How to Check Starlink Availability and Expected Speeds Before You Subscribe

Check the exact service address on Starlink’s official availability map before you compare plans or buy hardware. The result will show whether the address is available, coming soon, or still awaiting coverage or regulatory approval. Then compare the plan-specific speed range, check the proposed dish location in the Starlink app, and review the address-specific checkout terms. Starlink’s current land-user specification is typically 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload and 25–60 ms latency, but those figures are not a guarantee for any individual address.

Why the address check comes first

Starlink availability is determined by service address, not simply by country or a colored coverage area on a broad map. Two nearby properties can receive different results because capacity, licensing, network expansion and local regulatory approval do not change at the same time. Enter the complete address you intend to use for service, including the postal code, in Starlink’s official availability map.

The map and checkout flow are the authoritative places to determine whether Starlink can be ordered for that location. A national coverage claim, a neighbor’s installation or a reseller listing cannot establish eligibility for your property.

What the map status means

Map result Practical meaning What to do next
Available Starlink is accepting service orders for the entered address, subject to the plans and terms shown in checkout. Review every plan, the one-time and recurring charges, delivery details and the installation site before ordering.
Coming Soon Starlink indicates that service is planned for the location but is not currently orderable as normal service. Record any wait-list or notification option and check the map again later. Do not infer a delivery date from a nearby address.
Pending coverage or regulatory approval Coverage or authorization needed to serve the address has not been completed. Wait for the map to change; regulatory or network timing is not established by a neighboring area’s availability.

Coverage and approvals can change. If the map does not offer service today, periodically re-enter the same address rather than assuming that a new kit will work there immediately.

How to check an address before subscribing

  1. Open Starlink’s official availability map. Use the map and checkout flow provided by Starlink, not a generic country-level coverage statement.
  2. Enter the complete service address. Include the street address and postal code. Use the property where the dish will operate, not a billing address in another town.
  3. Record the returned status. Note whether the result says Available, Coming Soon, or pending coverage or regulatory approval. Save a screenshot if you need to compare the result later.
  4. Open every plan offered for that address. The checkout page is where you will see the market-specific service price, hardware charge, taxes, shipping, trial or return terms and any wait-list language.
  5. Write down the plan’s expected speed range. Compare the stated range with Starlink’s published specifications instead of relying on a single “up to” figure.
  6. Check the installation site in the Starlink app. Stand where the terminal would be installed and use the app’s obstruction check to evaluate trees, buildings, terrain and other objects.
  7. Choose hardware for the way you will use it. A fixed residential kit and a portable Starlink Mini address different needs. Confirm the hardware, power and mounting information presented for your market before paying.
  8. Recheck the result immediately before purchase. Plan names, prices, kit availability, coverage and performance goals can change.

Expected Starlink speeds: the numbers that matter

Starlink’s current specifications say users on land typically experience 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload and 25–60 ms latency. Starlink also says a majority of users experience download speeds above 100 Mbps. These are typical network-level figures, not a promise that every address, plan or hour will reach the top of the range.

Performance varies with location, time of day and the precedence Starlink gives your data under your service plan. High usage can reduce the speed available to an individual customer. A speed test at a quiet time therefore cannot establish what the same connection will deliver during the evening peak.

Published ranges by plan

Plan category Expected download range Expected upload range How to interpret it
Standard fixed 25–100 Mbps 5–10 Mbps For a stationary installation using the standard service priority shown at checkout.
Priority fixed 40–220 Mbps 8–25 Mbps A higher expected range and higher network precedence than Standard, subject to the address and plan terms.
Mobile 5–50 Mbps 2–10 Mbps Designed for mobile use; the published range is lower than the fixed-plan ranges.
Mobile Priority 40–220 Mbps 8–25 Mbps Mobile service with the higher priority and range listed in Starlink’s specifications.

The ranges are not interchangeable. A Mobile plan’s 5–50 Mbps download expectation should not be judged against the 40–220 Mbps range published for Priority fixed service, and neither should be treated as a guaranteed minimum. Your checkout page may use different plan names or show different commercial terms by market, so use the figures above as the published technical reference and the address-specific offer as the purchasing authority.

