It compares the scaled image’s width with a chosen fraction of the document’s text-block width. If the image is too narrow to accommodate the layout, the package can omit the figure and print a message. This is a typesetting check—not a test of an image file’s pixel dimensions or quality.
What the image width test measures
The check uses the image’s width after it has been scaled to fit the available space, then compares that width with a fraction of the text block. The threshold is therefore relative to the document layout, not the image’s original pixel width.

The swfigure package manual describes the purpose as skipping image insertion when the scaled image width becomes too small. Its concern is the room available for a well-typeset caption beneath a narrow, tall image.

What the default value means
The manual documents a default width-test fraction of 0.25. In this setting, the scaled image must meet the package’s quarter-of-the-text-block-width threshold to be included in vertical slim mode. This is a configuration value, not a study statistic.
#1 Best Overall
- A higher fraction sets a stricter minimum width.
- A lower fraction makes the check less likely to reject an image.
- A value of
0disables the width test.
Where the setting applies
The test applies to the vertical slim (VS) display mode in swfigure, not to every image in a LaTeX document. The manual documents the DFimage command/environment and a vertical-bar-delimited optional argument for setting the width-test value. Consult the package manual for the complete syntax and argument order before changing it.
What it does not tell you
The width test does not assess image resolution, sharpness, file dimensions, or visual quality. A high-resolution image can fail the check if its scaled layout width is below the threshold; conversely, passing the check does not guarantee that the source image has enough pixels for a particular output size.

The manual says complete, up-to-date TeX Live or MiKTeX distributions include swfigure; for basic or partial installations, it describes obtaining the package from CTAN. It also states that the package requires a LaTeX kernel dated after 2019-01-01. Distribution contents and compatibility can change, so check your installed package and LaTeX version if the command is unavailable or produces an error.
