How to Check How Much RAM Your Computer Has—and Whether You Can Upgrade It

Find your installed RAM in Windows, macOS, or Linux, then check the exact computer model’s official specifications to learn whether its memory can be upgraded.

Check your computer’s memory in its operating system, then use the exact model number and its manufacturer’s documentation to find out whether you can upgrade it. The RAM figure shown in Windows, macOS, or Linux tells you what the system recognizes; it does not show whether memory is removable or how much the computer supports.

Check how much RAM is installed

Use the method for your operating system. The displayed total may differ slightly from the capacity advertised on a product page because operating systems report memory in different units and some memory is reserved for system use.

Windows 10 and Windows 11

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance > Memory. The page shows the memory Windows recognizes and may also show details such as memory speed and slots used.

For another view, open System Information and find Installed Physical Memory. On supported ASUS computers, MyASUS may also show system information. Treat Task Manager’s “slots used” figure as an indicator, not proof that a slot is physically available or usable in your exact model.

macOS

Choose Apple menu > About This Mac to see the memory recognized by macOS. The result answers how much memory the Mac has; Apple’s support information for the specific model determines whether it can be removed or upgraded.

G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 RAM (AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0) 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 6000MT/s* CL36-36-36-96 1.35V Desktop Computer Memory U-DIMM - Matte Black (F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5)
  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Linux

Open a terminal and run:

cat /proc/meminfo

Read the MemTotal value. It is an operating-system report, not a service manual or confirmation that the computer has an upgradeable slot. Utilities such as dmidecode may show additional device details on some systems, but a reported slot count alone does not prove that a physical slot is usable.

Find out whether your computer’s RAM can be upgraded

Upgradeability depends on the exact computer and its memory configuration, not just the operating-system total or the product-family name. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and service instructions before buying memory.

Corsair Vengeance RGB RS DDR5 16GB (2 x 8GB) Up to 6000MHz AMD Intel RAM | Desktop Gaming Memory, AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible, CL36, Grey, CMG16GX5M2E6000Z36
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
  • Dynamic RGB Lighting: Individually addressable RGB lighting delivers vibrant effects through a sleek, understated panoramic diffuser
  • Onboard Voltage Regulation: Onboard voltage regulation for reliable power at high frequencies
  • Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
  1. Identify the complete model. Find the full model name and product or model number in System Information, on the computer’s label, or in the manufacturer’s utility. A name printed on the box may be a marketing name rather than the complete model identifier.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model. Look for its technical specifications and user guide, maintenance or service guide, or memory-upgrade instructions. ASUS directs owners to the model page’s Tech Specs; HP points to its Maintenance and Service Guide or Upgrading and Servicing Guide.
  3. Check how the memory is built and serviced. Documentation may describe RAM as soldered or onboard, integrated, removable, or a combination. It may also say that a component is upgradeable only by a service provider.
  4. Compare the supported configuration with what is installed. Confirm the maximum total and per-slot capacity, number of slots, current slot population, memory generation and form factor, speed, and any restrictions on module combinations or matched slots.
  5. Choose a module only after those details match. If the official documentation does not settle the question, ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider rather than relying on a generic scanner or a guess.

Some designs mix fixed memory with a replaceable module. ASUS, for example, describes one configuration with 8 GB of onboard memory that cannot be replaced plus a SO-DIMM slot expandable by up to 8 GB, for 16 GB total in that specific example. It is not a general limit or a prevalence estimate for computers overall.

What to verify before buying RAM

A module is a fit only if the exact model’s documentation confirms a replaceable slot and supports the proposed configuration. Check all of these details together:

Patriot Viper Venom DDR5 RAM 16GB (2X8GB) 6000MT/s CL36 Desktop Memory | Voltage: 1.35v; Supports Intel XMP and AMD EXPO; Module type: UDIMM.
  • Capacity: 16GB(2 x 8GB)
  • Tested Frequency Profile 1: PC5-48000 (6000MT/s)
  • Tested Timings: 36-46-46-110
  • Feature Overclock: XMP 3.0 & EXPO overclocking supported
  • On-Die ECC
  • Memory type and generation: match the type supported by the computer; do not assume that memory from another generation will work.
  • Form factor: laptops commonly use SO-DIMM modules, while desktops commonly use DIMMs, but confirm the specific model’s documentation.
  • Capacity limits: check total system capacity and any lower per-slot limit.
  • Slots and configuration: establish which slots are physically present, which are populated, and whether the manufacturer requires particular combinations.
  • Speed and installation requirements: follow the model’s specifications and official procedure rather than inferring compatibility from a software readout.

Search for memory using the exact computer model plus its documented memory type and form factor. A generic listing that says “laptop RAM” or matches only the reported speed does not establish compatibility.

When the answer depends on the Mac model

Mac memory arrangements vary, so one model’s instructions should not be applied to another. Apple documents some iMac models with an access door and removable memory; other models do not have user-removable memory. For 24-inch iMac models released in 2021 or later, Apple says memory is integrated into the Apple M-series package and cannot be upgraded after purchase.

  • Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
  • Hand-Sorted, Tightly-Screened Memory Chips: Ensure consistent high-frequency performance with aggressive timing options

Where an iMac has a RAM access door, Apple’s installation instructions call for a Phillips screwdriver. That tool and procedure apply to the models covered by those instructions, not to every Mac or computer. Check Apple’s instructions for the exact model and follow any stated service guidance.

How much RAM should you add?

There is no universal amount that suits every workload, and the installed-memory screen cannot determine what your computer supports. First establish the model’s supported maximum and configuration. Then choose a capacity based on your work and budget, while respecting the manufacturer’s limits. If the memory is integrated or soldered with no supported replaceable slot, adding a module is not an available upgrade path.
