Start with the game’s published PC targets, then adjust one setting at a time and compare performance in the same scene. Steam lists Low at 720p and 30 FPS with DX11 for its minimum tier, and High at 1080p and 60 FPS with DX12 for its recommended tier; both targets specify ray tracing off. These are reference requirements, not a guarantee that every PC will reach those results or a tested stutter-fix preset.
Before changing anything, note your GPU, CPU, RAM, resolution, graphics preset, DirectX mode, and whether you’re seeing low frame rates, brief hitches, crashes, or online rubber-banding. Those symptoms can have different causes.

What are the best PC settings for The Outlast Trials?
Use the Steam requirements as a starting point, not as a promise of performance. The minimum and recommended tiers pair different hardware with different resolution, frame-rate, and DirectX targets.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Both tiers specify Windows 10 64-bit and broadband internet. The full requirements are on Steam’s The Outlast Trials listing. A PC does not meet an entire tier just because one component matches; compare the processor, GPU, memory, operating system, and the rest of the listed requirements.

Choose a baseline that fits your PC
- Near the minimum tier: start with lower resolution and Low quality, with ray tracing off. This follows Steam’s minimum target; it is not a separately tested preset.
- At or above the recommended tier: start with High at 1080p and ray tracing off, matching Steam’s recommended target. If performance is unsatisfactory, test changes individually rather than lowering every option at once.
There is no verified, setting-by-setting official preset that guarantees less stuttering across current PCs. The effect of a graphics option depends on which part of a particular system is limiting performance, so compare changes in a repeatable scene and keep the ones that help.
How do I stop stuttering in The Outlast Trials?
First identify what “stuttering” means in your case. Low average FPS is different from a short frame-time hitch, a crash, or rubber-banding during online play. Rubber-banding is a network symptom; don’t assume a graphics setting will fix it.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Record your starting point. Write down your GPU, CPU, RAM, resolution, preset, DirectX mode, and ray-tracing state. Note where the problem occurs and whether it is continuous or intermittent.
- Repeat a comparable test. Use the same scene or trial and similar conditions for each comparison. A different area or sequence can make two settings profiles difficult to compare.
- Change one variable. Try one resolution or graphics-quality adjustment, then repeat the test. Avoid changing several options together, which makes it hard to tell what affected the result.
- Keep a simple record. Note the setting changed and whether the symptom improved, worsened, or stayed the same. Restore changes that reduce image quality without helping the problem.
- Check for a game-specific issue. If a reproducible problem persists, check current patch information and report it through Red Barrels’ official support route.
Lowering quality can improve frame rate in some situations, but it is not established as a universal cure for stutter. Official sources do not give verified values for individual graphics toggles, resolution scaling, frame caps, or driver settings that improve stuttering across hardware.

Should I use DX11 or DX12?
Steam lists DX11 for the minimum target and DX12 for the recommended target. That difference does not establish that DX11 is faster or more stable on your PC. If you are investigating a problem, compare the available DirectX modes as a single change, using the same scene and settings otherwise. Treat the result as specific to your system rather than a universal rule.

- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Should I turn off ray tracing?
Both Steam performance targets specify ray tracing off, so it is a sensible baseline while troubleshooting. Red Barrels’ February 10, 2026 Advent of Bogomolova update notes documented a crash fix affecting some AMD graphics cards when ray tracing was activated. If you have that specific crash scenario, turning ray tracing off is a focused diagnostic. The note does not establish ray tracing as the cause of all stuttering.

Some issues are specific to a game version and situation. Red Barrels’ July 25, 2026 Project Boneyard hotfix addressed an out-of-memory issue that could occur after repeatedly opening and closing the loadout menu while in Invasion cameras. That is a narrow issue context, not a general memory or stutter fix.
