Apple’s storage categories can include apps and their content; photos and videos; music, video, podcasts, ringtones, and voice memos; Mail and attachments; Books and PDFs; Messages and attachments; downloaded iCloud Drive items; and system-related storage. “Other” can include mobile assets, logs, caches, the Spotlight index, and system data. These labels describe what storage contains; they do not mean every item can or should be removed. System storage varies by device and model.

Offload or delete an app?

How to free up space on your iPhone
Start with content you recognize and can safely replace or remove. Recommendations shown in iPhone Storage may offer shortcuts, but their availability depends on the contents of your device.

- Remove unneeded downloads. Review downloaded video, music, podcasts, and other media in the apps that hold them. Delete only downloads you are comfortable getting again or no longer need.
- Inspect Files. In the Files app, review locally stored files and downloaded iCloud Drive items. Check that you have another copy if a file matters before removing it.
- Review message attachments. Large photos, videos, and other attachments can use space. Inspect them before deleting; removing a personal attachment may mean losing the copy you wanted to keep.
- Review photos and videos. Decide whether to remove media only after checking whether you need to preserve it. If iCloud Photos is enabled, deletion syncs across devices signed in to the same Apple Account; save a separate copy first if you want to keep the item.
- Offload or delete apps. Use the comparison above and inspect app details before acting, especially for apps that store data locally.
Apple says cached files are managed by iPhone and removed when space is needed; most users do not need a third-party cache-cleaner app. Content synced from a computer may need to be deselected and synced using that computer rather than deleted directly on the iPhone. Apple’s storage instructions describe these categories and behaviors.
iPhone storage and iCloud storage are different
iPhone Storage is the device’s local capacity. iCloud storage is cloud space associated with your Apple Account, managed separately in iCloud settings. Freeing or buying iCloud storage does not increase the iPhone’s physical capacity. Apple provides separate instructions for managing iCloud storage and managing photo and video storage.

Be especially careful with iCloud Photos: deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices using the same Apple Account. Preserve a copy elsewhere before deleting anything you want to retain.
Check iPhone storage from a computer
If you prefer a computer view, Apple documents connecting the iPhone to a Mac and opening Finder, or connecting it to a PC and using Apple Devices. iTunes may apply in older setups. The computer displays a storage bar divided by content type; this complements the more detailed on-device list.
