, a Hong Kong-listed share and a Mainland A share are different instruments. A ticker appearing in a search does not by itself prove that your broker will accept an order.

What “available through my broker” actually means

Availability has three separate tests. The company must have a security you can identify precisely; that security must be tradable through the relevant exchange or access link; and your broker must participate in that market and have enabled your account.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Instrument: Determine whether you are looking for a U.S.-traded American depositary receipt (ADR), a Hong Kong-listed share or a Mainland China A share.
  • Exchange eligibility: For Mainland shares, check whether the security is on the current Northbound Stock Connect eligible-securities list maintained by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX).
  • Broker access: Verify that your broker supports the venue or Stock Connect link and that your account has the required permissions, agreements, identification registration and currency support.

These tests are independent. A company can be listed on an eligible exchange while your broker does not support that exchange. Conversely, a broker may display a quote but block trading because your account is not approved for the market or because the security is not eligible through that route.

The three common forms of a Chinese stock

Instrument form Primary venue Access route Key check
U.S.-traded ADR A U.S. exchange Your broker’s ordinary U.S. equity service Search the ADR symbol and confirm U.S. trading is enabled
Hong Kong-listed share Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) Your broker’s Hong Kong market service Search the HKEX ticker and confirm Hong Kong-market permission
Mainland A share Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) or Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) Northbound Shanghai-Hong Kong or Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect Confirm the security is on the current Northbound list and that your broker participates

An ADR and a Hong Kong or Mainland share can represent the same company while having different symbols, currencies, trading hours, settlement arrangements, corporate actions and fees. Always identify the instrument before deciding that a search result is the security you want.

Step 1: Identify the exact ticker, exchange and share class

Start with the company’s official name, exact ticker and listing venue. Do not rely on a shortened company name or a search result that omits the exchange.

  1. Write down the legal company name. Chinese companies can have similar English names, and a broker may display several securities for one issuer.
  2. Record the ticker exactly as used by the venue. Symbols can differ between a U.S. ADR, an HKEX listing and a Mainland listing. Include any exchange suffix or market selector shown by your broker.
  3. Confirm the security type. Look for labels such as ADR, ordinary share, A share, ETF or another depositary or fund instrument. An ETF is not interchangeable with an individual company share.
  4. Check the trading currency and venue. A Hong Kong listing is generally handled through the Hong Kong market service, while a Mainland A share reached through Stock Connect involves RMB-denominated trading rules.
  5. Save the instrument’s identifier. Keep the broker’s security-detail page or exchange identifier so customer support can distinguish the exact product you selected.

If you cannot establish all three elements—company, ticker and venue—stop before placing an order. Asking a broker to “enable the Chinese stock” without those details can lead to the wrong market or share class being enabled.

Step 2: Search your broker using the exact instrument

Use the broker’s security search and then open the complete detail page and order ticket. Menu names vary, but the workflow is usually the broker’s Trade or Order area, followed by a market or exchange selector and the ticker search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the account that would hold the position.
  2. Open the equity or stock-trading screen, not a watchlist-only search.
  3. Enter the exact ticker and select the exchange or market shown for that result.
  4. Open the security-detail page and verify the company name, security type, currency and venue.
  5. Open the buy ticket without submitting it. Check whether quantity, order type and market fields are active.
  6. Read any permission, eligibility or trading-hours message before proceeding.

A missing quote, a result that shows only research data, or a disabled Buy button can have several explanations:

  • The broker does not support that exchange or market.
  • The account lacks permission for the venue, security type or country.
  • The security is not eligible for the broker’s China Connect service.
  • The broker requires a separate agreement, account or client-identification registration.
  • The search used the ADR symbol when the broker supports only the Hong Kong or Mainland listing, or vice versa.

Do not treat a visible quote as proof that an order will be accepted. The order ticket is the practical test of whether your account and the instrument are connected to the same trading route.

