The 2.5-inch Seagate One Touch Portable is a USB-powered external hard drive with capacities up to 5TB, but the available evidence does not establish that it is the fastest 2.5-inch USB hard drive overall. That superlative is meaningful only as a reviewer’s result against a stated comparison set and test setup; no benchmark figures or setup for that claim are available here. Seagate’s published specifications cover the drive’s interface, capacity, compatibility and included services—not measured transfer speed.
Is the Seagate One Touch portable hard drive fast?
Seagate specifies USB 3.2 Gen 1 (also known as USB 3.0) and USB bus power for this portable HDD. Those details describe its connection and power source, not its actual read or write performance. The manufacturer’s 2024 datasheet does not publish throughput results, and there is no independently verified benchmark here for this exact 2.5-inch model. So it is not possible to substantiate a market-wide “fastest” ranking from the published evidence.

To evaluate a reviewer’s claim that it was the “fastest 2.5-inch USB hard drive I’ve tested,” readers would need the test setup, competing drives and results. In particular, sequential transfer tests and large-file copies should be compared on the same system and connection. A result from a different drive with the same One Touch branding is not a substitute.

Why a desktop One Touch review is not a portable-drive benchmark
PCWorld’s June 2, 2026 review by Jon L. Jacobi tests an 8TB, 3.5-inch One Touch desktop drive—not this 2.5-inch portable HDD. Its test setup used Windows 11 24H2, a Samsung 990 Pro system drive, CrystalDiskMark 8 and file-transfer tests. The review’s comparisons therefore cannot establish the portable model’s speed, even when they mention typical 2.5-inch HDDs.

What are the portable One Touch’s specifications?
Seagate’s 2024 datasheet describes a USB-powered portable HDD using USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.0), with an included 18-inch (45.72 cm) USB cable. Listed capacities extend up to 5TB. These are product specifications, not measured performance results.
| Specification | Seagate-published detail |
|---|---|
| Drive type | Portable external HDD |
| Interface | USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) |
| Power | USB powered |

Seagate defines capacity using decimal units, with 1TB equal to 1 trillion bytes. The formatted capacity shown by an operating system may be lower because of formatting and other functions.

Which Seagate One Touch capacity and model should you choose?
Choose capacity based on the files you expect to keep on the drive, leaving room for growth. The datasheet lists family capacities up to 5TB; the available evidence does not establish that one capacity offers better speed than another.

When shopping, check the model number and confirm the listing is for the 2.5-inch portable HDD. Seagate also uses the One Touch name for distinct desktop HDD and SSD products.
Does Seagate One Touch work with Mac?
Seagate lists Windows 7 or later and macOS 10.12 or later as system requirements. Its datasheet says the drive works without reformatting in the stated configuration, while also warning that Mac reformatting may be required. Treat compatibility as configuration-dependent rather than assuming every Mac setup will be plug-and-play.

The datasheet describes backup and folder-mirroring functions but does not establish universal Time Machine support. Check the drive’s format and your Mac’s backup requirements before relying on it for that purpose.
What software, warranty and recovery service are included?
Seagate lists downloadable Toolkit software, including customizable backup and folder mirroring. Mirroring can help keep a selected folder aligned with the drive, but a single external drive is not a second backup copy: if the drive or its contents are lost, a separate copy stored elsewhere is still important.

The datasheet also lists a one-year Mylio Create plan and a four-month Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan, with geographic restrictions and terms for subscription redemption.
What should you compare before buying?
For a portable hard drive, weigh capacity and physical portability against the kind of work you need it to do. If speed is decisive, look for independent results that test the exact portable model and compare it with drives you are considering under the same conditions. The available Seagate specifications do not supply those results.
Quick Recap
- Capacity: Select enough space for your current files plus expected growth; allow for the lower usable capacity shown after formatting.
- Portability: It is USB powered and includes an 18-inch cable. Dimensions and typical weight vary by capacity; the 4TB-and-above figures are not universal across the family.
- Computer setup: Check the listed Windows or macOS requirement and whether your configuration needs reformatting.
- Protection: Review the warranty and country-specific Rescue service terms, and maintain a separate backup copy of important data.
- Price: Compare the current price per terabyte for the same capacity and product type, rather than comparing a portable HDD with a desktop HDD or SSD.
