To check a new Magic: The Gathering card, identify its exact printing and three-letter set code, consult Wizards of the Coast’s live page for the format, then read that set’s official Release Notes under General Notes → Card Legality. The format page gives the current permitted-set list; the Release Notes explain exceptions for Commander products, Jumpstart, Special Guests, reprints and supplemental sets. Before a sanctioned event, check the current banned or restricted list and the event’s timing policy.
A card being previewed, opened at a prerelease or sold in a product is not, by itself, a universal legality ruling. The same card name can have different set codes, and products released between premier sets can enter only selected formats.

The reliable legality check
Use this sequence whenever you are unsure about a card. It works for paper cards and avoids the common mistake of treating a product’s release as permission to play every card in every format.

Write down the card name, set name, three-letter set code and, when a product has mixed treatments, the collector number. A reprint may have the same name as an older card but a different set code and a separate entry in the Release Notes. Do not rely on the artwork, frame or card name alone.

2. Open the live format page
Use Wizards’ current page for Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Commander, Legacy or Vintage. Standard, Pioneer and Modern pages provide permitted-set lists. Commander, Legacy and Vintage describe broad historical pools and point you to their current ban or restriction information. Treat this page as the up-to-date set-level checklist because it can change after rules or ban announcements.
3. Read the set’s Release Notes
Find General Notes → Card Legality. This section states whether the main expansion, Commander cards, Jumpstart cards, Special Guests and reprints follow the surrounding product’s default legality or a different rule. It often names collector-number ranges or says that a returning card follows the legality of a card with the same name.
4. Check the date and event policy
Compare the set’s release and prerelease information with the date of your event. A preview, preorder or prerelease opening is not a blanket answer for constructed play. A prerelease organizer can publish a limited-event policy that differs from the date on which the set becomes legal in a constructed format. If the event listing does not say, ask the organizer before registering.
5. Check bans and restrictions
A set can be permitted while an individual card in that set is banned or restricted. Check the current list for the specific format immediately before sanctioned play. In Vintage, a restricted card is limited to one copy in the main deck or sideboard; that is different from a ban.
6. Save the date of the ruling
Format pages are live documents. Release Notes remain useful historical explanations, but later announcements can change a card’s status. For a deck check or judge question, save the page date, set code and collector number you used so another player can reproduce the decision.

How each format admits new cards
| Format | How new cards enter | Rotation | Extra checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | New sets are added to the live Standard pool. | Once each year, after the first premier-set Prerelease, the six oldest Standard sets rotate out. | Current permitted-set list, individual bans, event date and deck construction rules. |
| Pioneer | Only sets on the Pioneer permitted-set list enter. A normal Standard release does not automatically add every card. | Nonrotating; Wizards describes the pool as Return to Ravnica forward, subject to the current list and bans. | Confirm that the product is listed and review the Pioneer banned list. |
| Modern | Cards enter when their set is on the Modern list. Products designed directly for Modern can enter without first being Standard-legal. | Nonrotating. | Read direct-to-Modern Release Notes, then check the Modern banned list. |
| Commander | Cards can come from Magic’s history, but Commander products and the Commander ban list create product-specific exceptions. | Nonrotating. | Verify the card’s Commander treatment, color identity and current ban list. A Commander deck has 99 cards plus one commander. |
| Legacy | Broad historical pool; new supplemental or Commander cards may be added explicitly in Release Notes. | Nonrotating. | Check the Legacy banned list and any product-specific legality statement. |
| Vintage | Broadest pool, including expansions and special sets, subject to bans and restrictions. | Nonrotating. | Check both the banned list and the restricted list; restricted cards are limited to one copy in the main deck or sideboard. |
Standard
Standard is the format in which set release and rotation matter most. Wizards states, “Each year, new Magic sets are released and added to Standard.” The current Standard page, accessed October 18, 2026, says that the six oldest Standard sets rotate once per year after the first premier-set Prerelease. Therefore, check both sides of the change: a new set may be entering while six older sets leave.
The Standard page also specifies a 60-card minimum main deck and an optional sideboard of up to 15 cards. Those construction rules do not determine whether a particular card is legal, but they matter when you test a newly released deck at a sanctioned event.

Pioneer
Pioneer does not rotate when a new Standard set arrives. Wizards describes it as a nonrotating format beginning with Return to Ravnica, with legality still controlled by the current permitted-set and banned lists. A premier set that is legal in Standard is not automatically legal in Pioneer, and a supplemental product can be excluded even if its cards are new.
Modern
Modern is also nonrotating. Wizards’ format description says, “Format doesn’t rotate.” The key question is whether the product is on the Modern list or was expressly designed to enter Modern, as with Modern Horizons products. Read the product’s Release Notes because Commander cards, reprints and Special Guests in a Modern-focused release may not share the main set’s default treatment.
Commander
Commander does not rotate; Wizards says, “Cards don’t rotate.” Its pool reaches across Magic’s history, but a card’s inclusion in a Commander product can have a different legality statement from cards in the accompanying main set. Check the Commander ban list as well as the card’s color identity and deck-building restrictions. The format uses 99 cards plus one commander, and a player loses after taking 21 combat damage from one commander.

Legacy
Legacy is a nonrotating historical format. New cards do not need to have been Standard-legal, but the product must be permitted and the card must not be banned. Release Notes are especially important for Commander and supplemental products because they may explicitly add those cards to Legacy even when the surrounding product is not a premier expansion.

