To check a Nintendo Switch 2 game’s size before you buy it, open the title’s Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store software page and read Required Storage Space. For a boxed release, read the required-storage figure on the front of the package. Then, on the console, go to HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management and compare the published requirement with the free space shown for internal storage or an inserted microSD Express card. If the requirement is larger than your available space, delete unused software or install a compatible microSD Express card before downloading.
What the “required storage” number means
The figure Nintendo publishes is the free space needed to download that game’s digital data. It is a title-specific requirement, not a universal estimate for all Nintendo Switch 2 games. Nintendo states that “storage requirements vary by game,” so a size you saw for one title cannot reliably predict another title’s size.

The number also describes the game information available for the current listing or package. Publishers can add patches and downloadable content after launch, which may require additional space later. Treat the published figure as the amount you must be able to accommodate for the initial download, then leave practical headroom if you expect to install updates or DLC.

Console capacity is not identical to advertised capacity. Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, but system-reserved space means the usable amount is lower. The free-space figure in Data Management is the number that matters for a purchase, not the 256 GB headline figure.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Check a digital game before buying
Use the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store listing
- Open the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch 2, or view the title’s official Nintendo Store software page.
- Open the game’s complete software listing rather than relying on a search result, trailer, review, or a retailer’s short description.
- Find the entry labeled Required Storage Space.
- Record the amount shown for the digital version. Nintendo says the eShop page shows the amount of free space needed for the digital version of the game.
- Before completing the purchase, compare that amount with the free space shown in HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management.
Nintendo’s support guidance says, “The amount of free space required to download the data is also available on the Nintendo Store or Nintendo eShop page for the digital version of the game.” Checking the listing immediately before purchase is important because a title’s requirement can change when its publisher adds data.
What to record
Write down the exact number and unit displayed, including whether it is expressed in GB or another unit. Do not substitute a generic average, the size of a different edition, or the space shown on a retailer page. If the listing offers separate versions or editions, verify the requirement for the version you intend to buy.
Check a physical release
Read the front of the package
For a physical Nintendo Switch 2 release, look at the front of the game packaging for the required-storage figure. Nintendo’s physical-software guidance also directs readers to the official software page, so use the title’s Nintendo listing as a second check when it is available.

- Identify the exact physical edition and region you are buying.
- Read the storage requirement printed on the package front.
- Check the corresponding Nintendo software page for the current requirement and any edition-specific information.
- Compare the figure with the free space reported by Data Management before inserting a game-key card or starting any download.
A physical purchase does not automatically mean that every game file is on the card. In particular, a game-key card contains the launch key rather than the complete game. Its packaging still states the amount of free space needed for the download.
See how much space your Switch 2 has left
Open Data Management
- From the HOME Menu, select System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Read the free-space figures shown for the console’s internal storage and, if one is inserted, the microSD Express card.
Nintendo describes this path directly: “You can see this by going from the HOME Menu to System Settings, then Data Management.” Use the currently available figure, not the total capacity printed on a console or card package.
Understand the two storage locations
Data Management can show internal storage and an inserted microSD Express card as separate locations. A game may fit in the combined capacity you own but fail to install if the location being used does not have enough free space. Check the figure for the storage destination that the system will use, and confirm that the game and any required download can be accommodated there.

Internal storage is 256 GB in total before space reserved for the system is accounted for. Because usable capacity is lower, the Data Management reading is the authoritative answer to “Will this fit?”

