Check a digital game’s storage requirement on its Nintendo eShop listing, then compare it with free space under System Settings > Data Management. For a physical game, check the packaging. If you are short on space, you can archive unused downloads or use a microSD card for software data; save data stays in the console’s system memory.
Check a digital game’s storage requirement in the eShop
- Open the game’s listing in the Nintendo eShop on your Switch.
- Look for the storage requirement on the listing before you buy or download the game.
- Use the figure for that specific game: requirements vary, so a general estimate for Switch games is not a substitute for checking the listing. Nintendo recommends verifying the required storage before purchase. Nintendo Support: Not Enough Space to Download Nintendo Switch eShop Content
Check how much space is free on your Switch
- From the HOME Menu, select System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Check the available space shown at the top of the screen for system memory and, if one is inserted, the microSD card. Nintendo Support: How to Check Available Space on Nintendo Switch
Compare the game requirement with available space
Compare the listing’s requirement with the free space shown for the storage available to your download. If there is not enough room, free space or expand software storage before proceeding. The listing gives a game-specific requirement, but Nintendo’s general guidance does not establish that one figure will always include every later update or optional download. Check the current listing and the space shown on your console.

For a physical game, check the packaging
Nintendo says physical-game packaging identifies specific storage requirements, including whether a microSD card is required. Some physical games need additional storage for the full game experience, so check the package rather than assuming the cartridge contains everything needed. Archive or delete a download you are not using
Archiving downloaded software frees storage while preserving its save data, and you can download the software again later. Deleting downloaded software is another way to free space. Follow Nintendo’s steps for managing or deleting software, and choose archiving when you want to remove the software data without removing its save data. Use a microSD card for software data
A microSD card can store downloaded software, software updates, and downloadable content. It does not store save data: save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. Choose card capacity based on the free space you need now and the size of the library you expect to keep; Nintendo’s general guidance does not set one capacity as right for everyone.