Download speed

Download capacity affects activities such as loading websites, downloading files, updating games and watching video. The published Standard fixed range starts at 25 Mbps and tops out at 100 Mbps, while Priority fixed and Mobile Priority extend to 220 Mbps. Mobile is listed at 5–50 Mbps. Actual throughput can move within or below those ranges when the network is busy or conditions at the terminal are poor.

Upload speed

Upload capacity matters for sending large files, cloud backups, video calls and live broadcasts. Starlink lists 5–10 Mbps for Standard fixed, 8–25 Mbps for Priority fixed, 2–10 Mbps for Mobile and 8–25 Mbps for Mobile Priority. Upload performance is separate from download performance; a fast download test does not demonstrate that the connection can sustain an equivalent upload.

Latency

Starlink’s typical land latency is 25–60 ms. Latency is the delay before data begins moving between your connection and the destination, so it affects responsiveness more than bulk download capacity. The specification is a typical range, not a guaranteed value for every application, route or time of day.

What peak-hour performance really means

Starlink explicitly warns that actual speeds can be lower during high usage. The network gives data different precedence according to the service plan, so congestion can affect Standard and Priority customers differently. That does not make a Priority plan a guaranteed speed floor; it means the plan’s traffic receives the precedence described by Starlink when capacity is contested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For context, Starlink reported a U.S. median download speed of nearly 200 Mbps across more than two million active customers during peak demand in July 2025. That is a historical population statistic. It combines many addresses, plans and network conditions and cannot predict the result at your property. Use it to understand the scale of the network, not to replace the address-level check or the plan range.

A practical way to evaluate the range

  • For ordinary browsing and streaming: Check whether the lower end of the plan’s range is sufficient for the number of people and devices that will be active at once.
  • For work from home: Pay attention to the upload range and latency, not only the maximum download number.
  • For large uploads or live video: Treat the upload range as the limiting specification and allow for reductions during busy periods.
  • For gaming or interactive applications: Review latency and stability, and do not assume that a high download ceiling guarantees a particular in-game experience.
  • For a mobile setup: Use the Mobile or Mobile Priority range that matches the intended plan; do not apply a fixed-plan expectation to a portable service.

Checking trees, buildings and other obstructions

Starlink requires an unobstructed view of the sky. Its official guidance is: “Starlink requires an unobstructed view of the sky. Download the Starlink app to determine your best install location.” The app’s obstruction check is therefore a prerequisite, not an optional optimization.

How to perform the obstruction check

  1. Install the Starlink app on a phone or tablet before finalizing the mounting location.
  2. Go to the proposed terminal position, including the roof, pole, balcony or ground location you are considering.
  3. Use the app’s obstruction tool and hold the device so it can evaluate the sky above the planned installation point.
  4. Repeat the scan at alternative positions if trees, rooflines, neighboring buildings or terrain appear in the sky view.
  5. Choose the position with the clearest view, then confirm that the selected kit’s mounting and power requirements can be met at that location.

Obstructions can interrupt service and reduce practical performance. A location that looks open from a window may still have branches or roof edges in the terminal’s field of view, and seasonal foliage can change the result. If every practical location has substantial obstructions, the published speed range will not describe the experience reliably because interruptions may become the dominant problem.

Choosing fixed hardware or Starlink Mini

Hardware selection should follow the way you will use the connection, not just the largest number in a specification sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fixed residential hardware

A fixed kit is intended for a stationary service address. Compare it with the fixed plan shown in checkout, and verify the proposed installation site with the app. The exact kit, mounting options, power details and charges depend on the market and the offer attached to the address, so rely on the hardware information displayed for your order.

Starlink Mini

Starlink describes Starlink Mini as a portable kit with a built-in Wi‑Fi router and maximum download speeds over 200 Mbps. Its portability can make it a better fit for customers who need service in more than one approved location, while the integrated router can simplify a small or temporary setup. “Over 200 Mbps” is a maximum description, not a sustained promise; the applicable Mobile or Mobile Priority range, congestion and sky view still determine everyday performance.