Vintage has the broadest card pool, including expansions and special sets, but it is still governed by two different restrictions: a card may be banned, or it may be restricted to one copy in the main deck or sideboard. Check the current list after confirming the product’s general legality.
Why the set code and product type change the answer
Ordinary premier-set cards
For the main Reality Fracture expansion, cards with the FRA code are stated in its Release Notes to be legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern and Commander. The same notes direct players to the Formats hub for the complete, current list. That is the normal pattern for a premier set, but you still verify the live page and bans.
Commander cards in a set release
Reality Fracture’s new Commander cards use the FRC code and are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. They are not automatically legal in Standard, Pioneer or Modern merely because they were packaged with a premier set. Previously printed FRC cards follow the legality of a card with the same name. Use the collector-number entry when the product contains both new and returning cards.
Foundations and Jumpstart
Foundations cards marked FDN entered Standard, Pioneer, Modern and Commander. The Jumpstart product using the J25 code has a split treatment: new cards numbered 1–56 entered Commander, Legacy and Vintage, while returning J25 cards follow the legality of a card with the same name. A J25 card therefore cannot be classified correctly from the set code alone; check whether its collector number identifies a new card or a returning reprint.

Supplemental sets that skip Standard and Pioneer
Assassin’s Creed uses the ACR code. Its cards entered Modern, Commander, Legacy and Vintage, and the Release Notes explicitly state: “Cards printed in this set do not become legal for play in Standard or Pioneer.” This is why “the product is new” is not a sufficient answer for a Standard or Pioneer deck.
Direct-to-Modern products
Modern Horizons 3 entered Modern, Commander, Legacy and Vintage, but not Standard or Pioneer. Its Release Notes separately address reprints, Commander cards and Special Guests. When a product is designed for a nonrotating format, start with that product’s Card Legality section rather than assuming the rules for a normal premier set.
Special Guests and reprints
Special Guests and reprints often inherit the legality of the same card name instead of the surrounding set’s default legality. Confirm the exact set-code and collector-number entry. Two physically identical copies with different printings can be legal for different reasons, while a newly printed card in a supplemental product may be legal only in the formats listed for that product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prerelease, release and sanctioned-play timing
“Released” does not have one universal meaning. A prerelease is an event with its own published policy, usually built around the new product; a constructed tournament uses the format’s legality date and current lists. Check the event announcement for the exact point at which cards may be registered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- At a prerelease: use the organizer’s limited-event rules. Do not infer constructed legality from the fact that you opened the card.
- At a local constructed event: confirm the store’s event date, the format page and any announced policy for the new set.
- At a sanctioned tournament: use the tournament’s published rules and ask the head judge about an ambiguous printing before decklists are submitted.
- For online or digital events: verify the platform’s format announcement separately; a digital card pool can have a different release schedule from paper.
Worked examples
Example: a new FRA card in Standard
- Record the card’s name and the FRA set code.
- Open the current Standard permitted-set list and confirm Reality Fracture is present.
- Read Reality Fracture’s Card Legality notes to ensure the card is a main-set FRA card rather than an FRC Commander card, Special Guest or reprint.
- Check the Standard banned list and the date of the event, including whether it falls before or after the annual rotation.
Example: an FRC Commander card for Legacy
Do not copy the Standard legality of the surrounding Reality Fracture release. The FRC Commander treatment is listed for Commander, Legacy and Vintage. Confirm the exact collector number, then check the Legacy banned list.
Best Value
Example: a J25 reprint
First determine whether the J25 collector number is one of the new cards numbered 1–56. If it is a returning card, apply the same-name legality stated in the Release Notes rather than the new-card treatment for that product.
Example: an ACR card in Pioneer
The product’s release date does not make the card Pioneer-legal. Assassin’s Creed’s notes expressly exclude Standard and Pioneer, so the card cannot be registered in Pioneer unless a later official policy changes that status.
Common mistakes and how to resolve them
“It is in the newest set, so it is legal everywhere”
Premier sets, Commander releases, Jumpstart, Special Guests and direct-to-Modern products have different entry rules. Start with the set code and product section, not the marketing release date.
Recommended Free Tools
“The card name appears in the format database”
A database entry may combine several printings. Match the physical card’s set code and collector number to the official Release Notes, then verify the live format page.
“A reprint resets legality”
A reprint can have its own treatment, but many notes say returning cards follow the legality of the same name. Read the product’s exact wording instead of assuming either automatic legality or automatic exclusion.
“A card is legal because it was playable at prerelease”
Prerelease play is governed by the event policy. Constructed legality and limited-event permission are related but not identical questions; check the event announcement and format date.
“The set is legal, so every card in it is legal”
Individual bans and Vintage restrictions override a set-level permission. Check the current list immediately before submitting a deck.
A printable decision checklist
- What is the card’s exact name, set code and collector number?
- Is it a main-set card, Commander card, Jumpstart card, Special Guest or reprint?
- Does the live format page list the set or product?
- What does General Notes → Card Legality say for that exact treatment?
- Is the card banned or restricted in this format?
- Is the event before, during or after the relevant release, prerelease or rotation date?
- Have you saved the current page date for a ruling that may be disputed later?
When those seven answers agree, you have a defensible legality check. If they conflict, use the most specific official statement—the exact collector-number entry in the Release Notes—then ask the event judge or organizer before playing the card.
