To open Windows TPM Management, press Windows+R, type tpm.msc, and press Enter. The console lets you inspect TPM status and handle specific management or troubleshooting tasks. For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, checking it is all that is needed: Windows ordinarily initializes and takes ownership of the TPM automatically.
Open TPM Management with tpm.msc
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
tpm.msc. - Press Enter or select OK.
- Review the TPM status shown in the management console.
Opening the console only displays information; it does not clear or reset the TPM. Microsoft documents the console for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but recommends avoiding routine TPM configuration through it. The operating system normally initializes and takes ownership automatically. Microsoft’s TPM technology overview also notes that active development of the management console ended beginning with Windows 10 version 1809 and Windows Server 2019.

Check TPM status in PowerShell instead
If you only need a status report, run Get-Tpm in PowerShell. The command returns properties including whether a TPM is present, ready, enabled, or in a lockout state. This is a status check, not a command to clear TPM keys.
What to do if tpm.msc cannot find or load a TPM
A message that a compatible TPM cannot be found does not by itself establish that the computer needs a separate TPM module. TPM availability and firmware configuration vary by device, and the console message alone cannot identify the cause.

- For a work or school computer, contact the organization’s IT administrator before changing TPM settings.
Understand the risks before clearing the TPM
Clearing is a separate, destructive troubleshooting action—not a routine way to open or inspect TPM Management. Microsoft warns that clearing removes keys associated with the TPM, which can make data protected by those keys inaccessible, including data associated with a virtual smart card or sign-in PIN. Confirm that important data is backed up and that you have the needed recovery methods before proceeding.
Microsoft advises clearing through Windows functionality such as TPM Management, not directly through UEFI. A restart and physical confirmation may be required. On a work or school device, get direction from the IT administrator before attempting a clear. See Microsoft’s TPM troubleshooting and clearing guidance.
