Yes—LEGO Pokémon sets use the LEGO brick system, so you can use them alongside your existing LEGO bricks. The important distinction is between building with LEGO pieces and using a set’s optional SMART Play features: a set can be buildable with your bricks without including the SMART Brick needed for interactive play. Official guidance does not establish compatibility with third-party brick brands, and LEGO’s DUPLO guidance has a specific stud-count rule.
Will LEGO Pokémon sets work with my LEGO bricks?
For standard LEGO-system bricks, the available official guidance supports using LEGO Pokémon sets with other LEGO sets. The LEGO Group announced the Pokémon range with The Pokémon Company International and described LEGO SMART Play as an expansion of its existing LEGO System in Play. In its 2026 announcement, dated June 2, LEGO Group Chief Marketing and Product Officer Julia Goldin said SMART Play would be integrated into the latest LEGO Pokémon sets.

That means you can treat a Pokémon model as part of your LEGO building collection: add compatible LEGO-system pieces to a build, or use pieces from the set in your own creations. This is a statement about the LEGO system, not a guarantee that every individual piece will fit every other piece in every arrangement. Shape, connection points, and the way you want to build still matter.
It also does not establish that bricks from other manufacturers fit LEGO pieces. If “my bricks” means a third-party brand rather than LEGO bricks, the official compatibility statements described here do not verify that fit. Check the specific manufacturer’s guidance or test a small connection before relying on it in a larger build.

Building compatibility is different from SMART Play compatibility
There are two questions to check when you look at a LEGO Pokémon set:
- Can I build with its LEGO pieces? This is the ordinary brick-system question. The LEGO Pokémon range is part of LEGO’s System in Play.
- Can I use its interactive SMART Play features? This depends on which SMART Play components the box includes, especially whether it contains a SMART Brick.
LEGO says SMART Bricks, SMART Tags, and SMART Minifigures can be combined with any LEGO sets. That describes how the SMART Play elements relate to LEGO sets; it does not mean that every set includes those electronic or tagged components. A set may be compatible with SMART Play while still requiring a SMART Brick from another set to activate those features.
Rank #2
- INCLUDES A LEGO SMART BRICK – The LEGO Pokémon SMART Play: Training House with Pikachu (72164) building toy is a LEGO SMART Play All-in-One Set, which features a Pokémon figure, a SMART Brick, a SMART Charger and 4 SMART Tags to power up interactive play
- INTERACTIVE POKÉMON ADVENTURES – When the SMART Brick is built into the Pikachu figure, it will generate responsive lights and sounds when it comes close to a SMART Tag, such as when training for battles
- YOU ARE THE TRAINER NOW – The SMART Brick will respond with lights, sounds and other interactions as it moves close to a SMART Tag or reacts to how kids move and play, creating endless Pokémon adventures with Pikachu
- SCREEN-FREE PLAYTIME – Kids join friends and family to prepare Pikachu for battle and embark on endless role-play adventures with the popular Pokémon
- WHAT’S IN THE BOX – Includes 1 SMART Brick (approx. 45 minutes of play per charge, compatible with other SMART Play sets), 1 SMART Charger, 4 SMART Tags, a brick-built Pikachu figure, a treehouse playset and more
Check what the box includes before expecting interactive features
Look for the SMART Play set category and the component list on the box or product listing. The word “Compatible” refers to the set’s relationship to the SMART Play system; it should not be read as a promise that all SMART Play hardware is included.

| Compatible | SMART Tags, but no SMART Brick | A SMART Brick from an All-in-One set is needed to activate the set’s SMART Play features. |
If you already own an All-in-One set, its SMART Brick can be used with SMART Play-compatible sets according to LEGO’s guidance that SMART elements can combine with LEGO sets. If you do not own one, a Compatible set’s tags alone do not supply the missing SMART Brick. The model can still be built as a LEGO set; the missing component matters for interactive SMART Play, not ordinary construction.
Rank #3
- INCLUDES 2 LEGO SMART BRICKS – The LEGO Pokémon SMART Play: Charizard vs. Jolteon Ultimate Battle (72167) building toy is a LEGO SMART Play All-in-One Set, which features 2 Pokémon figures, 2 SMART Bricks, a SMART Charger and 4 SMART Tags to power up interactive play
- INTERACTIVE POKÉMON BATTLES – The 2 SMART Bricks will respond with lights, sounds and other interactions when they move close to a SMART Tag or react to kids' movements
- YOU ARE THE TRAINER NOW – When the 2 responsive SMART Bricks are added to the Charizard and Jolteon figures, they will respond with different SMART Play interactions based on how kids move each Pokémon
- SCREEN-FREE PLAYTIME – Kids can join friends and family to train the Pokémon, then pair them up for epic pretend play battles that are full of fiery blasts and bursts of electricity
- WHAT’S IN THE BOX – Includes 2 SMART Bricks (approx. 45 minutes of play per charge, compatible with other LEGO SMART Play sets), 1 SMART Charger, 4 SMART Tags, 2 brick-built Pokémon figures, a Poké Ball, healing spray and a training station
A quick way to check a set before buying or building
- Confirm the brick system. Check that the set and the bricks you want to combine are LEGO-system pieces. Do not assume a third-party brick will fit just because the set is LEGO.
- Decide whether you mean building or interactivity. If you only want to assemble the model or combine pieces in a build, focus on the LEGO pieces. If you want SMART Play responses, check the box’s SMART Play category and contents.
- Find the SMART Brick in the component list. An All-in-One set includes one. A Compatible set includes SMART Tags but not a SMART Brick.
- Check what you already own. For SMART Play with a Compatible set, confirm that you have access to a SMART Brick from an All-in-One set.
- Check special LEGO-to-DUPLO connections separately. If your existing bricks are DUPLO, use the even-stud guidance below rather than assuming standard LEGO compatibility applies without exception.
What if my existing bricks are LEGO DUPLO?
LEGO’s published guidance gives a specific rule for fitting LEGO pieces with DUPLO bricks: only LEGO pieces with an even number of studs fit DUPLO bricks. Its examples are useful for a quick check:
| LEGO piece example | DUPLO fit under LEGO’s guidance |
|---|---|
| 2×2 | Fits |
| 2×4 | Fits |
| 1×2 | Does not fit |
| 2×3 | Does not fit |
Use this as a connection check, not as a claim that every LEGO element or construction will combine with DUPLO in every way. If a Pokémon set contains a piece whose stud layout does not meet the rule, that piece should not be assumed to connect to DUPLO bricks.
Which LEGO Pokémon sets are covered?
The official LEGO Pokémon range includes builds such as Pikachu and Poké Ball, Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise, and Eevee. LEGO has also announced builds including Arcanine and Rayquaza. These are examples from the range, not a guarantee that every named set is currently available in every market. Check the local product listing for its current SMART Play category and exact included components; product availability and packaging details can vary by market and date.

What compatibility does—and does not—mean
- Supported: LEGO places the Pokémon range within its own brick system, and says SMART Play elements can be combined with LEGO sets.
- Not the same as included: A SMART Play-compatible set may include tags but omit the SMART Brick. Confirm the box category and component list.
- Not established for other brands: The cited LEGO guidance does not verify that non-LEGO bricks connect reliably with LEGO Pokémon pieces.
- Not universal across DUPLO connections: Use LEGO’s even-stud rule and examples when checking LEGO pieces against DUPLO bricks.
