Sign in as the family manager, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child, open Parental Controls, and adjust the restriction level or Age Level for PS5 Games. The PlayStation Family app offers the equivalent controls. Before changing anything, check the rating shown on the child’s own store page: an Xbox European listing displayed PEGI 16, but ratings vary by country and storefront.
Where Marvel Rivals’ age restriction is controlled
The main decision is made by the platform account that your child uses. On PS5, the family manager’s parental-control settings determine whether a game at a particular age level can start. Marvel Rivals does not replace those platform controls with an independent in-game age setting.

This distinction explains many “parental controls are blocking the game” problems. Changing a setting on the adult account, or changing a general console option without selecting the child’s profile, will not necessarily change the child’s permission. The setting must be edited for the child user in the family group.

Those controls can remain stricter than the game-age setting, so allowing the game does not automatically allow voice chat, text chat, purchases or unlimited sessions.

Check the rating shown for your child’s store
The rating attached to Marvel Rivals is not guaranteed to be the same everywhere. A searched Xbox listing for a European market displayed PEGI 16. PEGI and the ESRB use different rating systems, and storefronts can show different classifications by geography. Treat PEGI 16 as the rating shown in that European listing, not as a worldwide rule.
On the device your child actually uses, open the game’s store page and look for the age icon and number. Use that displayed rating when deciding which family setting is appropriate. If the icon differs from the one you saw on another website or another console, use the local storefront’s information and your own family policy rather than assuming the ratings are interchangeable.
An age rating is a threshold for content suitability; it is not a guarantee that every online interaction will be suitable for your child. Marvel Rivals includes text and voice communication, so communication controls deserve a separate review even after the game is permitted.

Change the restriction on a PS5 console
You need access to the adult account designated as the family manager. The child’s account cannot normally raise its own restriction level.
- Sign in with the adult family-manager account. Confirm that you are using the account that manages the family group, not the child’s profile.
- Open Settings. From the PS5 home screen, select the gear-shaped Settings icon.
- Choose Family and Parental Controls. This section contains the controls that apply to supervised child accounts.
- Choose Family Management. If prompted, authenticate with the family-manager account.
- Select the child user. Choose the profile that is being blocked from launching or downloading Marvel Rivals.
- Open Parental Controls. The current restriction level is shown at the top of this screen. Review it before changing anything.
- Select the restriction level. Choose one of the available presets: Child, Early Teens, Late Teens, Older or No Restriction. If a preset does not fit your decision, use the customization options instead of raising every control.
- Edit Age Level for PS5 Games. Set the game-age level that matches the rating displayed on your child’s store page and the rule you want to apply at home. This is the setting that determines whether a game at that age level is allowed.
- Select Confirm. Save the change when the console asks you to confirm it.
The preset and the individual game-age control work together. Editing an individual control can change the overall preset label to Customize. That label means the account now uses a combination of settings rather than one of the standard bundles.

Use the PlayStation Family app
If you manage the family group from a phone, the PlayStation Family app provides the corresponding controls.
- Open the app and select the child from the home screen.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Parental Controls.
- Select Restriction Level.
- Choose the appropriate preset, or edit Age Level for PS5 Games for a more specific decision.
- Save or confirm the change when prompted.
There is also an Age of This Account option. When you select it, the age level is based on the date of birth recorded for the child’s account and updates annually. This is useful for parents who want the account to follow the child’s recorded age rather than manually changing the game-age level each year. Check the account’s birth date carefully: an incorrect date can produce an age level you did not intend.

That is expected; it indicates an individual setting has replaced the standard preset.
Choose a setting deliberately instead of simply selecting “No Restriction”
There is no single correct setting for every family. A practical decision separates the game-age threshold from the other controls:

For example, a parent might allow a game at the displayed age level while keeping communication restricted and setting a zero or low monthly spending limit. Another family might allow communication only with known friends and use a fixed evening play window. The age setting should answer “Can this account access the game?”; the other controls answer “How can the child use it?”

