How to Check PS5 Firmware Compatibility Before Attempting Homebrew

Check the complete firmware string first: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Write down every component, then match that exact point release to a current, chain-specific exploit table. A PS5 firmware number by itself does not prove homebrew compatibility: the exploit chain, kernel component, console hardware revision, tested status and your intended result all matter.

Why the exact firmware string matters

PS5 compatibility is determined by narrow firmware ranges, not simply by a major version such as 13 or 4. A point release can be the difference between a documented, tested path and an untested or patched one. Record the complete value exactly as Sony displays it, including every digit and decimal component.

Compatibility is also chain-specific. A browser or user-mode entry point may only be the first stage. Full homebrew generally requires a kernel exploit and then a homebrew enabler. A table entry that mentions an entry point does not automatically mean that you can run unsigned applications, PS4 package files or Linux.

Community exploit documentation is not a Sony-supported procedure. Running it can involve crashes, data loss, instability, online-service restrictions and warranty or repair implications. Treat the firmware check as a decision point: once you update, you may lose a version that a particular chain supports.

Find and preserve your installed version

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
  2. Read the installed system software version shown by the console. Sony also uses this screen to show Up to date when the console is running the latest official release.
  3. Copy the entire version string into a note or photograph it. Do not shorten it to a major number, round it, or rely on memory.
  4. Before connecting to update services, decide whether preserving this firmware is important to your intended homebrew path.

Sony can notify a console about an update online, and a game disc can request newer system software. Save the version before going online or inserting a disc that may trigger an update prompt. Disable automatic updating only as a precaution; it does not replace checking prompts and confirming what you are installing.

Read a compatibility table correctly

Use a current PS5 exploit table, such as the PS5 DevWiki entries cited by the projects themselves, and inspect the details behind the headline range. For each candidate chain, verify five things:

  • Exact firmware: Your complete point release must fall inside the documented range.
  • Exploit stages: Identify the user-mode entry point, kernel exploit and homebrew enabler separately.
  • Evidence status: Distinguish a tested range from an untested or theoretical claim.
  • Hardware: Check whether the entry covers your original “Phat” console, Slim or Pro revision.
  • Outcome: Confirm whether the chain provides ordinary homebrew, PS4 fpkg support, Linux booting or only an initial exploit.

Do not infer that every PS5 on a listed firmware works identically. A table can report a tested firmware range while limiting support to particular models or requiring a specific entry method.

What the currently documented ranges mean

Chain or project Firmware evidence What it documents Status or limitation
Slopkit (PS5 DevWiki) 7.00–13.60 Exploit chain coverage Reported as tested on 7.00–13.60; 14.00 and later are untested and may be patched.
BD-JB-EX (PS5 DevWiki) 13.60 or earlier BD-JB-EX entry point with a kernel exploit also required The entry is limited to 13.60 or earlier; the entry point alone is not full homebrew.
ps5-hen 1.00–4.51 Homebrew enabler, including homebrew and PS4 fpkg support The project README lists supported point releases within this range. Its displayed changelog is dated 04/15/26.
ps5-linux 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21, 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50 and 4.51 Linux boot workflow Tom’s Hardware reported support for selected original “Phat” versions; the soft mod must be run again after reboot.

These ranges are snapshots of project documentation and reporting available in 2026, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Recheck the project’s current release notes and hardware list immediately before attempting anything.

Firmware 13.60

Firmware 13.60 appears in the documented Slopkit tested range and in the BD-JB-EX entry, which is limited to 13.60 or earlier. That does not mean a 13.60 console is universally compatible: you still need the relevant chain, a supported console model, the required kernel stage and a method that matches your desired result.

Tom’s Hardware reported on 30 September 2026 that the Relapse jailbreak supported 7.00–13.60. The same report noted that some game updates were already requiring 14.00, creating a practical choice between newer game compatibility and preserving a jailbreak-compatible firmware.

Firmware 14.00 and later

The PS5 DevWiki entry described 14.00 and above as untested for Slopkit and warned that those versions may be patched. “Untested” is not a compatibility result. Do not update from 13.60 on the assumption that a later version will work; once installed, a newer system software version may remove the conditions needed by an older chain.

Firmware 1.00 through 4.51

The open-source ps5-hen README documents a homebrew enabler for firmware 1.00 through 4.51 and lists supported point releases. It specifically documents homebrew and PS4 fpkg support. Match your exact point release against the README rather than treating the range as proof that every intermediate build has identical behavior.

Linux-oriented versions

Tom’s Hardware reported on 29 April 2026 that ps5-linux supports selected original “Phat” versions: 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21, 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50 and 4.51. The workflow can use an M.2 SSD, but that drive is an optional part of the Linux path, not a prerequisite for reading your firmware or evaluating compatibility. Because the exploit is a soft mod, it must be run again after each reboot.

Separate entry points, kernel exploits and homebrew enablers

User-mode entry point

A user-mode entry point is the mechanism that starts code in a restricted process, such as a browser or disc-related path. It may be useful for launching the next stage, but it does not by itself provide the privileges needed for system-wide modifications.

