Use the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool at the exact place and height you plan to mount the dish, with the correct Starlink hardware selected. Scan other candidate locations before committing to a permanent installation: a tree, roof edge, pole, or nearby structure in the dish’s field of view can interrupt satellite connections.
How to scan a potential Starlink dish location
- Go to the proposed mounting spot. Open the Starlink app while standing at the candidate location—not somewhere nearby with a different view of the sky.
- Open the obstruction tool. Choose Check for Obstructions, or use the app’s Find an Install Location entry point if that is the flow shown for your hardware. Starlink’s guidance is to use the app’s obstruction tool to assess a mounting location (Starlink Help Center; Standard 4 Install Guide).
- Select your Starlink hardware. The app uses the selected hardware’s field of view, so choose the kit you intend to install.
- Hold the phone at the planned dish position and height. Keep it as close as practical to the dish’s eventual location and perspective, then follow the camera scan instructions. A scan from ground level may not represent the view from a planned roof or pole mount.
- Repeat at each realistic alternative. Compare candidate positions before choosing a permanent mount. Starlink advises checking the view before ordering if the area is heavily obstructed (Starlink Help Center).
How to choose between candidate locations
Use the scans to determine whether objects fall within the selected hardware’s field of view, and whether a higher or differently placed dish could clear them. Branches, poles, roofs, and nearby structures in that view can interrupt the dish’s satellite connections (Starlink Help Center; Standard 4 Install Guide).

- Prefer a clearer view. If one candidate is less obstructed, consider whether it is practical for the cable route and a secure installation.
- Consider elevation only if it solves the obstruction. A roof, wall, or pole position may provide a clearer view, but the app scan should represent that proposed height. Use a mount compatible with your exact kit; compatibility is not universal.
- Do not assume a passing scan guarantees uninterrupted service. The phone scan is an estimate of the candidate sky view, not a promise of future service or a universal acceptable-obstruction threshold.
If the scan shows obstructions
Starlink’s stated remedies are to relocate the dish, clear an obstruction where appropriate, or raise the dish above it with a suitable mount or pole. Which option is feasible depends on the property and kit; the guidance does not establish a universal cost or performance ranking for roof, wall, and pole installations.

- Try scanning a different position with a clearer field of view.
- If considering a higher position, confirm that the mount fits your Starlink kit and that the proposed installation is secure.
- Do not climb, cut branches, or modify a roof unless the work can be done safely. If you cannot safely install the equipment or clear the obstruction, stop and seek professional assistance, as Starlink advises (Starlink Help Center).
How the pre-install scan differs from the obstruction map
The camera-based app scan helps assess a potential position before installation. After the dish is online, Starlink can create an obstruction map based on where the operating dish successfully connected to satellites. Starlink says the live map may take up to 12 hours to complete; it is a separate, post-install view of actual connections, not a replacement for checking candidate positions beforehand (Starlink Help Center).

Conditions can also change after installation: new leaves or branches, debris, and snow can create obstruction alerts. Starlink recommends a completely clear sky view for best performance; its app guidance notes that outages from a partially obstructed terminal may be especially noticeable during video calls and online gaming, without defining a universal impact for every installation (Starlink Help Center; Starlink Help Center).
