If your tablet feels too hot, stop demanding tasks, unplug it if it is charging, move it away from heat and direct sunlight, and let it cool naturally. Follow any temperature warning on screen. A tablet can become warm during normal heavy use or charging, but persistent or repeated overheating deserves support.
What should I do if my tablet overheats?
- Stop demanding activity. Pause games, video recording, navigation, streaming, large transfers, and other intensive tasks. Close active apps and give the tablet time to cool.
- Disconnect charging. If it is plugged in, unplug it while it cools. Check the cable and charger for damage, and use equipment compatible with your exact tablet. Resume charging only after the device has cooled.
- Move it to a cooler, ventilated place. Keep it out of direct sun and away from hot cars, heaters, bedding, bags, or enclosed spaces that trap heat. Let it cool naturally rather than trying to force-cool it.
- Reduce ongoing activity. Lower screen brightness and turn off Wi-Fi, GPS, or Bluetooth if you are not using them. On Galaxy devices, Samsung also suggests Device Care optimization and Power saving mode; names and availability vary by model and software.
- Follow any temperature warning. For an iPad displaying a temperature warning, Apple says to turn it off, move it somewhere cooler and out of the sun, and allow it to cool. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad temperature guidance.
Do not put a hot tablet in a refrigerator or freezer; allow it to return to a normal temperature in a suitable room.

Why is my tablet getting hot?
Heavy processing or graphics
Games, camera recording, GPS navigation, high-quality video streaming, and sustained multitasking can make a tablet warm because its processor and other components are working harder.

Charging and accessories
Charging can produce warmth, and intensive use while charging can add to it. Fast or wireless charging may also contribute, depending on the device. If heat occurs around charging, inspect the charger and cable and verify compatibility with your tablet rather than assuming a particular wattage or accessory will fix the problem. Samsung recommends approved charging equipment. Apple says removing an iPad case may help if it tends to heat while charging; its thermally limited charging guidance applies to iPad using iPadOS 18 or later.
Hot surroundings or trapped heat
Direct sunlight, a parked car, a heater, or a poorly ventilated place can raise a tablet’s temperature. Bedding and bags can trap heat around the device.

Connectivity demands
Samsung also lists extended hotspot use and weak signal or roaming conditions as potential contributors for Galaxy devices. The effect depends on the tablet and its circumstances.

Is it normal for a tablet to get warm while charging?
Some warmth during charging can be expected, just as temporary warmth can occur during demanding tasks or background setup. What matters is the context: a tablet in a hot environment, running intensive apps while charging, or using damaged or incompatible charging equipment has additional sources of heat. If it becomes too hot, unplug it, stop intensive use, and let it cool before charging again.

Apple says its iPads and iPhones are designed for ambient use from 0–35°C (32–95°F); Samsung US lists 32–95°F as normal ambient operating conditions for Galaxy devices. These are manufacturer-specific operating ranges, not a universal overheating threshold for every tablet. Apple separately lists a storage range of -20–45°C (-4–113°F); that is a storage specification, not a recommended operating temperature. Consult the support information for your model if you need its exact limits.

Get help from the tablet’s manufacturer or an authorized service provider if it remains too hot to touch, repeatedly displays temperature warnings or shuts down, or continues heating after obvious triggers have been removed and it has had time to cool. Samsung specifically advises contacting support if a Galaxy device remains too warm to touch. Warmth alone does not establish that the battery has failed.

Temporary safeguards such as a dimmed screen, slower performance, or paused charging can be ways a device limits heat. Apple’s statement that a device may continue to be used when it shows no temperature warning applies to its iPhone and iPad guidance, not to all tablet brands. Follow your own device’s on-screen warning and manufacturer instructions.
