How to Check SSD Speed in Windows 11: Three Methods Explained

Task Manager shows live SSD activity, while WinSAT and CrystalDiskMark offer test options. Learn how to run each and interpret the results carefully.

Use Task Manager to see what your SSD is doing right now, WinSAT for a legacy-documented command-line test, or CrystalDiskMark for a configurable benchmark. They measure different things: a low idle reading in Task Manager is normal, and no single speed result proves that a drive is healthy or faulty.

Which SSD speed check should you use?

Method Best for What to know
Task Manager Viewing live disk activity during a task Readings depend on what the computer is doing; this is not a controlled maximum-speed benchmark.
WinSAT Running a documented command-line disk test Microsoft’s cited syntax page is legacy documentation whose applicability list stops at Windows 8.
CrystalDiskMark Running configured sequential, random, read, write, or mixed tests Results depend on test settings and system conditions; compare like-for-like runs.

Check live SSD activity in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Choose Performance, then select the disk that corresponds to your SSD. If several disks or partitions appear, confirm which device or volume you are viewing.
  3. Watch the activity and transfer figures while doing a representative task, such as copying a large file. Microsoft describes Task Manager as a way to monitor performance and resource use, including disk activity, and its Performance view displays graphs. Microsoft’s Task Manager overview provides more context.

Task Manager answers “What is my drive doing now?” An idle SSD may show little or no throughput; that reading does not measure its maximum capability. A workload can also produce high active time without equally high transfer speed, because activity and throughput describe different things. Neither figure alone diagnoses a fault.

Run a WinSAT disk test from the command line

Microsoft’s documented example is winsat disk -seq -read -drive c, which requests a sequential read test for drive C. The reference also documents selectors for random tests and writes, drive selection with -drive or -n, and XML output. It says to run the command from an elevated command prompt. Read Microsoft’s WinSAT disk syntax reference.

  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Enter the example command, changing the drive letter if needed: winsat disk -seq -read -drive c.
  3. Review the output as a command-line test result, not as a universal pass/fail score.

The cited Microsoft page is a previous-versions article last updated in 2016, and its applicability list does not include Windows 11. Treat this as legacy-documented syntax, not as verified support on every current Windows 11 build. If the command is unavailable or behaves differently on your system, use Task Manager for live activity or CrystalDiskMark for a dedicated benchmark.

Benchmark with CrystalDiskMark

CrystalDiskMark is the dedicated benchmark of these three methods. Its official product page lists Windows 11 support and sequential, random, read, write, and mixed tests, along with peak, real-world, and demo modes. Download it from Crystal Dew World’s official CrystalDiskMark page, and check the release listing there. The page lists version 9.0.3 dated 2026-05-24; release information can change.

  1. Open CrystalDiskMark and select the correct SSD or drive in the application.
  2. Choose the test profile and settings you want to run. Sequential tests show large-block transfer behavior; random tests represent small, scattered input/output. Read, write, and mixed tests examine different operations.
  3. Run the selected tests. For a useful comparison, note the application version, drive, profile, test size, and test-data choice.

Results are affected by factors including test-file size and position, fragmentation, controller, CPU, and test data. Crystal Dew World warns that results are not compatible between different major versions, so compare runs made with the same major version and matching settings. Its product page also warns that “CrystalDiskMark may shorten SSD/USB Memory life.” That is the vendor’s caution, not an independently measured estimate of risk; avoid unnecessary repeated runs, particularly with large test settings.

How to interpret a result without overreading it

  • Low Task Manager speed while idle: expected when little or no disk work is happening. Check activity during a representative task instead.
  • High active time but modest transfer speed: not, by itself, proof that the SSD is defective. Look at the workload and the process using the disk before drawing conclusions.
  • A benchmark below an expected number: first identify the exact drive model and interface, then check its specifications under comparable conditions. There is no universal SSD speed threshold established here.
  • Before-and-after checks: keep the benchmark version, settings, target drive, and general system conditions consistent. Close heavy background transfers so another workload is not saturating the drive.

Speed testing is separate from assessing drive health. A benchmark score does not establish that an SSD is healthy or failing; a slow file operation alone is not a reason to conclude that the drive needs replacement.
