Use your device’s built-in monitor to see current RAM use and identify the largest apps or processes: Task Manager on Windows, Activity Monitor on Mac, or Task Manager on a Chromebook. A high reading by itself does not prove there is a problem; interpret it alongside what the computer is doing and the memory indicators your system provides.
Check RAM usage on Windows
Windows 10
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Processes tab and inspect the Memory column to find which entries are using the most memory.
These steps are documented by Microsoft for Windows 10. Its guidance uses Runtime Broker as an example of a process to check in the Processes tab. The cited instructions do not establish current Windows 11 labels or behavior, so the exact path above is specifically for Windows 10. Microsoft: Runtime Broker is using too much memory

Check RAM usage on a Mac
- Open Activity Monitor.
- Click Memory to view memory use by app and the system-wide indicators at the bottom of the window.
- Look through the app list for large entries. If you are investigating compression, Apple’s guide also refers to the Compressed Memory column and each app’s VM Compressed value.
Apple’s Activity Monitor guide explains the indicators this way:
- Physical Memory is the installed RAM; Memory Used is the amount currently in use.
- App Memory is used by apps. Wired Memory is required by the system and remains in RAM.
- Compressed shows memory compressed to make more RAM available. Apple says inactive apps in memory are compressed as the computer approaches its maximum memory capacity.
- Cached Files are held in unused memory to improve performance and can be overwritten when needed.
- Swap Used is startup-disk space used to move unused files to and from RAM.
- Memory Pressure is a graph of how efficiently memory is serving processing needs. Apple says it is determined by free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and cached files.
That is why the used-memory total alone can be misleading: cached files can be overwritten, while compression and swap are part of how macOS manages memory. Check the pressure graph alongside the app list. Apple: View memory usage in Activity Monitor

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Check RAM usage on a Chromebook
Find the largest processes
- Press Shift+Esc to open ChromeOS Task Manager.
- Inspect the listed apps and processes to see which are using memory. If tabs refresh when memory is low, Google suggests closing apps or windows you are not using.

Run a system memory test
For a separate diagnostic check, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics, or search for Diagnostics from the launcher. Google documents Diagnostics for ChromeOS version 90 and later. Its Memory test measures system memory; a failed test could indicate faulty memory. Google: Use Diagnostics to troubleshoot your Chromebook
How to interpret the largest memory entry
Treat the largest app or process as a clue, not an automatic diagnosis. Check whether it is an app you recognize, a browser tab or extension, or an operating-system process. Compare memory use while the slowdown is happening rather than relying on a single snapshot, and use the system-wide indicators available on your device.

- On a Mac, consider Memory Pressure, compression, cached files, and swap alongside individual app memory.
- On a Chromebook, close unused apps or windows if low memory is causing tabs to refresh; use Diagnostics if you want to test system memory.
- On a managed Windows device where Chrome is slow, Google’s enterprise guidance recommends recording when the slowdown occurs and examining processes. A renderer may handle one or more tabs or extensions, and insufficient system memory can slow Chrome’s main process. This browser-specific advice is for the managed-device troubleshooting context described by Google, not a universal diagnosis for every Chrome slowdown. The official guidance cited here does not set a universal threshold for “too much” RAM use. Do not end an unfamiliar system process or buy more RAM based only on one reading. If the device remains slow, investigate the particular app or device issue using the support guidance for that platform.
