The mine key comes from the Eternal Fire priest outside Devil’s Pit: accept the quest, finish the conversation, clear the bandits, then use the key on the large mine gate. You do not find the key inside the mine.
Where to get the mine key
Find Devil’s Pit in Velen and speak with the Eternal Fire priest, also described as a young deacon, standing outside the pit. Accept “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow” and complete the dialogue. How to reach and open the mine gate
- Enter Devil’s Pit and defeat the bandits, described in the guides as deserters.
- Descend to the large mine gate.
- Use the key received from the priest to unlock the entrance.
- Continue into the mine and follow the quest objective. The key-and-gate steps are only the start of the quest; further investigation and encounters follow.
The key opens the locked entrance; it is not a separate pickup inside the mine. TheSixthAxis’ walkthrough describes the handoff and gate, while High on Films corroborates the Devil’s Pit progression.
If the key is missing
First check that you accepted the quest and let the priest’s dialogue finish, then make sure the bandit encounter is complete. A Steam Community discussion includes a player report of not receiving the key; a reply suggested defeating all bandits and waiting for a cutscene, but the discussion does not establish that as a dependable fix. The Steam discussion is anecdotal, not an official troubleshooting notice. No current platform-specific fix is established here, so if those checks fail, look for help specific to your game version and platform.
