How to Check PageSpeed in Google Chrome with Lighthouse

Use Chrome DevTools’ Lighthouse panel to audit a page’s performance, choose test conditions, and review findings as a diagnostic snapshot.

To check a page’s performance in Chrome, open it, launch DevTools, select Lighthouse, choose Performance and your test conditions, then run the audit. The report gives you a diagnostic snapshot—not a guarantee of what every visitor will experience.

Run a Lighthouse performance audit in Chrome

  1. Open the page you want to check in Google Chrome. DevTools audits the page currently open in that browser tab.

  2. Open DevTools and select the Lighthouse panel. If you do not see it, open the additional panels menu and choose Lighthouse. See Google’s Chrome DevTools Lighthouse guide for the current panel workflow.

  3. Under report categories, select Performance. You can also select Accessibility, Best Practices, or SEO if you want those audits; selecting only Performance avoids running categories you do not need.

  4. Choose Mobile or Desktop to set the device configuration. Decide whether to clear site storage according to the visit you want to represent: a first visit or a return visit.

  5. Choose a throttling approach if the panel offers the choice. Simulated throttling estimates performance under the selected conditions. DevTools throttling applies CPU and network limits during the audit and can take longer. Record which mode you use; results from different modes are not like-for-like.

  6. Run the audit. Lighthouse generates a report for the page under the configuration you selected.

Read the report as a diagnostic, not a visitor guarantee

The report includes a Performance score, metrics, opportunities or insights, diagnostics, and passed audits. Use findings as leads for investigation: they can point to potential problems and suggest areas to examine, but they do not prove that a suggested change will improve every visitor’s experience.

Establish a baseline, make one change at a time, and rerun the audit with the same settings. This makes it easier to see whether the result moved in the desired direction and to connect that change with a specific adjustment.

Keep test conditions consistent

A Lighthouse run depends partly on the local setup. Other tabs and activity on the computer, browser extensions, and stored browser settings can affect the result. Close unnecessary tabs before testing. If extensions or browser state seem to interfere, try an Incognito window; it can reduce some sources of variation, but it does not remove every local influence. Google explains these limitations in its Chrome DevTools guide.

When to use another Lighthouse workflow

DevTools is useful when you want to inspect the page open in your browser and choose local audit settings. Google also documents other ways to run Lighthouse, including PageSpeed Insights, the command line, and Node. PageSpeed Insights provides a web interface; CLI and Node suit command-line or programmatic workflows.
