Windows 11 can show temperature in Settings for supported NVMe SSDs, but it does not provide the same built-in temperature display for SATA SSDs or hard drives. For other drives, try PowerShell’s storage reliability counters or a compatible SMART utility. A missing reading means the drive or its connection may not be exposing the data—not that the drive is necessarily cool or failing.
Check an NVMe SSD in Windows Settings
For a supported NVMe SSD, Windows displays temperature with its disk-health information:

- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage.
- Expand Advanced storage settings and select Disks & volumes.
- Select the relevant disk, then open Properties.
- Review the disk-health information. Temperature appears when Windows and the device make it available.
Microsoft says the temperature shown is the overall device temperature in degrees Celsius. Its built-in storage health monitoring covers NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or HDDs. See Microsoft’s storage-device warning guidance.

Windows also provides storage reliability counters. Open PowerShell and run:

Get-PhysicalDisk | Get-StorageReliabilityCounter | Select-Object DeviceId, Temperature, TemperatureMaxThe command asks Windows for device-reported reliability data. The counters can include temperature, maximum temperature, wear, errors and time in use; which values appear depends on what the device and storage path expose. Microsoft documents the reliability counter fields and the Get-StorageReliabilityCounter cmdlet.
- Temperature is reported in degrees Celsius.
- TemperatureMax is the maximum temperature at which that device can operate normally; it is not a universal safe-temperature threshold for all drives.
If a field is blank or unavailable, the reading may not be exposed by the drive, driver, controller or connection path. Do not interpret a blank as proof that the drive is cool or defective. Microsoft describes these counters as dynamic information obtained from the storage device when needed.

Use a SMART utility when Windows does not show a reading
CrystalDiskInfo is a third-party option for viewing drive temperature and health information. Its publisher lists Windows 11 support and describes HDD and SSD monitoring. Check the official CrystalDiskInfo page for current downloads and details. Compatibility varies: the publisher says most RAID controllers are unsupported and operation is not guaranteed in every environment; see its controller compatibility information.

What the temperature reading means—and what it cannot tell you
A reading is a sensor value reported by the drive or its storage path. For NVMe, Microsoft describes the composite temperature as the overall device temperature, including its controller and NVM subsystem. NVMe devices also report their own warning and critical temperature thresholds; those are device-specific rather than one limit shared by every drive. There is no single universal safe temperature established for all NVMe SSDs, SATA SSDs and HDDs. Check the specifications and warnings for the exact drive model instead of applying a blanket cutoff.

Temperature alone is not a complete drive-health diagnosis. Windows can separately report critical storage warnings related to spare capacity, degraded reliability or a read-only state. If Windows shows a critical warning, Microsoft recommends backing up your data and seeking support.
