Treat accuracy and map coverage as questions to verify: a feature list or a large course count is not independent proof that yardages are more precise or your local course is mapped correctly.
Start with the distances and golf details you will use
For many golfers, the essential information is practical: distances to the front, middle, and back of the green, plus distances to hazards and layup points. A watch can make those numbers easier to check during a round, but they are not the same as an exact distance to the pin. Garmin’s Approach S50 owner’s manual explains that front, middle, and back distances are calculated because pin positions change.

Consider whether you also want a hole map, touch targeting, scorekeeping, shot-distance tracking, or PlaysLike distance, which adjusts the displayed distance for elevation. These features can be useful, but they do not all matter equally to every golfer. If you mainly want basic yardages, pay for the features you will actually use rather than assuming a longer list is automatically better.

How to assess GPS accuracy
GPS capability tells you that a watch can use satellite positioning; it does not tell you how far its readings deviate from the correct position in real playing conditions. The Garmin manuals describe how the S50 and S70 use golf courses and location information, but the cited material does not give a measured positional-error range or a head-to-head accuracy result.
#1 Best Overall
- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode
- More than 42,000 courses preloaded from around the world
- Keep score right on the watch and upload directly to the Garmin Golf app (when paired with a compatible smartphone) to participate in weekly leaderboards
- Automatically keep track of your score and how far you hit with each club with compatible Approach CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)
So, do not rank watches by accuracy based only on a manufacturer’s feature list. Look for independent tests that disclose their method and conditions, such as the devices compared, the course or route, and how the reference distance was established. Without that evidence, compare the displayed information and practical fit, not an unsupported claim that one model is more accurate.
Course-map counts versus the courses you play
A large preloaded map library is a useful sign of database scale, not proof that every course you play is included or that its map reflects current changes. Garmin advertises more than 43,000 preloaded full-color CourseView maps for the Approach S70 on its S70 product page. That figure is a manufacturer claim; it is not an independent audit of individual course maps.

- Slim design with a stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display that brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
- Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation
- Leave your phone in the cart and get smart notifications sent to your wrist — including emails, texts and alerts when paired with your iPhone or Android smartphone
Before choosing a watch, check whether the specific courses you play are present and whether their layouts look current. Garmin’s S50 manual describes course and hole views, hazard and layup distances, and touch targeting. Those documented functions do not establish that a particular local map is complete or accurate.
Compare battery life in the mode you need
Golf GPS runtime is the relevant figure for a round. Smartwatch-mode ratings describe a different use pattern, so do not compare them as though they predict time on the course. Garmin’s published figures below are maximum manufacturer ratings, not independently measured results; Garmin cautions that enabled features and settings affect actual runtime.

| Model and size | Smartwatch mode | All-satellite-systems mode |
|---|---|---|
| Approach S50 | Up to 10 days | Up to 15 hours |
| Approach S70, 42 mm | Up to 10 days | Up to 15 hours |
| Approach S70, 47 mm | Up to 16 days | Up to 20 hours |
Figures are from Garmin’s undated S50 and S70 owner’s manuals, accessed in 2026: S50 manual and S70 manual. Garmin notes that settings and enabled features affect actual battery life. It also says Always On display behavior uses more power; on the listed AMOLED Approach models, Always On is off during general use by default.
Garmin’s January 21, 2025 announcement also stated up to 15 hours of GPS-mode battery life for the S44 and S50. The owner’s manual specifies the S50’s figure as up to 15 hours in all-satellite-systems mode. For any watch, check the manufacturer’s wording for the exact GPS mode and case size before comparing runtimes.

Separate useful golf functions from premium extras
Baseline golf features may include green yardages, course and hole maps, hazards, layups, scoring, and shot distance. More specialized features can be valuable if they fit your game, but may add complexity or require an additional purchase or membership.
- PlaysLike distance: Garmin describes this as an elevation-adjusted distance feature on the S50. It may help golfers who want elevation factored into yardage.
- Virtual caddie: Garmin promotes this as an S70 feature. Treat recommendations as decision support, not a substitute for your own course knowledge.
- Green contours: Garmin says access requires an active Garmin Golf membership. Check current membership terms before choosing the watch for this feature.
- Club tracking: Garmin says this requires compatible accessories sold separately. Include the added accessory cost and setup in your decision if club-by-club tracking is important.
- Health, wellness, music, and activity tracking: These smartwatch extras matter most if you want the watch beyond golf rounds; weigh them against fit, display readability, and battery needs.

These examples show how to apply the criteria using Garmin’s published specifications; they are not a cross-brand ranking or proof of comparative GPS accuracy.

|---|---|---|
| Approach S50 | Course and hole maps, front/middle/back green distances, hazard and layup information, touch targeting, and PlaysLike distance. Up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and 15 hours in all-satellite-systems mode. | Pin locations change, so the listed green distances are not actual pin positions.
