For routine care, focus on the removable ice bucket: discard unused ice every two weeks, and rinse and dry the bucket completely if it needs clearing. Do not wash or manually defrost the ice-making mechanism. Samsung says the ice maker defrosts automatically and warns that manual defrosting can damage it; consult the manual for your exact refrigerator before removing anything beyond the bucket.
What you can safely clean
Start with the removable ice bucket
Samsung recommends emptying unused ice every other week to help prevent clumping and stale taste. If ice has built up in the removable bucket, take it out according to your model’s instructions, rinse it, and let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Seat it fully in its proper position. Keep the bucket for ice only.

Ice makers may sit in the freezer or refrigerator compartment, and bucket removal differs by model. Check your refrigerator’s manual before removing components beyond the bucket or applying any cleaner to internal parts. Samsung does not provide one universal procedure for washing the internal ice-making mechanism.

Do not manually defrost the ice maker
Samsung’s instruction is direct: “Do not defrost your ice maker.” The unit has an automatic defrost function, and attempting to thaw it yourself may cause damage. Do not pour cleaner into the mechanism or use a hair dryer to speed thawing. If automatic defrost appears not to be working, request service.

How often to maintain the bucket and water filter

These are Samsung maintenance intervals, not guarantees that every symptom will be fixed by following them. For the filter, check the cartridge installed in your refrigerator and its manual before buying a replacement. Samsung lists HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 among its filter models, but compatibility depends on the refrigerator. Samsung warns that third-party filters may cause leaks or damage.
Diagnose the ice before you clean or replace anything
Cloudy white cubes
Cloudiness can be normal. Samsung says rapid freezing may trap minerals and gases, including oxygen and nitrogen, in the ice. Cloudy cubes alone do not establish that the ice maker is dirty.

Dark flecks or particles
Dark particles are not normal. Samsung identifies a dirty water supply, an expired or damaged filter, or a damaged bucket as possible causes. If the supply water appears dirty, Samsung suggests flushing several gallons; inspect the filter and bucket for age or damage, and replace the filter if needed. If particles persist or you see damage, contact Samsung support or qualified service rather than trying to clean the internal mechanism.

Small or shattered cubes
Low water pressure can produce small or shattered ice, according to Samsung. Its troubleshooting page states a minimum refrigerator pressure of 20 psi and describes a dispenser check: dispense water for 10 seconds and confirm at least 3/4 cup. These are Samsung’s figures for the circumstances covered by that guide; check your model’s instructions, since requirements can vary.

Clumped ice
Ice left unused can clump. Empty the bucket and allow the ice maker to produce fresh ice; make a habit of discarding unused ice every two weeks.
Frost or slushy ice
Look for warm air entering around the refrigerator door, the ice bucket, or the dispenser. Check that the door closes, the bucket is aligned and seated, its seal is intact, and the dispenser flap closes without a gap. Follow Samsung’s model-specific guidance to clear frost; do not use a hair dryer. If frost returns after you clear it, request service.

Bad taste or odor
For a new refrigerator, Samsung recommends dispensing 2 to 3 gallons of water and discarding the first batch of ice. If an older refrigerator develops a new taste or odor, replace the water filter and dispense approximately 2 to 3 gallons afterward. These are Samsung recommendations, not universal guarantees that flushing resolves every water-quality issue.
When to request service
- Frost returns after you clear it, or the automatic defrost function appears to have failed.
- Dark particles continue after checking the water supply and filter, or the bucket is visibly damaged.
- The bucket will not align or seal correctly, or the dispenser flap leaves a gap that you cannot resolve using the manual.
- The ice maker still does not work after the model-specific troubleshooting steps.
Use Samsung support or a qualified refrigerator technician for persistent problems. Do not open, thaw, or wash the internal ice maker as a substitute for service.