Questions to answer before selecting a kit

  • Will the service remain at one address, or must the hardware travel?
  • Does the plan offered for the address match the hardware category you intend to use?
  • Can the proposed location provide the unobstructed sky view identified by the app?
  • Are the power, cable length and mounting arrangements shown in checkout practical for that location?
  • Does the expected upload and download range fit the work, streaming or travel use case?

If the checkout page does not state a value for a particular power or mounting detail, do not assume that a fixed and portable kit are interchangeable. Confirm the model-specific hardware information before ordering.

Comparing Standard fixed and Priority fixed

For a stationary home or business, the central comparison is the expected range and the treatment of traffic during congestion. Both are fixed services, so portability is not the deciding factor.

Compare the monthly price, hardware charge, taxes, shipping and trial or return terms displayed for your address before deciding. Because those commercial terms are market-specific, a general price quoted elsewhere may be wrong for your order.

Understanding the checkout offer and total cost

Availability does not tell you the final amount you will pay. Once the map accepts the address, inspect the checkout summary for:

  • Monthly service price and the exact plan name.
  • Hardware charge or kit price.
  • Taxes and any other regional charges.
  • Shipping cost and estimated delivery information.
  • Trial, cancellation and return terms.
  • Any wait-list, deposit or market-specific language.

These details were not resolved for a particular address and can change over time. Read the final order screen immediately before payment, even if you checked the map earlier in the day.

What to do when the address is unavailable

If the map says Coming Soon

Use any notification or wait-list option offered for the address and recheck the map later. Do not use a neighbor’s order confirmation as evidence that your property can be activated, and do not infer a delivery date unless Starlink states one for your address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If coverage or regulatory approval is pending

The missing approval or coverage work may be outside your control. Keep the exact address on file, monitor the official map and reassess only when the status changes. A kit purchased for another address may not solve an eligibility restriction.

If the map rejects a valid address

Check the spelling, unit number and postal code, then submit the property’s full service address again. If the result remains inconsistent with the location, use Starlink’s support channel linked from its official customer pages rather than relying on an unofficial coverage map.

Diagnosing disappointing speeds after activation

Speed is lower only at busy times

This pattern is consistent with Starlink’s warning that performance varies by time of day, location and service-plan precedence. Compare results at different times before concluding that the hardware is defective, and verify which plan is active.

Service drops or pauses

Run the Starlink app’s obstruction check again. Trees, buildings, terrain and other objects can interrupt the required sky view even after an initial installation. Test an alternative location if the app identifies obstructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download is acceptable but upload is inadequate

Compare the measured upload with the plan’s published range. Standard fixed and Mobile have lower upload ranges than Priority fixed and Mobile Priority. If your workload depends on backups, large file transfers or live video, upload capacity should be part of the plan decision from the beginning.

A neighboring customer reports a different result

That report does not replace your address check. Local load, plan precedence, terminal placement and obstructions can differ between properties, and Starlink’s aggregate U.S. statistic is not an address-level guarantee.

A decision checklist before you subscribe

  • Entered the complete service address and postal code in the official map.
  • Recorded the exact status: Available, Coming Soon, or pending coverage or regulatory approval.
  • Compared the plan-specific download and upload range with your actual workload.
  • Allowed for lower performance during high-usage periods.
  • Checked the proposed installation point in the Starlink app.
  • Confirmed that trees, buildings and terrain do not create significant obstructions.
  • Selected fixed hardware or Starlink Mini according to whether the service must travel.
  • Reviewed the address-specific service price, hardware charge, taxes, shipping and trial or return terms.
  • Rechecked the map and checkout immediately before payment.

The most reliable expectation to take away

Starlink can provide high-speed satellite internet, but the meaningful question is not whether Starlink covers a country. It is whether your exact address is orderable, whether the installation site has a clear sky view and whether the plan’s published range fits your use during busy hours. Start with the address map, validate the site in the app, compare the four plan ranges and treat network-wide statistics as context rather than a personal guarantee.
