Open the individual record and verify its type, holder, status, minerals, dates, area, and region. Then check the separate exploitation-licence table, application-status workflow, environmental records, consultation notices, and recent regulator or company updates before describing a project as permitted or operational.
The key distinction is legal status versus project maturity: an active exploitation licence confirms a published authorization record, not that construction is finished, environmental approvals are complete, commercial production has started, or a mine is operating.

Start with the official Greenland licence portal
The Greenland Mineral Resources Portal is the authoritative first stop for checking mineral licences and applications. It provides an interactive map, licence records, available areas, application-status information, and secure functions for applications and statutory reporting. The portal describes its purpose as allowing users to “view licences on an interactive map, identify available areas, follow the status of licences and applications and submit applications and reports through a secure login.”
You can search by company, project, licence code, licence family, or map location. The search results are divided into categories such as industrial minerals; exploration, prospecting and exploitation; hydrocarbons; scientific permits; small-scale licences; and field-activity approvals. Selecting the wrong category can make a real record appear to be missing or can lead you to treat a scientific or field permit as a mining authorization.

A step-by-step method for checking a licence

1. Search the portal by more than one identifier
Begin with the legal company name if you know it. If that produces no result, try the project name, licence code, a mineral commodity, or the map. Companies can use different names from their parent groups or promotional project names, while the record normally uses the legal holder. Searching several identifiers also helps reveal transfers, renamed projects, or nearby licences that could otherwise be confused.

2. Select the correct licence family
Use the category that matches the authorization you are investigating. Exploration and prospecting records are not exploitation licences. Hydrocarbon, scientific, small-scale and field-activity approvals have different legal purposes. Do not infer that a record in one family grants rights covered by another family.

3. Open the individual record
Record the licence code exactly as displayed. The code is the most reliable key for a repeat search and for distinguishing projects with similar names. Save the page or export the details if the portal offers that function, and note the date on which you checked it.

4. Capture the fields that establish identity and term
Write down the legal owner, licence type, minerals, issue or licence date, expiry date, renewal date if shown, transfer date if shown, licensed area, sub-location and region. The portal FAQ confirms that users can see who owns a licence, which minerals it covers and its location on a map. Read status together with dates: an “active” label without checking expiry, renewal, amendment or transfer information can produce an incomplete description.

5. Inspect the map and surrounding area
Use the interactive map to confirm that the polygon or point corresponds to the project you mean. Compare the region and sub-location with the project’s public name, and look for overlapping applications, protected-area constraints or a nearby operation with a similar name. A map match is especially important when a company has several licences in one district.

6. Preserve the evidence for your report
Quote the licence code, holder, category, status and relevant dates together. Include the portal link and your access date. If the record has been amended, transferred or renewed, explain which date is the original issue date and which is the current term.
What each licence field tells you
Licence code
This unique identifier is the best reference for repeat searches, correspondence and comparisons. Project names can change; the code is designed to identify the authorization itself.

Licence type
The type tells you what activity is authorized. Exploration, prospecting and exploitation are distinct stages and rights. Scientific, small-scale, hydrocarbon and field-activity permits should not be described as full mining licences unless the record explicitly says so.
Status
Status may show an active, surrendered, pending or other state used by the portal. Treat the status as a current snapshot and read it alongside expiry, renewal, transfer and amendment information. A pending record is not an issued licence.
Owner
The owner is the legal holder shown in the record. It may differ from a parent company, investor, operator, joint-venture brand or project promoter. Use the legal holder when identifying who has the authorization, and identify other corporate relationships separately.
Minerals
The minerals field defines the commodities covered by that record. Do not assume that a licence for one mineral grants rights to every mineral in the area. If a project is described as polymetallic, verify that the listed commodities support that wording.
Licence and expiry dates
These dates establish the published term. Check whether the portal also shows a renewal, extension, transfer or amendment. A historical issue date alone does not tell you whether the current holder or term is unchanged.
Area and location
The area, sub-location, region and map geometry help distinguish nearby projects and reveal possible overlap or protected-area issues. Use the map rather than relying only on a town, fjord or mountain name in a press release.
Licence categories you should not confuse

Use the exploitation-licence table as a cross-check
The authority’s exploitation-licence page publishes a table of company, project and licence number. It is useful for confirming a project that claims to hold an exploitation licence, but it should be read together with the individual portal record for current status, dates, area and minerals.

The published exploitation page currently lists ten active exploitation licences. The table above reproduces the named entries available for this check; it is not a substitute for the live page or for an individual record. Confirm the current holder and status in the portal before treating any listed licence as unchanged.

