There is no single official Bitcoin price: an aggregate is a broad reference, while an exchange quote describes a particular market and may differ from the price available elsewhere.

Bitcoin.org’s price chart offers 1D, 7D, 1M and 1Y views. Choose the period that matches the question you want to answer: a short interval for recent movement or a longer one for a broader historical view. These are chart controls, not published performance statistics.

The page displays an aggregated market price and identifies CoinGecko as its provider, with Blockchain.com as an automatic fallback. Bitcoin.org says displayed values may be delayed and are informational; it does not offer to buy or sell bitcoin at that aggregate price. Use it as a reference rather than a guaranteed trading quote.

Why Bitcoin prices differ between exchanges
Bitcoin trades on independent markets, each with its own buyers, sellers, liquidity and currencies. As a result, the quote shown by one exchange can differ from another exchange’s quote or from a multi-market aggregate. None should be presented as the one official global price.
#1 Best Overall
For exchange-specific information, use the historical data or chart for the actual exchange and trading pair you care about. A broad reference can help orient you, but it does not establish the price at which a particular exchange will fill a trade.
Compare sources on the same basis
Before comparing charts or historical records, align the details that determine what each number means:
Rank #2
- Market scope: distinguish a quote from one exchange from an aggregate covering multiple markets.
- Pair and quote currency: compare the same market, such as BTC/USD, rather than mixing dollar, euro or local-currency quotes. BIP 171 uses XBT as a token for Bitcoin and defines base and quote currencies.
- Time window: use the same start and end timestamps. Historical data may use POSIX timestamps, and records may be arranged chronologically.
- Price measure: check whether a value is a last trade, high, low, average, typical rate or another provider-defined measure. These are not interchangeable.
- Data characteristics: note update frequency, historical coverage and any delay. BIP 171 describes metadata such as minimum polling intervals and available history for interfaces that implement its specification; do not assume every website follows it.
BIP 171 is a technical proposal describing exchange-rate interface concepts, not evidence that every exchange or provider implements a common format.
A practical way to check performance across exchanges
- Choose the period. For a quick chart check, select 1D, 7D, 1M or 1Y on Bitcoin.org’s price page. For a detailed comparison, identify the exact start and end times you need.
- Choose the pair. Decide which market and quote currency matter, such as BTC/USD, and use that same currency for every source.
- Open exchange or provider history. Find historical data for the selected pair on each exchange or data provider. Record the source and the timestamps represented.
- Match the rate type. Confirm whether each series reports trades, highs, lows, averages, typical rates or an aggregate. Compare like with like where possible.
- Check transaction prices separately. If the comparison will inform a payment or trade, check the price actually available on the selected exchange. The Bitcoin Developer Guide notes that exchange APIs and aggregators provide exchange-rate data and recommends comparing at least two sources for payment-rate calculations.
Choosing an exchange requires local due diligence
Exchange availability and suitability depend on location. Bitcoin.org’s exchange directory is organized by region and cautions that exchanges vary in safety, security, privacy and control. A price comparison alone does not tell you whether an exchange is appropriate or available where you live; check the service’s own terms and local requirements before relying on it.
