Before you leave, use Google Maps to download the map area your drive depends on, save intended stops, preview unfamiliar places in Street View where available, and compare route choices. Doing this while parked makes the trip easier to manage—and offline maps can provide basic driving guidance where a connection drops, with important limits.
1. Download offline maps for the full drive
If you might lose mobile data, download map coverage before departure. Google Maps can provide driving directions offline only when the entire route is inside the downloaded area. Include your starting point, destination, the roads you expect to take, and enough surrounding coverage for likely detours; a map that ends partway through the drive will not cover the whole route.

How do I use Google Maps offline?
On Android, Google’s instructions are to open Google Maps, search for a place, tap its name or address, open the place’s menu, choose Download offline map, adjust the area, and tap Download. You can also tap your profile picture or initial, choose Offline maps, then select an area to download. Labels can vary by platform and app version, so do not assume these Android steps match iPhone exactly. Google’s Android offline-maps help covers the download process.

To download a map for a road trip, frame the selected area around the complete planned drive, not just the destination. If your route or plans change, check that the new roads and stops still fit within the downloaded area.

What offline maps do—and do not—cover
- Available: basic driving guidance when the entire route lies within the downloaded map.
- Unavailable offline: live traffic information, alternative routes, and public transport, cycling, or walking directions.
- Not available everywhere: some countries and regions do not permit offline map downloads.
On supported Android devices, Google also documents an option to store offline maps on an SD card. It is an optional storage choice, not a requirement for every phone. Downloaded maps need updating before they expire; Google says a map due to expire within 15 days may update automatically when the device is connected to Wi-Fi. You can also update maps manually before leaving. Google’s help page explains storage and updates.
2. Save the places you plan to visit
Save hotels, trailheads, restaurants, and other planned stops in Google Maps before the trip. That gives you a prepared set of destinations to revisit instead of relying on memory or searching from scratch. Google’s official blog describes saved places as visible across devices when you are signed in, and describes saving a place from its information card. The post dates to May 6, 2014, so treat it as confirmation of the feature concept rather than a guide to today’s interface. Google Maps’ official blog post also discusses previewing places.

Saving a place is organization, not a substitute for offline coverage: if you expect to navigate without a connection, download the map area containing the stop as well.

Where Street View is available, use it before departure to get a visual sense of an unfamiliar destination or its surroundings. A preview can help you recognize the approach or understand what the area looks like before you arrive. It is not a guarantee that imagery is current, and coverage varies by location. Google’s 2014 blog describes opening Street View from a place card where available; current controls may differ. The Google Maps blog documents that historical workflow.

4. Compare route options before setting off
Review route choices while parked, rather than trying to weigh them while driving. Compare the default or fastest option with any fuel-efficient alternative Google Maps offers, considering both arrival time and the route itself. Fuel-efficient routing is a comparison, not a promise that a route will be fastest or that its estimated fuel use will match your vehicle.
Google’s Routes API documentation says eco-friendly recommendations account for factors such as engine type, traffic patterns, road type, and hill steepness. It describes recommending the efficient route when arrival times are roughly similar; when savings are small or the extra time is significant, relative savings may instead be shown for comparison. Those details describe Google’s developer API and should not be taken as a guarantee that every control or estimate appears in every consumer version of Maps. Google cautions that consumption estimates are for comparing routes, not predicting exact fuel use for an individual car. A quick pre-departure check
- Confirm the offline map covers the entire planned route and relevant detours.
- Update downloaded maps over Wi-Fi if needed.
- Save planned stops and preview unfamiliar destinations where Street View is available.
- Compare route choices before driving, and do not rely on offline Maps for live traffic or alternate routes.
