Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Start by identifying the exact alert and the active hub: in the Home app, open More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges. Then follow the steps for that alert. Restarting or replacing hardware before checking the home’s account, software, and network can miss the actual cause.
Find the active hub and record the exact alert
- Open the Home app, tap More, then Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges.
- Check the hub shown at the top; that is the active hub. If multiple hubs are listed, do not assume the newest one is active.
- Note the full message shown when setup or connectivity fails. Use the matching section below.
HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically after setup. An Apple TV becomes a hub after it has been added to a room. Only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV as a hub. If you want to choose which eligible device is preferred, turn off Automatic Selection in Home Hubs & Bridges. Apple’s current guidance does not support using an iPad as a home hub. “Home Hub Required” or “Software Update Required”
These alerts can appear while adding an accessory. Work through the checks in this order before considering a device replacement:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Update the active hub. Install the available software update on the hub shown at the top of Home Hubs & Bridges.
- Restart the active hub, then try adding the accessory again.
- Check the account. Use an iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account used to set up the home.
- Check Wi-Fi and interference. Confirm the device showing the error is connected to Wi-Fi and that wireless interference is not disrupting the connection.
- Check Apple TV Ethernet connections. If the active Apple TV reaches the internet through Ethernet, Apple advises connecting it to Wi-Fi on the same network as the iPhone or iPad.
- Investigate device network settings. If the alert persists, consider resetting network settings on the iPhone or iPad showing it, and check whether VPN or third-party security software is affecting connectivity.

“Setup Failed” or HomePod setup does not appear
Prepare the iPhone or iPad
Set up HomePod with an iPhone or iPad, not a Mac. HomePod uses the Wi-Fi network connected to that setup device, so connect the iPhone or iPad to the intended network before trying again. Apple does not recommend using a personal hotspot for setup. Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled and that the Home and Apple Music apps are installed. Apple also lists Apple Account two-factor authentication and iCloud Passwords and Keychain as setup requirements; if the home already has accessories, use the home owner’s Apple Account.
Apple’s HomePod setup article gives iOS 16.3 or later for setting up HomePod (2nd generation). That is a model-specific minimum stated on that support page, not a general recommendation to use an old operating system. Apple Support: If you can’t set up HomePod or HomePod mini

Bring up the setup screen
- Unlock the iPhone or iPad and hold it near HomePod.
- If the setup screen does not appear, lock and unlock the device and hold it near HomePod again.
- If it still does not appear, open Home > Add Accessory > More options > HomePod.
- If HomePod remains undiscoverable, follow Apple’s instructions to reset HomePod and retry setup.
If “Loading Accessories and Scenes” continues for more than 30 minutes, Apple says an option to reset the home may appear. A home reset means adding accessories and home settings again, so do not treat it as a routine first step.

For “Wi-Fi Incompatible,” forget the Wi-Fi network on the iPhone or iPad, reconnect to it, and retry HomePod setup. If the alert concerns a 6 GHz network, Apple advises using the same network name across supported 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands.

HomePod mini flashes orange
If HomePod mini repeatedly flashes orange during setup, Apple identifies a computer connection or a power adapter not rated at 20W (9V, 2.22A) as possible causes. Disconnect it from the computer and retry with a 20W adapter.
“Network Issue” or “No Internet” on HomePod
- Restart HomePod.
- Confirm the modem and router have power, then restart both.
- Check that HomePod and the iPhone use the same preferred Wi-Fi network. The HomePod page in the Home app provides a Wi-Fi Network setting.
- Check HomePod’s signal display. Apple classifies two bars or fewer as weak; move HomePod nearer the router or access point and reduce likely wireless interference.
- If Home reports a network mismatch, confirm HomePod and the active hub are on the same network.
See Apple Support: If HomePod has a “Network Issue” or “No Internet” for Apple’s connectivity guidance.

“Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”
These alerts point to a Thread capability requirement, not necessarily a general Wi-Fi failure. A Thread accessory may need a compatible Thread border router or Thread-enabled device. Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet among its Thread-enabled devices; model and software qualifications can apply to particular uses. A compatible third-party Thread border router may also meet the requirement.

For a battery-powered accessory, a manufacturer firmware update may be needed for iOS 18 compatibility. Check the accessory maker’s update guidance as well as the hub’s capabilities. Apple’s alert guidance is at If you see a “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network” alert.

Check Apple Home compatibility before changing hubs
Apple’s latest Home architecture does not support iPad as a home hub. Its update guidance lists iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, or watchOS 9.2 as minimum versions for connected devices to retain access to an updated home. These are compatibility floors in Apple’s guidance, not recommended versions to stay on. Apple states that support for the previous version of Apple Home ended on February 10, 2026. Check Apple’s Apple Home update guidance for the current compatibility details before changing devices.
When a different hub is actually needed
Consider another hub only after the alert-specific account, software, Wi-Fi, and Thread checks. Choose based on the fault you have identified:
Quick Recap
- Current hub support: use a supported HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV; an iPad cannot serve as the hub on the latest Apple Home.
- Thread requirement: confirm the replacement model supports Thread if the accessory needs it.
- Network fit: ensure the device can join the same network required by the iPhone or other active hub.
- Diagnosed problem: replacing a hub will not by itself resolve weak Wi-Fi, an account mismatch, or an accessory firmware issue.
