Start with Epic Games Public Status, not a guessed maintenance duration. Find Fortnite’s overall state, inspect the individual service rows, and open the current incident timeline. Then cross-check @FortniteStatus on X for live announcements. During a season update, matchmaking can be disabled before maintenance officially begins, so a failed queue does not necessarily mean your game or internet connection is broken.
Wait until the incident is marked Completed and the relevant component rows are operational before trying repeatedly. Epic’s own v42.40 record shows why: scheduled downtime began at 08:00 UTC on October 15, 2026, but matchmaking was disabled 30 minutes earlier.

Check Epic’s status dashboard first
Epic Games Public Status is the primary source for deciding whether Fortnite is unavailable during a season update. It reports the service at two levels: an overall Fortnite state and separate component rows. The component view matters because one feature can fail while the rest of the game remains available.
Find Fortnite’s overall state
Open Epic Games Public Status and locate the Fortnite entry. The page assigns an operational state to the game and records active incidents or scheduled maintenance. If the overall entry says maintenance, degraded performance, partial outage, or major outage, treat that as an Epic-side condition rather than a local troubleshooting problem.

An operational overall state means Epic is not reporting a broad Fortnite failure at that moment. It does not guarantee that every island, playlist, account, platform, or regional edge is working perfectly. Continue to the component rows and any incident details before concluding that your particular problem is unrelated to the update.
Inspect the individual component rows
Expand Fortnite’s component list and check the rows for Login, Game Services, Matchmaking, Parties/Friends/Messaging, Voice Chat, Stats and Leaderboards, Item Shop, and Fortnite Crew. Each row can have a different state.
- Login indicates whether accounts can authenticate and reach the game.
- Game Services covers core in-game services after authentication.
- Matchmaking is the row to watch when queues will not start or a playlist says it is unavailable.
- Parties/Friends/Messaging covers party formation, friend presence, and related messaging features.
- Voice Chat identifies a communications problem that may leave matches playable.
- Stats and Leaderboards covers progression records and competitive statistics.
- Item Shop and Fortnite Crew can be affected independently of login or gameplay.
Read the row that matches your symptom instead of relying only on the green or red status for Fortnite as a whole. A single degraded row explains why one feature fails while other players can still launch a match.

Open the incident or maintenance entry
Select the Fortnite incident or scheduled-maintenance entry shown on the status page. Read every update in its timeline, including the state label and its UTC timestamp. The useful sequence is usually Scheduled, then In progress, and finally Completed.
The timeline is more reliable than a social-media estimate because it records what Epic has actually declared. A scheduled event can be posted before the outage starts; an in-progress update confirms that work is underway; a completed update is the signal that the incident itself has ended. If the page still shows in progress, restarting the client will not make the maintenance finish sooner.
Understand the status labels

These labels describe Epic’s current operational report, not a guaranteed end time. A component can move from degraded performance to operational without every individual session recovering at the same moment, so use the latest timestamp and your affected feature together.

Follow a season-update timeline instead of guessing
Scheduled
A scheduled entry tells you that Epic has announced planned work and gives the expected start time. Convert the displayed UTC time to your local time before planning a session, but keep the original UTC timestamp when comparing reports from different regions.

Matchmaking disabled before downtime
Epic can stop new matchmaking before the maintenance window. That protects matches from being started while backend services are being taken offline. Seeing a queue disabled before the listed start time is therefore normal during a planned season update.
In progress
When the incident changes to in progress, maintenance has started. Login may fail, existing sessions may disconnect, and features such as parties, voice chat, statistics, the Item Shop, or Fortnite Crew may show different conditions. The component rows reveal which of those effects Epic is currently reporting.
Completed
Completed means Epic has closed the incident, not that every player has automatically reloaded a working session. Close and relaunch the game only after completion if the client still displays stale maintenance messaging. If one component remains degraded, follow that component’s incident rather than repeatedly restarting.
What the v42.40 example tells you
Epic’s October 15, 2026 record for the v42.40 update provides a concrete timing example. The incident listed scheduled downtime at 08:00 UTC. It also stated that matchmaking would be disabled 30 minutes before that start, meaning queues were stopped at approximately 07:30 UTC. The status changed to in progress at 08:00 UTC and was recorded as completed at 10:02 UTC.

This is a dated example, not a promise that future season updates will last the same length. Use the current incident’s timestamps rather than copying v42.40’s duration to another release.

