How to Check Hardware-Wallet Firmware Signatures and Safely Update Firmware

Use the wallet maker’s official application, let its built-in authenticity checks run, confirm the update on the physical device, and never enter recovery words, a PIN, or a passphrase. A firmware prompt delivered by email, QR code, chat, or an unfamiliar website is not a safe update source.

Modern hardware wallets verify firmware in more than one place. Depending on the model, a signed bootloader, a companion-app revision and hash check, or secure-element attestation must approve the image before normal wallet functions continue. If any signature, revision, hash, or genuine-device check fails, stop using the wallet for signing and follow the manufacturer’s official support process.

What firmware-signature checking protects you from

Firmware is the code that controls a hardware wallet’s screen, buttons or touch sensors, USB communications, and cryptographic operations. A genuine update should come from the manufacturer, match the exact device model, and remain unaltered between publication and installation. A counterfeit device or modified firmware could display convincing addresses while changing what is signed, expose secrets, or disable the device’s security checks.

Authenticity is normally enforced as a chain of controls rather than a single checksum:

  • Release identity: the application confirms that the version and release identifier are known for your model.
  • Cryptographic integrity: a hash or signature proves that the installed bytes match an approved release.
  • Boot-time enforcement: the bootloader or secure element refuses to execute firmware that is not authorized.
  • Physical consent: the wallet requires an action on its own hardware before installation.
  • Post-update validation: the application and, where available, the device display the resulting version or firmware fingerprint.

These controls answer different questions. A version number alone does not prove that the code is genuine, and a download from a genuine-looking site does not prove that the file was not modified. Let the official workflow perform every check it supports.

Before you start: a safe-update checklist

Have these items ready before opening the update screen:

  • The exact wallet model and edition, including whether it is a model variant with different firmware.
  • The current firmware version shown on the device or in the manufacturer’s official application.
  • The latest official companion application, installed from the manufacturer’s website or a package whose signature you can verify.
  • Your recovery backup stored offline and readable. Do not type the words into a computer or phone to “test” them.
  • A reliable USB connection and enough uninterrupted time for the device to restart.
  • The official release notes for the exact model and version, if the vendor publishes them.

Close other programs that might interrupt USB access, and do not update while the cable can be pulled accidentally. If the wallet is used with a watch-only or transaction application, finish or cancel pending operations first.

Safe firmware-update procedure

  1. Identify the device. Read the model and current firmware version on the wallet itself and in the official app. Do not rely on a retailer listing, a photograph, or a message that claims to identify the model.
  2. Obtain the companion app from an official channel. Download it from the manufacturer’s official site or use the vendor’s signed distribution package. Advanced users can verify an installer with GPG when the vendor documents that method; verification is complete only when GPG reports a good signature and the complete official signing-key fingerprint matches the vendor’s published fingerprint.
  3. Open the update screen inside the app. A normal update should be offered by the official application. Do not search the web for a separate firmware binary unless the vendor’s documented manual-verification procedure specifically requires one.
  4. Read the model, version, and release notes. Check that the update applies to your exact device and that any migration, reset, or compatibility warning is understood before continuing.
  5. Approve the update on the wallet. Confirm using the device’s own buttons or touch sensors. The app or a computer prompt is not a substitute for this physical confirmation.
  6. Keep the connection stable. Do not unplug the wallet, close the companion app, allow the computer to sleep, or switch USB ports during installation. Wait through the device restart and for the app to report completion.
  7. Check the result. After restart, read the firmware version on the device and in the app. If the model supports a displayed firmware hash, compare it with the value for the exact model, edition, and version in the manufacturer’s official release record.
  8. Run a small post-update check. Confirm that the app recognizes the same wallet, that account addresses are the expected ones, and that no genuine-device or firmware warning is shown. Do not send a transaction merely to test an update.

A firmware update never requires recovery words. It also should not require a private key, PIN, or passphrase to authorize the firmware itself. If a screen, website, support chat, or pop-up asks for any of these, stop and close it.