What a broker’s own documentation can reveal

Broker interfaces differ by jurisdiction and account type. DBS, for example, states that its online banking interface displays only HKEX-listed stocks and directs customers to customer service for Stock Connect orders. That means an absent Mainland quote in its ordinary online-banking search is not evidence that the company has no Mainland listing; it may indicate that Stock Connect orders use a separate channel.

Step 3: Check the official Northbound eligibility list

If you want a Mainland A share, use HKEX’s current Northbound eligible-securities list. HKEX describes Stock Connect as a route through Hong Kong that gives international investors access to selected Mainland China opportunities. The list, rather than a general finance website or a broker’s search index, is the authoritative exchange-level check for Northbound candidates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to check an A share

  1. Open the current HKEX Northbound eligible-securities list.
  2. Choose the relevant link: Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect for SSE securities or Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect for SZSE securities.
  3. Search by the security’s Mainland ticker or company name and confirm the listing venue.
  4. Check the list’s effective date or update notice. Eligibility lists can change.
  5. Record whether the entry is an individual A share or an eligible ETF, since the rules and instrument type differ.

HKEX rules for SSE securities include qualifying index constituents and companies with both A-share and H-share listings. They exclude securities placed under risk alert and securities that are not denominated in RMB. Inclusion criteria for the Shenzhen link and any later rule changes must be checked in the current HKEX materials rather than inferred from the Shanghai criteria.

Being on the list proves only that the exchange link can recognize the security under its rules. It does not prove that your particular broker offers the link, that your account is eligible, or that an order will pass all pre-trade and settlement checks.

Step 4: Confirm that your broker participates and your account is enabled

Ask the broker specifically about the relevant Stock Connect link or Hong Kong market, not merely whether it “supports Chinese stocks.” HKEX’s investor FAQ advises: “Investors should discuss with their brokers on the detailed arrangements of participating in Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect, including whether they need to open a separate account for trading SSE Securities, in addition to the one for trading Hong Kong shares.”

Questions to ask the broker

  • Does the firm participate in Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect, or both?
  • Is the exact security currently supported for this account type and country of residence?
  • Do I need a separate China Connect account, sub-account or agreement in addition to a Hong Kong-share account?
  • Has my client-identification information been registered for the service?
  • Which currency must be held for purchases, and does the broker perform currency conversion automatically or require an RMB balance?
  • Are there board-specific investor restrictions that apply to this security or to my account?
  • Which order types, lot sizes and trading sessions are accepted?
  • How are settlement, dividends, rights issues, suspensions and other corporate actions handled?

Availability is jurisdiction-, account- and broker-specific. There is no universal list that guarantees access for every investor. Get the answer for the account you will actually use and ask the representative to identify the exact rejection reason if the order ticket is disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Check trading and settlement constraints before ordering

Stock Connect eligibility does not remove market-specific operating rules. Standard Chartered and Hang Seng describe restrictions that can affect whether an otherwise valid-looking order is accepted.

Constraint How it can affect an order What to verify
RMB denomination The security and settlement process may require RMB rather than your account’s base currency. Supported currency, conversion method and the balance required before submission
Board-specific investor limits Some boards have additional eligibility requirements or limits on who may trade. Whether your account meets the board’s investor criteria
Limit-only orders A market-order button may be unavailable; the ticket may accept only a specified limit price. Permitted order types for that link and session
Board lots Orders may need to use the venue’s prescribed trading unit rather than any arbitrary share count. Required lot size and whether odd-lot trading is supported
Pre-trade checking A sell order can be rejected if the system cannot verify that the required holding is available before trading. Cut-off times, settlement status and the broker’s holding-availability rules
Settlement timing Cash and securities may become available on a schedule different from the one you use for domestic shares. The link’s settlement cycle and when funds or shares can be reused
No same-day day trading You may not be able to buy and sell the same Stock Connect position on the same day. Whether the rule applies to your intended transaction and holding period

Read the broker’s order preview for warnings about currency, lot size, price limits, trading session, fees and taxes. Current fee and tax figures are broker- and jurisdiction-specific, so obtain them from the broker rather than applying a generic online schedule.

