To identify an M.2 slot, first find your computer’s exact model and check its official manual or specifications. The documentation—not the connector’s appearance alone—can confirm whether a socket is for an SSD or a wireless module, whether it supports SATA or PCIe/NVMe, and which card lengths fit. M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee of a particular function or speed.
How to check whether your computer has an M.2 slot
- Identify the exact computer or motherboard. For a laptop, use its model label or system information. For a desktop, check the motherboard model printed on the board or look up the exact prebuilt system model and configuration. Revisions and configurations can differ, so avoid relying on a product family name alone.
- Open the official manual or model specifications. Search for “M.2,” “SSD,” “storage,” “Key M,” “Key E,” or “NGFF.” Check the board layout and the storage, service, or upgrade section. Manufacturers such as MSI direct notebook owners to check storage details by model.
- Use the diagram to locate the connector. Manuals may label the socket and identify its function, supported interface, and card lengths. For example, the ASUS R1606I-IM-B manual labels an M.2 M-Key connector and lists supported lengths of 2242, 2260, and 2280 for that specific board.
- Inspect the hardware only if needed and safe. Power the computer off and disconnect it before opening an accessible case. Look for a compact card-edge socket and a screw or standoff position where a narrow module would lie flat. Do not force a card or disassemble a sealed device; use the service manual or seek qualified help if access is unclear.
A connector’s location or shape is not enough to establish its purpose. Some laptops use soldered storage or other connectors that can look similar. Confirm the connector against the exact model’s diagram or service instructions.

Does the M.2 slot support an SSD, Wi-Fi, or another module?
Not every M.2 socket is an SSD socket. M.2 is used for storage as well as wireless and other network modules. Check the manual for a stated function such as storage, WLAN/Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or WWAN (cellular networking). A Supermicro A4SAN manual, for example, describes M-Key, B-Key, and E-Key sockets with different functions and supported interfaces. Those details are specific to that board; they are not a universal mapping for all computers.
When documentation gives only a key designation, look for the associated device type and electrical interface elsewhere in the specifications. A key can help narrow down what physically fits, but it does not by itself prove what the socket supports.

How to tell whether an M.2 SSD needs SATA or NVMe
Find the interface listed for the particular socket in the official documentation. It may specify SATA, PCIe, NVMe, or support for both SATA and PCIe/NVMe devices. These terms are not interchangeable: SATA and PCIe are different interfaces, while NVMe is a storage protocol used over PCIe. An M.2-shaped connector alone cannot tell you which one is wired to the system. Manufacturer guidance from SanDisk and SanDisk’s NVMe and SATA overview likewise emphasizes checking model compatibility rather than assuming physical fit is sufficient.
Key notches provide a visual clue, not a complete compatibility test. Many PCIe/NVMe SSDs use M-Keying, and many SATA SSDs use B+M keying, but implementations vary. A module may physically fit while its interface is unsupported by the socket. Do not identify SATA or NVMe from a one-notch or two-notch inspection alone.

Check the M.2 card length and mounting point
M.2 size codes use four or five digits. The first two digits indicate a nominal width of 22 mm; the remaining digits indicate length in millimeters. Common examples include:
- 2230: 22 mm wide by 30 mm long
- 2242: 22 mm wide by 42 mm long
- 2260: 22 mm wide by 60 mm long
- 2280: 22 mm wide by 80 mm long
- 22110: 22 mm wide by 110 mm long
Common M.2 module lengths include 30, 42, 60, 80, and 110 mm, according to SanDisk’s M.2 form-factor guide. The manual for your computer must confirm which lengths it supports. A visible standoff can suggest where a card mounts, but confirm the supported position and size in the documentation before buying.

Compare every compatibility detail before buying
Check the full specification for the particular slot, rather than relying on one visual cue:
- Function: Confirm that the connector is intended for storage rather than Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WWAN, or another module.
- Interface and protocol: Match the stated SATA or PCIe/NVMe support. If the manual lists both, confirm any restrictions for the specific slot.
- Key and card type: Match the device’s keying to the socket information, while remembering that a physical match does not prove electrical compatibility.
- Length: Confirm the card size and the system’s supported mounting position, such as 2242 or 2280.
- Slot-specific limits: Check for stated PCIe generation or lane limits, shared resources, or SATA-port restrictions. Do not infer limits that the manufacturer does not document.
If the manual does not establish that the exact slot supports the device you want, do not treat appearance or a successful physical fit as proof. Confirm the model-specific specification with the manufacturer before purchasing.