How the major verification methods work

Trezor: revision check, challenge-based hash check, and bootloader signatures

Trezor Suite performs two distinct checks. The revision check confirms that the firmware version and its RevisionID are known for the device. The hash check challenges the device so that only the official, untampered firmware can answer correctly. Trezor describes this as a mathematical challenge that can be passed only when the official and untampered version is present.

Before firmware runs, the bootloader verifies its signature, and the update process requires confirmation on the physical wallet. If a revision or hash check fails, Suite can identify the device as counterfeit or unsafe and restrict functions. Treat that restriction as a stop signal rather than trying another download.

Trezor documentation warns that installing unsigned firmware can wipe a device. An unsigned or self-built image is therefore not a routine update path, even if it came from someone who claims to be helping. Keep the recovery backup offline, and use unofficial builds only in a controlled development context where you understand the reset consequences.

BitBox02: signed releases, bootloader enforcement, and an optional startup hash

BitBox02 firmware releases are signed. Its bootloader verifies the signature before accepting and starting the firmware. The normal update is initiated in BitBoxApp, approved with the device’s touch sensors, and completed with the device left connected until it restarts and the app confirms success.

BitBox02 can show a cryptographic firmware fingerprint at startup. Advanced users may enable that display and compare the value with the matching official release value for the exact model and version. Manual hash checking is optional for most owners; disabling the startup display does not reduce the normal security provided by signed firmware and bootloader verification.

BitBox’s explicit rule is simple: “A firmware update never requires recovery words.” A request for those words is evidence that you are outside the legitimate update flow.

Ledger: secure-element attestation during firmware actions

Ledger’s normal process is based on genuine-device attestation rather than asking ordinary users to download a public firmware binary and calculate a checksum. The secure element signs a challenge, and Ledger’s hardware-security infrastructure verifies the response and certificate. Ledger states that this check is used for critical firmware actions, including every firmware update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is a secure channel between the genuine device and the official application. If a clone were running rogue firmware, the attestation would fail and the application would reject the device as non-genuine. When a genuine check fails, stop using the wallet for signing and contact official support; do not look for an alternate firmware file.

Automatic checks versus independent verification

Most owners should use the vendor’s application and its built-in checks. Independent verification is useful when you are auditing a release, building from source, or operating in an environment that requires reproducible evidence. It is not a reason to bypass the normal signed-update path.

Wallet Primary trust mechanism What the user normally does Independent verification documented by the vendor Physical confirmation and mismatch response
Trezor Signed bootloader, Suite revision check, and device hash challenge Start the update in Trezor Suite, review the model and version, and approve on the wallet Advanced developers can download the official image with trezorctl, zero the model-specific signature bytes, and compare a SHA-256 hash with a local build. Official documentation lists the signature offsets for Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5, Safe 7, and Trezor One. Physical confirmation is required. A failed revision or hash check can mark the device unsafe or counterfeit and restrict functions.
BitBox02 Signed release accepted by a verifying bootloader Update through BitBoxApp, approve with the touch sensors, and keep the device connected through restart Enable the startup firmware-hash display and compare it with the exact official release value. Manual checking is optional for normal users. Touch confirmation is required. Stop if the app reports a signature, hash, or device-authenticity problem.
Ledger Secure-element challenge signed by the device and verified through Ledger’s hardware-security infrastructure Use the official Ledger application and its secure-channel and genuine-device checks A user-downloadable public-binary checksum workflow is not the normal method described for firmware updates; attestation is the trust anchor. The genuine-device check is part of firmware actions. A failed attestation means stop and use official support.

Checking a firmware hash correctly

A hash comparison is meaningful only when every input matches. Record the exact model, hardware edition, firmware version, and release channel before comparing. Use the release value published for that combination; a hash from another model or an earlier version will differ even when both files are genuine.

For a device that displays a startup hash, photograph or transcribe the value directly from the wallet and compare it character-for-character with the vendor’s official release record. Do not compare a value copied from a forum post, social-media image, or chat message. If one character differs, stop. Do not “fix” the result by trying another random release.

Some vendors publish a hash for a release file, while others use a challenge-response protocol or attestation that never exposes a user-verifiable binary hash. Those are different designs. The absence of a public checksum in the normal workflow is not, by itself, evidence of a problem; it means you should follow that vendor’s documented trust model.

