To check how much space your iPhone is using, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the total used space, the largest apps and content categories, and any recommendations iOS displays. Use that information as a starting point—not a promise of how much room a new phone will need.
How do I check storage on my iPhone?
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPhone Storage.
- Review the used-space summary, app list, and any recommendations. Tap an app to see its storage details and available management options.
For Apple’s current instructions, see Manage your photo and video storage. Before choosing a new phone, note both the overall amount used and what accounts for it. Photos, video, games, downloaded music or films, and messaging attachments can affect your needs in different ways.

The figure is a snapshot. Your new phone may have a different photo library, app collection, download habits, or video workflow, so current use is useful evidence rather than an exact forecast.

No. iPhone storage is the built-in space on the device. iCloud storage is a separate cloud quota used for services such as device backups, iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive. To check it, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Apple says new iCloud accounts include 5 GB of free iCloud storage; this is not additional built-in phone capacity. If iCloud storage fills up, backups may stop, new photos and videos may not upload to iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive or other apps may stop staying up to date across devices. Upgrading or cleaning up iCloud addresses the cloud quota, not the iPhone’s physical capacity.
How iCloud Photos can affect local space
With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos are kept in iCloud while space-saving copies remain on the phone when needed. This can reduce local photo-library use, but it requires enough iCloud space and does not enlarge the phone’s built-in storage. Apple explains the feature in its photo and video storage guide.

How much iPhone storage do I need?
There is no universally right capacity. Compare your current use with what you expect to keep stored locally, then check the capacities offered for the exact model you plan to buy. Tiers vary by model and generation, and the phone’s usable space is lower than its nominal capacity because software and other system use take room.
- Measure what you use now. In iPhone Storage, record the total and identify the biggest categories.
- Think about what will stay on the phone. Consider whether you record or edit lots of video, keep media downloaded, install large games, or want your full photo library available locally.
- Compare the model’s available tiers and the price difference. Allow for expected growth, and decide how willing you are to remove or offload files when space gets tight.
As one model-specific example, Apple announced the iPhone 17 in 256GB and 512GB configurations in 2025. Those are that model’s announced options, not a rule for other iPhones. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications say a standard configuration uses approximately 12GB to 24GB for iOS 26 and Apple apps. That estimate is specific to the 2025 Pro models and can vary with model, software, and settings; it should not be treated as a universal deduction for every iPhone.

For any two capacities you are considering, weigh these factors together:
- How much storage you use now and how quickly it tends to grow.
- How much video, photos, games, and other media you keep downloaded locally.
- Whether you are comfortable managing, transferring, or offloading files.
- The price difference for the exact model and capacities available.
How to free space safely before deciding
- Review iPhone Storage recommendations. iOS may suggest actions based on your device’s contents.
- Remove content you no longer need. Check large downloads and app data before deleting.
- Transfer media you want to keep elsewhere. Apple suggests transferring photos or videos to a computer if they do not need to remain on the phone.
- Merge duplicate photos or videos. Review duplicates before removing anything.
Take care if iCloud Photos is enabled: deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Back up wanted items before deleting them. For cloud-space cleanup, Apple also recommends reviewing backups and removing unneeded content; those steps free iCloud quota rather than built-in iPhone space.
