Google Nest Wifi Pro is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E mesh router with 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, Matter support, and a built-in Thread border router. It makes the most sense if you want a straightforward Google Home mesh and have Wi-Fi 6E devices; it is a poor upgrade if your plan is to keep using older Google Wifi or Nest Wifi points, because they cannot join the Pro mesh. Google’s coverage and speed figures are manufacturer claims, not promises of real-world performance.
What Nest Wifi Pro does—and what it does not
Nest Wifi Pro is a router system that distributes a wireless network through one or more Pro units. The first router connects to your existing modem and broadband service; it does not replace the modem. Google identifies the hardware as model G6ZUC and lists a Qualcomm IPQ5018 dual-core 1.0 GHz processor, 1 GB DDR3L memory, 4 GB eMMC storage, Bluetooth 5.0, WPA3, and automatic security updates. Google’s technical specifications also list support for Matter and an integrated Thread border router.

Each router has two Ethernet ports supporting wired speeds up to 1 Gbps. That is useful for connecting the router to a modem or wiring a device, but it also sets a limit: a wired connection through these ports cannot deliver more than 1 Gbps. The router’s advertised maximum of up to 5.4 Gbps is a combined speed across its bands, not a typical single-device speed or guaranteed internet throughput. Actual results depend on the client, channel width, broadband service, network conditions, local regulations, and the home environment. Google Store’s product information provides the headline speed and hardware details.

Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz band. To use that band, a device must support Wi-Fi 6E; a router upgrade alone does not give older phones, laptops, or smart-home devices 6 GHz capability. Older Wi-Fi clients can still connect on compatible bands. Google explains this in its Wi-Fi 6E overview.
#1 Best Overall
- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
The practical benefit therefore depends on the devices in your home and the conditions around them. If most clients cannot use 6 GHz, the band is not a direct upgrade for those devices. Before buying, check the wireless specifications of the devices you expect to benefit, as well as whether the mesh’s coverage, wired ports, and Google Home controls fit your needs.
How much area does one router cover?
Google claims coverage of up to 2,200 square feet per Nest Wifi Pro router. Its listed estimates are up to 4,400 square feet for a two-pack and 6,600 square feet for a three-pack. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements or guarantees for a specific home. Walls, construction materials, floor plan, placement, interference, and client devices can all affect the usable signal. See Google’s current product page for the published coverage figures.

Use those numbers as a starting point rather than a promise that every corner will receive a strong connection. A multi-level or irregularly shaped home may behave differently from an open layout with the same floor area. The additional Pro routers act as mesh points; their location within the home matters to the resulting coverage.

Can you add Nest Wifi Pro to an older Google Wifi mesh?
No. Nest Wifi Pro cannot be mixed into a mesh with earlier Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points. If you replace an older Google mesh, Google’s setup instructions call for removing the existing network and creating a separate Pro network. Google’s setup and migration guide says configurations stored in the old network are erased and must be recreated.

Keeping the old network name and password may let devices reconnect without changing their saved credentials, but it does not preserve the old network configuration. Google supports only one Wi-Fi network per home in Google Home and advises against running the old and Pro networks at the same location because they may interfere with each other. Treat the change as a migration and plan to rebuild any settings you need.
Smart-home features and software
The built-in Thread border router and Matter support may be useful if you use Google Home with compatible smart-home devices. They are smart-home capabilities, not a guarantee that every Matter device or feature will work in every region or setup; check the device’s compatibility and current Google Home support before relying on a particular integration. Google lists these features in its technical specifications.

Google’s release history lists software version 3.78.518349, dated February 23, 2026, with mesh performance and robustness improvements plus stability and security vulnerability fixes. Google says its Wi-Fi devices receive automatic updates. The release date is Google’s listed update date; it does not establish that a particular unit has already received it. Check Google’s Nest Wifi release notes for the published update history.
Who should consider Nest Wifi Pro?
- A reasonable fit: You want a Google Home-managed mesh, have or plan to use Wi-Fi 6E clients, and are comfortable replacing rather than extending an older Google mesh.
- Look elsewhere or keep your current system: You need to add existing Google Wifi or Nest Wifi points to the same mesh, require Ethernet ports faster than 1 Gbps, or expect the 5.4 Gbps combined rating to represent one device’s internet speed.
- Check before choosing a pack: Compare Google’s coverage estimates with your home’s layout and construction, and consider how many wired connections and Wi-Fi 6E-capable clients you actually have.
Google’s product information and technical specifications establish the headline features and manufacturer claims. They do not establish an independent performance ranking against competing mesh systems, so a lab-tested speed or range verdict is not warranted here.