Comparing routes when more than one listing exists

A company may offer an ADR, a Hong Kong share and a Mainland A share, but those routes are not interchangeable. Use the route that your account can legally and operationally support, then compare the practical consequences before choosing the instrument.

Decision factor U.S. ADR Hong Kong share Mainland A share through Stock Connect
Listing venue U.S. exchange HKEX SSE or SZSE reached through the relevant Northbound link
Broker participation U.S. equity access Hong Kong-market access Participation in Shanghai-Hong Kong or Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect
Investor and account setup Usually the broker’s standard U.S.-equity permission, subject to its own rules Hong Kong-market permission; some brokers handle it separately from other markets Possible separate account or agreement, client-identification registration and link-specific eligibility
Currency and order rules Follow the U.S. listing’s currency and order ticket Follow HKEX and broker rules for the Hong Kong listing RMB denomination, link-specific order restrictions, board lots and settlement checks may apply
Eligibility source The broker’s support for the U.S. listing The broker’s support for the HKEX listing HKEX’s current Northbound eligible-securities list plus broker participation

Fees, taxes, liquidity, settlement details and corporate-action treatment can differ among the three routes. Ask your broker for the current schedule and handling policy for the exact instrument, because those figures are not universal.

Why a ticker is missing or an order is rejected

The company appears, but the wrong security is shown

Likely cause: The search matched an ADR, ETF or another share class instead of the listing you intended.

Fix: Recheck the venue and security type on the detail page. Search again with the exchange selector and compare the displayed currency and identifier with the listing you want.

No quote or instrument page appears

Likely cause: The broker does not provide data or trading for that venue, or the market is hidden until you request permission.

Fix: Ask support whether the firm supports the specific exchange and account jurisdiction. Do not assume that support for U.S. ADRs includes Hong Kong or Mainland shares.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quote appears, but the buy button is disabled

Likely cause: Your account lacks market permission, a separate agreement or identification registration, or the security is unavailable through the broker’s China Connect service.

Fix: Request the exact permission or account setup and ask whether the displayed quote is informational only.

The order fails after you enter quantity and price

Likely cause: The order violates a currency, lot-size, order-type, board, pre-trade or settlement rule.

Fix: Read the rejection text, then correct one variable at a time: use the permitted order type, enter a valid board lot, fund the required currency and wait until holdings or cash meet the settlement condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The security was eligible previously but no longer is

Likely cause: HKEX changed the Northbound eligible list or the security entered a risk-alert or other exclusion category.

Fix: Recheck the current list and effective date immediately before trading. Save the list entry and the broker’s rejection message if you need an explanation.

Understand the Northbound quota without treating it as a guarantee

The Shanghai Stock Exchange reported a Northbound daily quota of RMB52 billion for each Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Connect link in 2018. That is a system-level quota figure from that report, not a promise that an individual order will be filled or that the same limit still applies today. Confirm the current quota status and any operational notices with HKEX or your broker before relying on it.

A final pre-trade checklist

  1. Write down the company name, exact ticker, exchange and security type.
  2. Confirm whether you are using an ADR, an HKEX share or a Mainland A share.
  3. Search the broker with the exact ticker and exchange selector.
  4. Open the security page and order ticket; verify that the currency, venue and buy controls match your intended instrument.
  5. For an A share, locate the security on HKEX’s current Northbound eligible-securities list and check the effective date.
  6. Confirm that your broker participates in the relevant Stock Connect link and that your account is enabled.
  7. Ask whether a separate account, agreement or client-identification registration is required.
  8. Check RMB funding, board eligibility, order type, board lot, pre-trade checking, settlement timing and the no-same-day-trading rule.
  9. Review current fees, taxes, liquidity information and corporate-action procedures for the exact route.
  10. Recheck eligibility and broker support immediately before submitting the order, and keep any rejection message for follow-up.

If any item remains unresolved, the correct next step is to ask the broker for a route-specific answer rather than assuming that a similarly named ticker is tradable.