Why a child may still be blocked after you change the age level
The change was made on the wrong account
Only the family-manager account can reliably change a supervised child’s restrictions. If the adult changed settings while signed in as a different family member, return to the child’s entry in Family Management and confirm the controls there.
The individual game-age setting is still too low
Look at the value for Age Level for PS5 Games, not just the name of the overall preset. A preset can appear acceptable while an individual age-level control remains stricter. If you deliberately edited one control, the preset may read Customize; that is a sign to inspect the individual values.
The local rating differs from the rating you used
Check the game’s page in the same country and storefront used by the child. The PEGI 16 label found on a European Xbox listing may not match the classification shown on a PlayStation storefront in another region. Use the local icon and age when choosing the PS5 level.
The child’s account date of birth is affecting the decision
If the family app is set to Age of This Account, the child’s recorded date of birth determines the age level and the value updates annually. Review that account information before assuming the console has failed to save a manual setting.
A communication or content rule is being mistaken for an age block
A child may be able to launch the game but be unable to use chat, user-generated content or other online features. That is a different control from the game-age restriction. Review the communication setting and the game’s behavior separately so you do not raise the age threshold merely to solve a chat limitation.

The new value has not been confirmed
On the PS5, the final step is Confirm. On the app, complete the save or confirmation prompt. Reopen the child’s controls afterward and verify that the intended level is displayed. If the setting is correct but the game remains unavailable, compare the displayed local rating with the value you selected and check that the child is using the supervised account you edited.

Marvel Rivals’ official moderation guidelines dated October 10, 2026, state that the game includes text and voice communications. The guidelines describe automated voice detection, real-time text monitoring, player reports and manual review. Those systems are additional safeguards; they are not a substitute for the family settings you choose.
On the child’s platform, look for a setting named Communicating and User-Generated Content or a closely equivalent label. Decide whether your child should be able to:
- Use voice communication with other players.
- Send or receive text messages during or around matches.
- Access user-generated content or interactions created by other players.
- Communicate broadly with players, or only with approved friends, where the platform offers that distinction.
The exact controls and labels can vary by platform and region. Do not assume that changing the Marvel Rivals age threshold changes these permissions. Keep communication restrictions at the level you consider appropriate for your child, even if the game itself is allowed.
The moderation guidelines say prohibited speech can be reported with the in-game reporting tool during a match or immediately afterward. They also state that enforcement can include warnings, mutes, matchmaking restrictions and long-term account suspension. Show your child where the report function is and explain that they should leave the interaction and report it rather than continuing an argument.

Automated detection can identify prohibited text and voice communications without relying solely on player reports, according to the guidelines. That does not mean every harmful interaction will be detected or that a report is unnecessary. Platform-level communication limits, family discussion and the in-game report process address different parts of the safety problem.
Spending and play-time settings should be checked separately
Allowing Marvel Rivals through the game-age control does not decide whether the child can spend money or how long a session may last. PlayStation’s family controls document separate areas for a monthly store limit and play-time schedules.
Set the monthly store limit according to your household rule, then review how purchases are authorized. If you do not want the child making purchases, use the strictest spending option available to your family account rather than relying on the age restriction to prevent transactions.

A schedule can allow the game while still preventing late-night sessions. Because these controls are independent, changing the age level should not be your solution to a time-management problem.
What is known for Xbox, Windows, Steam and Epic
The official Marvel Rivals account page lists connections for Steam, Epic, Xbox and PlayStation, and links to versions for Windows, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The verified menu-by-menu procedure above is for PS5.
For Xbox, Windows, Steam or Epic, open the family or parental-control settings for the platform account that the child uses and locate its game-age, communication, spending and play-time controls. The available labels and steps differ between services, and the material available for this guide does not establish a complete current path for each of those platforms. Do not copy the PS5 menu names into another device; use that platform’s own displayed rating and family-management interface.
On Xbox in the European listing examined, Marvel Rivals was marked PEGI 16. Check the child’s own Xbox storefront because the classification may differ in another country. The same principle applies to a Windows storefront or a linked account: the rating and the account that enforces it are the ones that matter for the child’s actual play session.

A short parent checklist
- Identify the exact platform and child profile being used.
- Open the game’s store page on that platform and record the local age icon.
- Sign in as the family manager or equivalent adult account.
- Change the child’s game-age level rather than an unrelated adult-account setting.
- Confirm the change and reopen the controls to verify it was saved.
- Review communication and user-generated-content permissions separately.
- Set a monthly spending limit that matches your household rule.
- Set play-time hours and an end-of-session action if needed.
- Explain reporting and blocking to the child before allowing online play.
- Recheck the settings after a platform update, a region change or an annual age-of-account update.
The practical answer
To allow Marvel Rivals on a child’s PS5 account, use the adult family-manager account and change the child’s Age Level for PS5 Games under Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Parental Controls, then select Confirm. The PlayStation Family app follows the equivalent path through the child’s settings. Verify the local rating first, and treat chat, spending and play time as separate decisions. Because Marvel Rivals has text and voice communication, a responsible setup reviews those permissions instead of changing only the age threshold.
