To check shielded-transaction support, identify the exact action you need—receiving, sending, depositing, withdrawing, or shielding funds—then verify that the wallet or exchange supports that direction and address type in its current documentation. Zcash’s official ecosystem directory is a useful starting point: it distinguishes wallets marked “shielded by default” from exchanges marked for “shielded withdrawals.” Neither a ZEC listing nor a directory badge alone confirms every route is available to your account.
What “shielded support” means
Zcash has transparent addresses, commonly beginning with t, and shielded addresses, commonly beginning with z. Sapling addresses include forms beginning with zs; older Sprout addresses include forms beginning with zc. In a transparent transaction, addresses and amounts are public. In a shielded-to-shielded transaction, the sender, receiver, and amount are not revealed on the public blockchain, though the fee remains visible. See Zcash’s address and transaction overview.

Unified addresses combine multiple address types in one format to improve interoperability. Some wallets can automatically shield ZEC received through a unified address, but that behavior depends on the wallet. A unified address by itself does not establish that an exchange or another wallet accepts it. Check Zcash documentation on unified addresses and the provider’s own instructions.

“Supports ZEC” is not specific enough. Confirm whether a service supports shielded receiving or deposits, shielded sending or withdrawals, shielding (moving funds from transparent to shielded within a wallet), and deshielding (moving shielded funds to a transparent address). Support can vary by direction, address family or pool, software version, region, and account status.

Verify support in five steps
- Define the route. Decide whether you are receiving ZEC into a wallet, withdrawing from an exchange to a wallet, depositing shielded ZEC at an exchange, or shielding transparent funds after receipt. These are distinct capabilities.
- Use the official Zcash ecosystem directory as a shortlist. Check its current filters and badges for “shielded by default” wallets and exchanges marked for “shielded withdrawals.” The directory currently includes wallet examples such as Zodl (formerly branded Zashi), Zingo!, and Edge Wallet; Gemini appears with the shielded-withdrawals marker. Entries can change, so consult the live Zcash ecosystem directory rather than relying on a saved list.
- Confirm the exact route in the provider’s current documentation. Look for an explicit statement about shielded deposits or withdrawals in the direction you need. Check accepted address formats or pools, geographic availability, minimums, limits, and any maintenance notice. If the instructions only say “ZEC supported,” ask the provider or do not assume shielded support.
- Check both endpoints. The sending and receiving services must support compatible address types for the intended route. If one endpoint only supports transparent addresses, that leg is not a shielded transaction.
- For a first transfer, consider a small test amount. Do this only after confirming the provider’s instructions and network. Check for confirmation and verify the receiving wallet’s balance before sending more. Never give a support agent your seed phrase or spending key.
What to check in a wallet
Zcash’s user guide describes three broad wallet behaviors: shielding by default, letting users choose private or transparent transactions, or supporting only transparent transactions. A directory label such as “shielded by default” is a helpful signal, but inspect the wallet’s own documentation or interface for receiving and sending separately. Check whether it handles shielded addresses, supports unified addresses, and offers autoshielding if you want received transparent funds to be shielded automatically. The official Zcash user guide and Zcash documentation explain these wallet concepts.
Clear unsupported-address behavior matters too. Zcash’s wallet UX checklist says, “If there is no zaddr support, state so clearly,” and suggests the error copy “shielded address are not supported.” If a wallet’s interface rejects an address, do not try to work around the warning by sending funds anyway.

An exchange can list and trade ZEC without supporting shielded deposits or withdrawals. Check each direction in the exchange’s current official support article and in its deposit or withdrawal interface. The Zcash directory’s shielded-withdrawals marker is evidence for that direction only; it does not establish shielded deposit support or availability for every account, region, address type, or moment.
If an exchange gives you only a transparent deposit address, a transfer to that address is not shielded end-to-end. You may be able to shield the funds later in a compatible wallet, but that does not hide the earlier transparent transaction.
Compare providers by the route, not the brand
When evaluating two or more genuine options, record the same details for each provider. Use the provider’s current documentation for operational terms; the directory is a discovery aid, not a complete statement of restrictions.
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Direction | Shielded receive or deposit; shielded send or withdrawal; in-wallet shielding; and deshielding. |
| Address and pool support | Transparent, Sapling, Orchard or unified-address support, plus any documented restrictions on older formats. |
| Default behavior | Shielded by default, optional choice, or transparent only; whether autoshielding is available and enabled. |
| Operational availability | Country or region, account level, maintenance status, limits, confirmations, and fees, as stated in current provider documentation. |
| Privacy outcome | Which legs are shielded and which information remains public, including fees and metadata or network signals. |
Understand what the privacy claim covers
Shielding protects specified transaction details on-chain; it does not make every part of using ZEC invisible. Transaction fees remain visible, and metadata or IP and network linkability may still matter. A shielded transfer also cannot erase information exposed by a transparent leg. Zcash’s transaction documentation and privacy recommendations describe these limits; avoid treating “shielded” as a promise of complete anonymity.