How to tell whether an application is still pending
Applications follow a defined sequence rather than becoming active immediately. The official FAQ states: “The application starts in the ‘Registration’ status, then goes to ‘Validation’, ‘Approval’ and finally ‘License Pending’ before it is issued as an active license.”

New exploration and enlargement applications are subject to 21 calendar days of public consultation. A consultation notice can therefore show that an application is moving through the process, but it does not prove that approval will be granted or that an active licence has already been issued.
Why an exploitation licence does not prove that a mine is operating
An exploitation licence answers a legal question: whether the authority has issued a mining authorization for the specified holder, minerals and area. It does not answer the operational questions a project-status article usually raises.
- Construction: Check whether the project has actually begun or completed construction, rather than assuming that an issued licence means facilities exist.
- Environmental approvals: Locate the environmental impact assessment, social impact assessment, approval decision, permit conditions and any compliance or monitoring documents.
- Consultation: Review public consultation notices and responses, especially where the project has changed scope or enlarged its area.
- Financing and feasibility: Look for a feasibility or development decision and evidence that the project has secured the capital and contractors needed to build.
- Production: Require a dated government, regulator or company statement confirming commissioning or commercial output. Exploration results, a development plan or a licence number are not production evidence.
- Recent activity: Prefer current updates and explain their date. A licence can remain on a list while a project is delayed, suspended, transferred or under a revised plan.
For a defensible project-status description, cite the licence record and then separately cite the environmental, social, consultation and operational evidence that supports the claimed stage.

Do not publish a single uncaveated total. The portal landing page displayed three active licences and zero applications in processing on a dashboard snapshot synchronized on 13 October 2026. The authority’s exploitation page listed ten active exploitation licences. Those figures are not safely interchangeable because they can use different categories, filters, dashboard scopes or synchronization states.
The reliable method is to state the source and scope with any count—for example, “the exploitation-licence table listed ten active exploitation licences” or “the portal dashboard showed three active licences on its 13 October 2026 synchronization.” For a project investigation, the individual licence record is more informative than either headline number.

Use Greenland’s geological data repository for context
For geological background, consult greenmin.gl, the Greenland Mineral Resources Portal’s geoscience repository developed with GEUS. It can provide exploration-relevant geological information that helps explain a project’s commodity, setting and historical work.
Data availability can depend on licence status. Information associated with a licence may be released when the licence is relinquished, so an apparently empty data record does not necessarily mean that no work occurred. Check the licence history and release conditions before drawing conclusions from what is or is not downloadable.

Use the same evidence fields for both projects. This prevents a well-publicized project from appearing more advanced simply because it has more promotional material.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling every record a mining permit
Problem: A scientific permit, field-activity approval or exploration record is described as permission to mine.
Correction: Quote the portal’s licence family and explain the activity it covers.
Using a parent company as the holder
Problem: A project website or investor presentation names a corporate group, while the legal licence is held by a subsidiary.
Correction: Use the owner field in the licence record and identify the parent only when the relationship is documented.
Ignoring expiry and transfer information
Problem: An old licence number is treated as proof that the same company still holds the same rights.
Correction: Check current status, expiry, renewals, transfers and amendments each time you update the story.
Treating “License Pending” as approval
Problem: A pending application is reported as an issued licence.

Equating a licence with production
Problem: A project is called an operating mine because it appears on an exploitation list.
Correction: Find separate, dated evidence for construction, environmental compliance, commissioning and commercial production.
Quoting a total without scope
Problem: A dashboard snapshot and an exploitation table are combined into one national count.
Correction: Name the page, category, date and synchronization context for every number.
A reusable verification checklist
- Have you searched the official portal by company, project, code and map?
- Did you select the correct licence family?
- Did you copy the exact licence code and legal holder?
- Did you record minerals, area, region, issue date and expiry date?
- Did you check renewal, transfer and amendment information?
- Is the record active, pending, surrendered or otherwise identified by the portal?
- If the project claims exploitation rights, did you cross-check the authority’s exploitation table?
- If the application is pending, did you identify Registration, Validation, Approval or License Pending?
- Did you check the 21-calendar-day consultation requirement for a new exploration or enlargement application?
- Did you review environmental, social, consultation and government-decision documents?
- Do you have separate evidence for construction or production?
- Did you consult the geological repository and consider whether data may be withheld until relinquishment?
- Is every count qualified by source, category and date?
Following this sequence produces a verifiable description: what authorization exists, who holds it, where it applies, how long it lasts, whether an application is still moving through review, and what independent evidence supports the project’s actual stage.
