Running a Plex Server for Dozens of Users? Tautulli Makes Activity Easier to Track

If managing a Plex server for a large group feels chaotic, Tautulli is a useful tool to consider. It monitors Plex activity and provides information about streams, users, watch history, and library statistics. That visibility can help you understand what is happening on your server; it does not automate every part of running a community of users or guarantee that administration will take less time.

The headline’s “one tool” is an inference: Tautulli is the best fit if the main problem is keeping track of activity. If users need a way to request films and shows, the relevant tool category is different.

What Tautulli does for a Plex server

Tautulli is a monitoring and analytics application for Plex. Its documented features include a view of current activity, notifications for stream activity and newly added media, watching history, user information, and library statistics. See the Tautulli documentation and the project repository.

For an administrator, those features can make it easier to answer practical questions: who is watching now, what has recently been added, and how users are engaging with the library. They provide visibility, not a guarantee of fewer support requests or a measured reduction in admin time. The reviewed project sources do not publish a maximum supported user count or a quantified time-saving claim.

This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Seerr is a separate project, not a Tautulli feature. Seerr’s documentation says it emerged from collaboration between the original Overseerr project and the Jellyseerr fork. If following older Overseerr setup guidance, check that it applies to the Seerr version you are using. The older Overseerr settings documentation, for example, describes first-sign-in default permissions and global request limits; those details should not be assumed to apply unchanged to Seerr.

How to install Tautulli

Tautulli’s official installation guide includes Docker instructions. Follow the guide for your host and configuration rather than assuming a particular computer or NAS setup is required.

  1. Open the official Tautulli installation guide and select instructions that match your host.
  2. If you use Docker, follow its documented setup for persistent configuration and data volumes so the application’s data is retained across container changes.
  3. Apply the guide’s PUID/PGID guidance where relevant to prevent file-permission problems.
  4. Complete the configuration for your Plex environment using the current project instructions, then confirm that the dashboard shows the activity and library details you need.

The cited installation material does not establish a minimum hardware specification. Plex Media Server can run on a computer or compatible NAS; the documentation does not make a NAS a requirement for Tautulli.

When the real issue is Plex performance

A dashboard can help you observe what is happening, but it cannot resolve a capacity bottleneck. Plex Support explains that multiple simultaneous viewers make a server work harder, and on-the-fly transcoding adds additional load. Buffering or stuttering may indicate insufficient CPU capacity or network speed. Plex’s guidance puts the scaling issue plainly: “So, the more people you expect to view media at the same time, the more powerful the server needs to be.”

ZimaBoard 2 can serve as a NAS, router, Docker host, firewall, media server, or homelab node—delivering a flexible, open alternative to ARM SBCs, Mini PCs, and entry-level NAS systems.

If streams are struggling, use monitoring to understand activity, then assess the server and network against the workload. Plex lists computers and compatible NAS devices as hosting options and advises considering a hardware upgrade when performance is inadequate. The available guidance does not establish a particular NAS model as the right choice.

Licensing note

The Tautulli repository identifies the project as GPL v3 and notes that included Highsoft software libraries require commercial users to obtain a license. This is a caveat about those included libraries; it does not mean every Tautulli user must pay.