Kernel exploit

A kernel exploit reaches a more privileged layer. BD-JB-EX’s current entry explicitly says that a kernel exploit is also required. When a table lists only an entry point, look for a separate, compatible kernel stage and its exact firmware limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Homebrew enabler

A homebrew enabler applies the available exploit stages so unsigned applications can run. The ps5-hen README is an example of documentation that names the end result—homebrew and PS4 fpkg support—rather than merely listing an entry point. Do not substitute a different enabler unless its release notes explicitly support your firmware and hardware.

Check your PS5 hardware revision

Record whether your console is an original “Phat” model, Slim or Pro, and compare that model information with the exploit project’s tested hardware list. Firmware compatibility and hardware compatibility are separate gates. A version that works on an original chassis may not work on a Slim or Pro, even when the software number is identical.

The ps5-linux report is specifically about selected original “Phat” versions. It should not be generalized to Slim or Pro systems. For Slopkit, BD-JB-EX and ps5-hen, consult the current project documentation for model support before proceeding; the firmware ranges alone do not establish universal hardware coverage.

Decide whether to update

Updating is a trade-off between official software support and preserving a potentially compatible firmware. Sony recommends installing the latest update as soon as possible for security and normal functionality. Homebrew users may instead choose to remain on a documented compatible version, accepting that they will miss later system features, security fixes and some game updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Write down the current version and hardware model.
  2. Define the goal: general homebrew, PS4 fpkg support, Linux or access to the newest games and updates.
  3. Find a chain that names that goal. A jailbreak label alone does not prove Linux or package support.
  4. Confirm tested status and model coverage. Treat untested ranges as unverified.
  5. Choose deliberately. Preserve the current firmware if the documented chain fits your goal; update if official security, online access or newer-game compatibility matters more.

Do not insert a game disc or accept an online update prompt until you have made that choice. Some game updates require firmware 14.00 or later, so staying on 13.60 can limit newer releases even when it preserves a documented jailbreak path.

Official offline updating, if you choose to update

If you decide to install an official update manually, Sony’s process uses a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive. Create the folders and filename exactly as shown:

PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP
  1. Format or prepare the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
  2. Create a folder named PS5 at the drive’s top level and an UPDATE folder inside it.
  3. Place Sony’s official PS5UPDATE.PUP file in the UPDATE folder.
  4. Start the console in Safe Mode.
  5. Choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.

Use only Sony’s official update file and follow the current support instructions. Sony states:

“Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also warns that installing update data from another source or method, or on a console altered or modified in any way, “might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data.”

A USB drive is needed for this official offline procedure; it is unrelated to whether your console is compatible with homebrew. An M.2 NVMe SSD is similarly optional for the ps5-linux workflow and does not improve the firmware check itself.

Risks and recovery planning

  • Stability: Exploit chains can crash, require repeated attempts or behave differently across models.
  • Data: Unexpected shutdowns or failed operations can corrupt data. Back up saves and important media through supported methods before experimenting.
  • Online services: Modified software can conflict with network services and may expose an account or console to enforcement risk.
  • Warranty and repair: Sony warns that modified consoles and unofficial update methods may malfunction and may affect warranty or repair service.
  • Firmware irreversibility: Installing a newer official version can remove the conditions required by an older exploit. Do not assume you can return to the previous version.
  • Temporary exploits: A soft mod such as the ps5-linux workflow must be rerun after reboot; a power cycle does not necessarily leave the console in a persistent homebrew state.

Keep the exact firmware record, model information and the project version you used. If a procedure fails, stop rather than repeatedly trying incompatible payloads, and return to the project’s documented recovery instructions. Never use unofficial update files to “restore” a console.

A pre-homebrew compatibility checklist

  • Complete firmware string copied from Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
  • Hardware revision identified as original “Phat,” Slim or Pro.
  • Goal defined: homebrew, PS4 fpkg, Linux or newer-game compatibility.
  • Exploit chain named, with user-mode, kernel and enabler stages understood.
  • Exact point release listed in the current project documentation.
  • Entry marked tested rather than merely theoretical or untested.
  • Hardware model listed as supported.
  • Automatic or prompted updates avoided until the decision is made.
  • Backups completed and online-service risks accepted.
  • Official recovery and update instructions available, including a correctly prepared FAT32 or exFAT USB drive if an offline Sony update is needed.

Practical answers to the common decisions

Can I homebrew a PS5 on firmware 13.60?

Some current documentation reports chains covering 13.60, including Slopkit’s tested 7.00–13.60 range and BD-JB-EX’s 13.60-or-earlier entry. Relapse was also reported as supporting 7.00–13.60 on 30 September 2026. Your answer still depends on the exact chain, hardware revision, kernel stage and desired capability. Do not treat 13.60 as a universal yes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I update if I want homebrew?

Do not update until you have compared your exact version and model with the chain you intend to use. Updating may provide security fixes, online functionality and access to games requiring newer software, but it can also move the console outside a tested exploit range. On 13.60, the documented choice is particularly clear: newer games may require 14.00, while 14.00 and later were untested and potentially patched for the cited Slopkit range.

Does seeing an exploit entry mean I can run homebrew?

No. Confirm the complete chain. A user-mode entry point may need a compatible kernel exploit, and the final homebrew enabler may support a narrower set of point releases or hardware models.

Do I need an SSD or USB drive to check compatibility?

No. Firmware identification requires only the Console Information screen. A FAT32 or exFAT USB drive is required for Sony’s official offline update method, while an M.2 SSD is an optional component of the ps5-linux workflow.