Advanced Trezor reproducible-build verification

Reproducible verification is intended for developers and auditors who want to establish that source code produces the same firmware image approved by the manufacturer. It is separate from an ordinary owner’s update.

  1. Obtain the official source and the corresponding release image using the vendor’s documented trezorctl process.
  2. Build the firmware in the documented environment and preserve the toolchain details so another person can repeat the build.
  3. Use the model-specific signature offsets published by Trezor to zero the signature bytes in the official image and in the locally built image.
  4. Calculate SHA-256 for the normalized images and compare the complete values.
  5. Keep the signed official image for installation. A matching local build does not authorize replacing the signed release with an altered one.

The offsets differ among Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5, Safe 7, and Trezor One. Never copy offsets from one model to another. If your build does not match, investigate the source revision, compiler, dependencies, and build procedure; do not install the result on a wallet holding funds.

Verifying the companion application

The firmware checks are only useful if the application communicating with the wallet is genuine. Install the companion app from the manufacturer’s official distribution channel. Where the vendor publishes a GPG signature, import the official signing key through the documented process, verify that the key’s full fingerprint matches exactly, and accept the installer only when GPG reports a good signature.

A valid installer signature proves that the package was signed by the corresponding release key; it does not prove that an email attachment, QR code, or support message is genuine. Navigate to the official site yourself rather than following an unsolicited update link.

What an update does to your recovery phrase and keys

The legitimate update flow is designed to authenticate firmware without asking you to disclose the recovery phrase. The phrase remains under the device’s control, and the application should never request it as an update credential. Never type the words into a desktop, phone, web form, or support chat.

Do not assume that every firmware event is harmless, however. Trezor warns that unsigned firmware can wipe a device, and an interrupted or failed process can leave the wallet requiring recovery or support. That is why you should confirm that your offline backup is complete before updating and why you should not reset, restore, or install alternate firmware in response to an authenticity warning unless official support gives model-specific instructions.

If the device restarts and asks for recovery after an approved update, stop and verify the exact on-screen wording with official documentation. Do not enter the phrase into a computer. Enter it only on the hardware wallet when the manufacturer’s documented recovery procedure explicitly requires it.

What to do when something goes wrong

The app reports a signature, revision, hash, or genuine-device failure

  • Stop signing transactions and disconnect from any suspicious website.
  • Do not reset the wallet, restore it, or install an alternate image.
  • Save the exact error text, device model, firmware version, and application version without sharing recovery words or private keys.
  • Contact the manufacturer through the official support channel and follow its diagnostic instructions.

The update appears frozen

Do not unplug immediately. Give the device the time stated in the official instructions, keep the computer awake, and wait for the application’s completion or error message. If the process genuinely fails, use only the vendor’s documented recovery procedure. A second cable, port, or computer may be suggested by official support, but do not improvise a firmware download.

The app cannot see the wallet after restart

Close and reopen the official application, reconnect the cable directly rather than through an unpowered hub, and confirm that the device screen is active. If the application then reports an authenticity problem, stop troubleshooting and contact official support. Do not install drivers or firmware offered by an unknown site.

A displayed hash does not match

Check that you used the value for the exact model, edition, and version, and that every character was transcribed correctly. If it still differs, treat the mismatch as real. Do not continue signing, reset the device, or attempt another image until the manufacturer explains the result.

Red flags that indicate a fake update

  • An email, QR code, direct message, or pop-up tells you to install firmware immediately.
  • A page asks for recovery words, a private key, PIN, or passphrase before updating.
  • The update requires downloading a separate binary even though the official app normally supplies it.
  • The device never asks for physical confirmation.
  • The model, version, release notes, or hash does not match the wallet you own.
  • The application says the device is non-genuine, unsafe, or has failed attestation.
  • Someone tells you to disable signature checks, install unsigned firmware, or reset first.

A practical decision rule

Proceed only when the update starts inside the official application, targets the exact model, passes the application’s authenticity checks, and is approved on the physical wallet. Keep the connection intact until completion, verify the resulting version or supported hash, and continue only if no warning remains. Any request for secret recovery data or any authenticity mismatch changes the decision from update to stop-and-contact-support.