Cross-check Epic’s live-update channels
@FortniteStatus on X
Epic’s live-issues guidance identifies @FortniteStatus on X as an official channel for current updates and emerging issues. Check the newest post and compare its time with the status dashboard. A post can explain a newly discovered problem before a component row changes, while the dashboard provides the formal operational state and incident timeline.
Give more weight to the newest official update than to an older post that described the original maintenance window. If the dashboard says completed but a post from hours earlier says maintenance is ongoing, the dashboard’s later timestamp has the stronger claim about the current state.
Known-issues and Fortnite News or Communities pages
When the dashboard is green but a mode or feature still fails, check Epic’s known-issues information and Fortnite News or Communities updates. Those channels can describe a bug affecting a particular release or feature without indicating a platform-wide outage.

Some problems are narrower than the main Fortnite service. Epic points players toward @FNCompetitive for competitive matters, @FNCreate and the Creative Discord for Creative issues, @LEGOFN_Status for LEGO Fortnite service updates, and @LEGOFortnite for LEGO Fortnite news. Use these only when your problem is limited to that mode; do not substitute a mode account for the main status dashboard when the entire game appears unavailable.
Look for the in-game emergency message
Epic’s maintenance guidance says an in-game emergency message is posted about 24 hours before planned downtime. If you are already in Fortnite, read that message carefully rather than dismissing it. It may provide the date, approximate start time, or warning that matchmaking will close ahead of the maintenance window.
The notice is an advance warning, not a live completion signal. Once the window arrives, use the status incident for current progress. A message posted the previous day cannot tell you whether work has finished or been extended.

When the dashboard is green but Fortnite still fails
A green overall state narrows the problem; it does not prove that every service is healthy. Use this sequence to identify the scope without confusing a local symptom with a server incident.

- Read the component’s incident history. A row can be degraded while the overall Fortnite entry remains operational. Follow the specific incident and its latest timestamp.
- Check the official live-update channel. Look at the newest @FortniteStatus post and any known-issues notice for a release-specific explanation.
- Check whether the problem is mode-specific. Creative, competitive, and LEGO Fortnite can have separate announcements even when the main Fortnite status is operational.
- Retry after the relevant incident is completed. If the incident is still open, repeated relaunches add no useful evidence. If it is completed and the component is operational, relaunch once to refresh the client’s session.
This process prevents a common mistake: treating an unavailable playlist as proof that all Fortnite servers are down. The status page’s component scope is the deciding evidence.
How to decide whether downtime is still active
Use the latest official state, not a countdown copied from a community post. Compare the following four details in order:
- Authority: Epic Games Public Status and Epic support pages outrank unofficial trackers or screenshots.
- Recency: Prefer the update with the newest timestamp. Maintenance notices can change during an incident.
- Scope: Determine whether the report covers all Fortnite services, one component, or one mode.
- State: Distinguish scheduled from in progress and completed. A scheduled notice is not evidence that downtime has begun; a completed notice is the formal indication that the incident has ended.
Third-party outage trackers can show that many people are reporting a problem, but they are secondary indicators. They do not replace Epic’s component states or incident timeline when you need to know whether matchmaking, login, or a specific mode is officially unavailable.
Answering common season-update questions
Are Fortnite servers down during the season update?
Check Epic Games Public Status and read both the Fortnite overall state and the component rows. If the incident is marked maintenance or major outage, the service is officially affected. If the overall state is operational, inspect Matchmaking and the mode-specific channels before assuming a global outage.

When will Fortnite downtime end?
Do not rely on a guessed duration. Watch the incident for its completed update and confirm that the affected component returns to operational. The v42.40 incident ended at 10:02 UTC, but that timestamp cannot predict another update.
Why does Fortnite say servers are not responding after the update?
First check whether Login or Game Services is still degraded and whether the incident is completed. If those rows are operational, check known issues and the mode-specific channel that matches your symptom. A stale client message after completion may clear after one relaunch, but repeated restarts while maintenance is in progress will not bypass the outage.
Is matchmaking disabled for the new Fortnite season?
It can be. Epic’s v42.40 notice disabled matchmaking 30 minutes before the scheduled 08:00 UTC maintenance start. Check the current incident for that update’s stated lead time instead of assuming every season uses the same interval.
A practical check you can repeat for every update
Bookmark your own routine rather than memorizing a particular season’s schedule:
- Open Epic Games Public Status.
- Locate Fortnite and note the overall state.
- Inspect Login, Game Services, Matchmaking, Parties/Friends/Messaging, Voice Chat, Stats and Leaderboards, Item Shop, and Fortnite Crew.
- Open the active incident and read the newest UTC timestamp.
- Check @FortniteStatus on X for a newer announcement or explanation.
- Use known-issues or the relevant mode channel if only one feature fails.
- Read any in-game emergency message, especially the notice posted about 24 hours before planned downtime.
- Retry only after the incident is completed and the affected component is operational.
Operational states, incident timestamps, maintenance windows, and social-account posts change quickly. Recheck the official pages at the moment you need an answer, particularly on launch day for a new season or major version.
