Check Steam’s server status before changing your computer or router. If Steam’s status page shows a service problem—or Steam’s own sites are timing out—wait and check again later. If there is no broader issue, narrow the cause by testing another game server, your network connection, firewall permissions, and any network restrictions.
Check whether Steam is experiencing a broader problem
Open the Steam Server Status page, linked from Steam Support. It is a moment-in-time check: a status result does not establish whether Steam is having an outage later. If the page reports a service issue, or Steam sites are timing out, wait and check again before changing local settings. Steam also directs users who see “The Steam Servers are currently unavailable” or “The Steam Servers are too busy” to check network status. Steam’s troubleshooting article for these errors lists additional steps if the problem continues.

Work out whether the failure affects one game server or Steam broadly
“Error: Server Verification Failed”
Try connecting to several game servers. If another server works, the server that returned the error is the more likely source of the problem. If none work, check Steam’s status, confirm the client is not set to Offline, and see whether Steam Friends reports a lost connection. These checks help distinguish a single-server issue from a broader Steam or client connection failure. Steam’s Server Verification Failed guidance covers this error.
“SECURE CONNECTION FAILED”
Use the same scope check: try other servers, then check Steam status and the client’s connection to the Friends network if the problem affects all servers. Steam lists this secure-server error alongside its other network troubleshooting questions. See Steam’s server-connection guidance.

Test the local network path
Restart the modem and router
Restart your modem and router, then reopen Steam and test the connection. If the modem and router are separate, Steam recommends closing Steam, connecting the computer directly to the modem to bypass the router, confirming that internet access works, and then restarting Steam to test again. If the direct connection works but the router connection does not, investigate router configuration or compatibility rather than assuming Steam is down. Follow Steam’s router troubleshooting directions.
Compare Wi-Fi or powerline with Ethernet
Where your device supports it, test with a direct wired connection. Steam Support says, “If possible, test Steam with a direct wired connection to determine if this is a problem.” Wi-Fi and powerline connections can fail intermittently because of interference, so a wired test can help isolate the connection path. It is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. Steam’s router guide and Steam’s network and download guidance describe these checks.

Steam Deck Wi-Fi and wired tests
On Steam Deck, try another available Wi-Fi band—6 GHz, 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz—and check whether router channel congestion could be affecting the connection. A USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter may be needed to test a wired connection; verify that any adapter is compatible with your device. If download speeds became poor after changing custom DNS settings, Steam suggests reverting those changes as a troubleshooting test. Steam’s Steam Deck and network guidance has further details.

Review firewall permissions and interfering software
A first Steam installation or a recent client update can leave firewall rules blocking network access, even if Steam worked before. Steam’s firewall guidance recommends refreshing the permissions for Steam executables so the firewall can prompt for current rules, then restarting Steam. Use the steps for your operating system in Steam’s firewall troubleshooting article.

- Integrated Ethernet port supports 10M/100M/1000M bandwidth; offers instant Internet connection to the host
- USB-C input allows for reversible plugging; offers complete compatibility with current computers and devices; compatible with Nintendo Switch

If you temporarily disable a firewall to test whether it is causing the problem, turn it back on immediately afterward. Steam does not recommend leaving it disabled; correct the permissions instead. If the issue persists, review potentially interfering software, background applications, and malware or spyware using Steam’s current guidance and the instructions from your security software provider. Do not remove security software indiscriminately. Steam’s firewall article and Steam’s network error guidance discuss software-related causes.
Account for required ports and managed networks
Steam publishes separate TCP and UDP port requirements for login, downloads, gameplay, Remote Play, dedicated servers, and Steamworks peer-to-peer and voice features. Schools, universities, workplaces, proxies, and other managed networks may block ports Steam needs. Consult Steam’s port requirements for the relevant service. If you are on a managed network, ask its administrator whether Steam traffic is allowed; Steam says these ports cannot simply be remapped to HTTP or an arbitrary custom range.

Fix “The Steam Servers are too busy” and related messages
Try a different Download Region that is still relatively close to you. If the error remains, Steam’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies interfering programs, corrupted Steam files, firewall, antivirus, router, or internet problems as possible causes, as well as a Steam network issue. File-repair instructions differ between Windows and macOS, and deleting or replacing local files can affect mods or custom content, so follow Steam’s current directions for your system rather than deleting files based on a general tip. Read Steam’s current instructions for unavailable or busy servers.
Read download speeds in context
A low Steam download rate does not by itself prove that your internet connection is slow. Downloading and installing can use substantial CPU and disk resources, and Steam may throttle downloads to match the system’s installation work. Storage write speed—including an SD card’s speed—can also affect how quickly an installation finishes. If the issue is slow downloads rather than failed logins or game-server connections, use Steam’s download and hardware guidance and distinguish download transfer from installation progress.

Escalate based on when and where Steam fails
If Steam works on another network but not your usual one, the router, ISP, proxy, or network policy is a more likely place to investigate than a universal Steam outage. If problems happen only at certain hours, Steam says ISP blocking or traffic shaping is possible; test at other times and contact your ISP if the pattern persists. For a school or workplace connection, involve the network administrator. Steam’s general network troubleshooting guidance covers ISP and router-related issues.
