For a better picture, sound, and privacy experience on Google TV Streamer (4K), start in All settings > Display & Sound to check picture matching and audio output, then review Settings > Privacy > Location and your selected streaming services. The best settings depend on the connected TV, sound system, content, and your preferences; no single switch improves every setup.
Picture: Match the Streamer’s output to your TV and content
Google TV Streamer (4K) supports HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. Whether you see those formats depends on compatible content and display equipment, not just the Streamer. Google recommends a 4K television for the best experience; output resolution is limited by the capabilities of both the TV or display and the Streamer. Google’s Streamer specifications list supported formats.

Open All settings > Display & Sound to find display controls such as resolution, text scaling, dynamic range and color format, Match content frame rate, game mode, and HDR format selection. The options shown vary with the connected TV. If labels differ on your software version or setup, look under this menu for the closest display control.
My non-HDR video looks too saturated
If SDR video appears oversaturated while HDR settings are active, turn on Match content. Google identifies this as the fix for that specific symptom: “To fix the color, you need to turn on Match content.” This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that the TV’s color will be calibrated. Google’s display settings help gives the documented path and guidance.

Choose HDR format handling
For most setups, let apps select an available HDR format rather than manually limiting the formats. Manual HDR format selection can be useful when troubleshooting a display mismatch, but the options your Streamer can use depend on what the TV supports. If HDR video output is not working, check both the Streamer’s format selection and the TV’s input settings.
Check the TV’s HDMI input for HDR
Some TVs require the HDMI signal format for the connected input to be set to an “enhanced” mode before HDR works. Manufacturers use different labels, so consult the TV’s instructions for that input if HDR is missing. A setting on the Streamer cannot enable HDR if the TV or its HDMI configuration does not support it.
Try Match content frame rate for motion cadence
Match content frame rate lets the Streamer match the source video’s frame rate. It is separate from output resolution and HDR format selection. Try it if you prefer playback cadence that follows the film or show’s source; how smoothly the display handles a frame-rate change varies by equipment.

Use game mode to reduce input delay
Google describes Game mode as reducing latency for faster game response. It may help when using the Streamer for games, but it does not change the resolution or HDR capability of the content or display.
Understand what 4K playback requires
A 4K-capable Streamer does not turn non-4K content or a non-4K TV into 4K. Google’s general playback guidance says 4K availability requires a compatible device and at least 15 Mbps download speed; the quality you purchased and the title’s availability also matter. That minimum is a general support requirement, not a promise that every app or video will stream in 4K. Google’s guide to HD, 4K UHD, HDR, and 3D videos explains these dependencies.
Sound: Start with Automatic, then troubleshoot compatibility
Go to All settings > Display & Sound > Audio options > Output format. Google recommends Automatic, which chooses the best audio quality format available to the connected system. This is the simplest choice when you want the Streamer and audio equipment to negotiate a compatible output. Google’s sound settings help documents the options.

When to select a format manually
Manual selection can help when you know the connected TV, receiver, or soundbar supports a particular format and want to test it. Google lists these output choices:

These are format capabilities, not a promise that a particular show or movie contains those channels. Google cautions that the connected TV, A/V receiver, or soundbar should support the selected format; an incompatible choice can cause audio or visual problems. If you change the output format and the change does not take effect, Google says the Streamer may need to be unplugged for one minute and powered back on.
Use manual surround format selection only when needed
The separate control is under All settings > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings > Surround sound format selection > Manual. Use it when you are troubleshooting or need to specify formats supported by your connected audio equipment. If you are unsure, return to Automatic output and confirm the TV, receiver, or soundbar’s supported formats first.

Connect external audio through a supported path
Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for connecting the Streamer to a TV, receiver, or soundbar for optimal performance; the cable is sold separately. If the Streamer connects directly to the TV, Google says the audio system should connect to the TV’s eARC HDMI port using an HDMI 2.1 cable for high-quality audio. These connection recommendations do not add formats that the TV or audio equipment does not support. Google’s Streamer setup and product information covers the connection guidance.

Google says Google TV may use watchlists and watch activity, streaming services, approximate location, user and device IDs, app interactions, installed apps, crash logs, diagnostics, analytics, and personalization information for product features and personalization. Voice queries can also return results from other apps in use on the device. Privacy controls are separate preferences rather than one all-or-nothing switch. Google’s explanation of how Google TV handles data describes these categories.
Turn off device location if you do not want location-based access
To disable Google TV device location, open Settings > Privacy > Location and turn Location off. When Location is on, apps granted permission can use device location for location-based information, services, or ads. Google says that with Location off, wireless signals and sensor information are not collected for location accuracy and location-based services.

Turning this off does not make the Streamer anonymous: Google notes that an internet-connected device can still reveal general location through its IP address. Nor does the Location control itself disable watch activity, diagnostics, or advertising.
Choose streaming services for recommendations
Google says recommendations can draw on viewing history, owned content, and the streaming services selected on the device. When configuring services, select those your household subscribes to so recommendations are more relevant. If you want to change personalization behavior, review service choices and account activity separately; the location control does not govern those settings.
Know what location and recommendation controls do not promise
Google TV and Android TV may show labeled ads for content available through Google TV, Play, or third-party apps, and partner apps may display their own ads. Google’s description of these features does not say that disabling device location stops ads or all data use. Adjust each control for its stated purpose rather than assuming one privacy setting covers the rest. Google’s overview of how Google TV and Android TV work provides further context.
