That story runs from the 1957 9P movement and the Maison’s 1963 stone-dial experiments to the 1969 21st Century collection—and, in a distinct modern chapter, Colours of Extraleganza.
How Piaget made room for colour
Piaget dates its origins to a watchmaking workshop Georges-Édouard Piaget established in La Côte-aux-Fées in 1874. The later turn toward colour was not simply a change in decoration: it depended on both the construction of the watch and the ability to work with fragile stones.

In 1957, Piaget launched the 9P, an ultra-thin hand-wound movement. The Maison says its slim profile allowed larger dials and opened up creative possibilities. In 1959, Piaget’s first Geneva salon displayed both its watchmaking and jewellery creations, an early sign of the dialogue between the two disciplines. Piaget’s official history and its account of its story set out this chronology.
In 1963, Piaget began experimenting with ornamental stones on watch cases and dials. The Maison’s history identifies that year as the arrival of its first watches with ornamental stones set into the dial. Piaget names opal, turquoise, coral and tiger’s eye among the materials used in this early colour story.

From stone dials to the 21st Century collection
Putting a stone on a dial required more than choosing a striking colour. Piaget credits stone cutters with the skill to slice delicate ornamental stones thinly enough for use in watchmaking. Its account describes watchmakers, artisans and gem-cutters working together to bring jewellery techniques and timekeeping into the same object. These are Piaget’s descriptions of its own craft and history.
In 1969, the Maison unveiled its 21st Century collection at the Basel Watch Fair. Piaget describes it as one-of-a-kind jewellery watches combining watchmaking, jewellery, fashion and contemporary design. Lapis lazuli, malachite and coral helped give the pieces their vivid colour. This historical collection is not the same thing as today’s Colours of Extraleganza: the names refer to different chapters in Piaget’s design history.

Piaget says it unveiled its first ornamental dial watches in 1996, highlighting the challenge of slicing delicate stones for the dial. That later milestone reinforces how stone-working remained central to the Maison’s approach, rather than a passing accent.

Colours of Extraleganza is a current chapter in Piaget’s broader Extraleganza universe. Its palette brings precious stones—including pink and blue sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds—together with ornamental stones such as opal and carnelian. These are examples Piaget names for the collection, not a complete inventory of every piece.

The design idea is not limited to putting many colours together. Piaget describes colour as material and signature, alongside sculptural forms. Artistic director Stéphanie Sivrière says, “Colour plays an integral role in Piaget’s history and heritage”. The Maison’s Colours of Extraleganza page presents the collection and offers boutique discovery and appointment options; specific pieces and availability can change.
How to read the stones and designs
Piaget’s examples span two useful material categories. Precious stones such as sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds appear alongside ornamental stones such as opal, carnelian, lapis lazuli, malachite, turquoise, coral and tiger’s eye. The distinction helps explain the collection’s range: a jewel can use the colour and character of ornamental stone as a design feature, or contrast it with precious gems. The examples listed here come from Piaget’s heritage and collection descriptions; they should not be taken to mean every stone appears in every piece.

- Colour: consider the palette and contrast, not just the number of hues.
- Form: look at the sculptural shape and how the piece sits or moves on the body.
- Function: distinguish a jewel from a high-jewellery timepiece, where a dial and timekeeping are part of the design.
Piaget’s published descriptions establish these design dimensions, but do not give a consistent price basis for comparing pieces. No price ranking follows from the material or colour alone.

Where Extraleganza fits among Piaget’s jewellery
Piaget’s high-jewellery overview groups its offerings under categories including Extraleganza, Swinging sautoirs & cuff watches, Piaget Treasures, Piaget Rose, Limelight Gala and Aura. The Maison describes forms such as rings, necklaces, earrings, pendants, bracelets and jewellery watches. These categories help orient a visitor, but they do not share one uniform design approach, and a listed category does not establish that every piece is currently available. The 2024 anniversary collection is a separate count
Richemont’s 2024 announcement for Piaget’s 150th anniversary described a high-jewellery collection of 96 pieces grouped into three realms: “Extraleganza”, “Piaget Society” and “When mastery ignites artistry”. That figure belongs to the anniversary release; it is not the stated size of the current Colours of Extraleganza collection. Richemont’s anniversary announcement provides the dated context.
