Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore buying memory or a drive, check three different things: how much RAM is installed, how it behaves during the work that feels slow, and whether your exact computer can accept an upgrade. Then check how much storage is occupied and how much is free. A single high usage number does not, by itself, prove that an upgrade is needed.
How do I check how much RAM I have?
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Under Device specifications, read the installed RAM amount. The same page lists processor and Windows system-type information.
This is the computer’s installed physical memory capacity. It is not a measurement of how much memory is being used right now. Windows navigation and labels can vary somewhat by release.

macOS
Open Activity Monitor and select Memory. Read Physical Memory for installed memory and Memory Used for current use. These labels appear alongside live indicators that help explain what memory is doing.

How do I see what is using my RAM?
Windows
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Performance > Memory to inspect overall memory activity, or review the processes list to find apps using resources.
- Check the figures while your usual apps and workload are running, especially when the slowdown occurs.
Task Manager shows current activity, not a permanent verdict on the computer’s capacity. An app using a lot of RAM at one moment does not establish that you need more memory.

Mac
In Activity Monitor > Memory, inspect the app list and the summary values: Memory Pressure, Cached Files, and Swap Used, as well as Memory Used and Physical Memory. Cached files can be reused when needed; swap uses space on the startup disk. A large Memory Used figure alone is not an upgrade diagnosis.
Apple’s guidance is to assess pressure while doing the tasks that feel slow. Green indicates efficient memory use, yellow can indicate that more RAM may be needed in the future, and red indicates a need for more RAM. Apple also notes, “When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.” Apple Support’s Activity Monitor User Guide explains these indicators.

How do I check how much storage space is left on my computer?
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Category breakdown: Open Settings > System > Storage to see categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system or reserved storage.
- Quick free-space check: Open File Explorer > This PC and read the available space shown for each drive.
- Other drives: Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives to inspect additional drives.
- Drive details: Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes to view drive type, capacity, and usage.

How do I know whether my computer needs more RAM?
There is no universal RAM-usage percentage or installed-memory amount that diagnoses every computer. Check the system during your ordinary workload and look for a persistent pattern: the tasks that matter are slow, and memory pressure or resource use is consistently high while those tasks run. On a Mac, Apple’s pressure colors offer context; on Windows, use Task Manager’s Memory view and the processes list. Neither a one-time spike nor a large raw number alone determines the right upgrade.
Likewise, low free storage and RAM pressure are different problems. If the drive is nearly full, freeing or moving files may help with storage constraints, but it does not add physical memory. Conversely, installing RAM does not create more drive space.

Can I upgrade the RAM or storage in my computer?
Upgradeability depends on the exact model. Do not choose parts based only on the amount currently installed or the drive type shown in Windows: those details do not confirm that a replacement part fits or is supported.
Check Mac memory upgradeability
- Hold Option and open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information, then select Hardware > Memory.
- Look in the Memory Slots pane for Upgradeable Memory. Apple says that if the pane is absent, upgradeable memory is not available for that Mac.
See Apple’s Activity Monitor guidance for the model-dependent memory check. For PC upgrade options, Microsoft recommends contacting the computer manufacturer or a retailer; see Find out how much storage your PC has.

Verify parts before buying
For RAM, confirm the supported memory type, maximum capacity, and configuration for the exact computer model. For storage, confirm that the model has a replaceable drive and identify its supported interface, form factor, and capacity. The drive information in Windows can help describe the current disk, but it does not establish replacement compatibility. Also compare the likely benefit with clearing or moving files, the cost and risk of installation, and whether replacing the computer is more practical.
What do Windows 11 minimum requirements tell you?
Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM and a 64 GB or larger storage device among Windows 11’s minimum requirements. These figures describe OS eligibility, not recommended capacities for general use or a personalized upgrade target; Microsoft says apps and features may require more. See Windows 11 specifications and Windows 11 system requirements.