Use a simple pass-or-fail test
Compare the title’s Required Storage Space figure with the corresponding free-space number in Data Management:
- Free space equal to or greater than the published requirement: the initial digital download should fit the stated storage requirement.
- Free space lower than the published requirement: make room before buying, downloading, or redeeming the game.
Nintendo advises that you should always verify the required storage space before making your purchase. Do this check even when the console appears to have plenty of capacity, because installed games, captures, updates, and other content reduce the currently available amount.
Allow for later updates and DLC
The published requirement is tied to the game information available on the listing or package at the time you check it. Updates and DLC can add data after launch. A game that fits on day one may therefore need additional free space later. The safest practice is to avoid filling the console or card to the last available unit when you expect to keep several games installed.
Do not invent a universal “extra percentage” for updates; the amount varies by title. Recheck the game’s eShop entry or packaging information if the publisher releases substantial additional content, and use the free-space reading in Data Management before starting that download.
Game-key cards: what you must download
The card is not the complete game
A game-key card contains the launch key rather than the complete game data. To use one, Nintendo says, “To download the game, an internet connection and enough free space in your Nintendo Switch 2 system memory or microSD Express card are required.” The download requirement is printed on the game-key-card packaging and is also available on the Nintendo eShop page.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Check the storage amount on the game-key-card package or the title’s eShop listing.
- Connect the console to the internet.
- Insert the game-key card and begin the required download.
- Ensure the selected storage location has at least the published free space.
- Keep the game-key card inserted when you launch the title after installation.
The last step is easy to miss: after the download, the game-key card must remain inserted to launch the game. Buying the physical card does not remove the need for an internet connection or local storage.
How to decide whether a game-key card will fit
Use exactly the same comparison as for a digital purchase. The relevant number is the download requirement printed on the package or listed by Nintendo, while the relevant capacity is the current free space shown in Data Management. If the numbers do not meet, free space first; the card itself cannot supply the missing storage for the complete game data.
Expand storage with a compatible microSD Express card
Use the format supported by Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for game storage. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not treat older, non-Express expansion cards as the game-storage standard for this console, so do not rely on a legacy microSDXC card when planning a Switch 2 game library.
Cards with capacities up to 2 TB are supported. A first-use system update over the internet is required for a microSD Express card. Plan that update before you need the card for an urgent game download.
What to check when choosing a card
- Capacity: choose enough space for the number and size of games you expect to keep installed, while allowing room for updates and DLC.
- Compatibility: verify that the card is explicitly microSD Express and intended for Nintendo Switch 2 use.
- Warranty: compare the manufacturer’s warranty terms, not just the capacity printed on the label.
- Price per usable gigabyte: compare cost against the capacity you can actually use, rather than selecting solely by the lowest sticker price.
- Library size: estimate your expected installed library from each game’s current published requirement, then choose a capacity that does not leave the card full immediately.
Capacity is a planning figure, not a promise that every advertised gigabyte will be available for games. After installation, rely on Data Management’s free-space reading.
Free space when a game will not fit
Delete content you no longer use
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Review the content occupying internal storage and any inserted microSD Express card.
- Delete unused software or other content you no longer need, using the options provided in Data Management.
- Return to the storage overview and confirm that the free-space figure now meets the game’s published requirement.
Use the updated free-space number after each deletion. The goal is not to reach the console’s nominal capacity; it is to exceed the specific requirement shown for the game, with practical room for later updates if you intend to install them.

Install a microSD Express card instead
- Obtain a microSD Express card that is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
- Insert it into the console according to Nintendo’s hardware instructions.
- Connect to the internet and complete the first-use system update required for the card.
- Open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management and confirm that the card appears with available free space.
- Start the game download only after the displayed capacity meets or exceeds the title’s requirement.
If the card does not appear as expected, do not assume that its printed capacity is available. Check that it is the Express format supported by Switch 2 and that the required first-use update has completed.
A purchase-day checklist
Run this checklist for every new title because requirements vary by game:
- Identify whether you are buying a digital release, a standard physical release, or a game-key card.
- Find the title’s current Nintendo software listing.
- Read Required Storage Space for the digital version, or read the required-storage figure on the physical or game-key-card package.
- On the console, open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management.
- Check free space in internal storage and on the inserted microSD Express card, if present.
- Confirm that the destination you will use has at least the published requirement.
- For a game-key card, confirm that you have an internet connection and remember that the card must remain inserted to launch the game.
- If the comparison fails, delete unused software or add a compatible microSD Express card before starting the download.
- Recheck the listing when substantial updates or DLC are announced, because they can add data.
Common mistakes and fixes
Looking only at the console’s “256 GB” label
The internal storage total is 256 GB, but system-reserved space reduces what games can use. Open Data Management and read the current free-space value instead of calculating from the advertised total.
Assuming a physical card contains every file
A game-key card carries the launch key and requires a download. Check its printed requirement, connect the console to the internet, and keep the card inserted for launching.
Using a legacy expansion card
Nintendo Switch 2’s game-storage guidance specifies microSD Express. A non-Express card is not the format to choose for Switch 2 game storage; verify the Express designation before purchase.
Checking a generic size list
Storage requirements vary by game and can change as publishers add data. Use the current Nintendo listing or the exact package for the title and edition you are buying.

Checking capacity only after purchase
Nintendo recommends verifying the required space before making the purchase. Compare first so you can free space or obtain a compatible card without a stalled download.
How to plan capacity for a growing library
Start with the games you will keep installed
List the titles you expect to play in the same period and record each current required-storage figure. Add those requirements to estimate the initial space your library needs. Then account for the fact that updates and DLC can increase that total. This approach is more reliable than choosing a card from a generic “average game size,” which Nintendo’s game-by-game guidance does not establish.
Use the console reading as your operating limit
Once games are installed, Data Management shows the remaining free space in each storage location. Revisit that screen before a large download. If the number approaches zero, either remove unused content or move your expansion plan forward rather than waiting for an installation error.
Recheck after major content releases
When a title receives an update or DLC, check the current listing and the free-space reading again. The original package figure remains useful for identifying the initial requirement, but it cannot guarantee the space needed for every later addition.
Quick answers
Where can I see a Switch 2 game’s download size?
Open the game’s Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store software page and read Required Storage Space. For a physical release, read the required-storage figure on the package front as well.
Will a game fit on my console?
Compare the published requirement with the free space shown at HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management. The available free-space figure must meet or exceed the requirement.
Do game-key cards need extra storage?
Yes. A game-key card does not contain the complete game data. It needs an internet connection and enough free space in internal storage or on a microSD Express card, and the card must stay inserted to launch the game.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
