To access a work or other organization’s network drive from outside its network, first get the approved remote-access method and exact share address from its IT administrator. Connect through that service—often a VPN—then open the share using your authorized sign-in. A VPN can make a server reachable; it does not provide the server path, grant file permissions, or ensure the server is online. Microsoft recommends using a VPN to reach company servers from home and advises asking IT for setup help: Microsoft Support.
What you need before connecting
Ask the network owner or IT administrator for the details below before trying to map or open the drive. The steps on Windows and Mac only work once the remote connection can reach the organization’s network or approved file-access service.

- The organization-approved remote-access method and setup instructions, such as its VPN client.
- The server or share address in the format IT expects you to use.
- The account, authentication method, and any required additional sign-in step.
- Confirmation that your account has permission to the share and that your device is allowed to connect.
Do not guess the server address: a correct share path and authorized account are both necessary. Microsoft notes that its Windows network-sharing instructions focus on a local network, such as computers on the same home or workplace network; reaching a workplace share from elsewhere requires the organization’s remote-access arrangement.
How to connect to a network drive from home
- Get the connection details from IT. Confirm the approved remote-access service, share path, sign-in method, and your access rights.
- Connect to the approved remote-access service. Follow your organization’s instructions. Do not substitute an unapproved service or expose the file server directly to the internet.
- Open the share using the address IT supplied. Use the Windows or macOS steps below. Authenticate with your authorized account if prompted.
- If it fails, check reachability and permissions. Confirm the remote connection is active, then ask IT to verify the server is online, the address is correct, and your account can access that share.
Map the network drive in Windows
After connecting to the organization-approved remote-access service, use File Explorer to create a convenient shortcut to the share. Mapping does not create the remote connection; it points Windows to a share that must already be reachable.

- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Select Map network drive.
- Choose an available drive letter and enter the folder or computer path provided by IT.
- If appropriate for your device and your organization’s policy, select Reconnect at sign-in.
- Select Finish and provide your authorized sign-in details if prompted.
If Windows cannot connect, Microsoft identifies an offline host or insufficient user permissions as possible causes. Check that the remote connection is active and ask the administrator to verify the server and your access.
Connect to a file server on a Mac
Once your Mac can reach the server through the approved remote connection, Finder can connect using the network address supplied by IT. Apple documents connecting to file servers, including SMB servers, by entering a server address.

- Open Finder.
- Choose Go > Connect to Server.
- Enter the server address supplied by IT, then select Connect.
- Authenticate with the required account or select the shared volume if prompted.
If the connection fails, ask the server owner or administrator to check that the Mac can reach the server and that your account has permission.

Do not open an SMB file share to unrestricted internet traffic as a workaround. CISA recommends blocking TCP port 445 at the internet perimeter, and Microsoft recommends blocking inbound SMB access from the internet. A public-facing file server can create a serious security risk.

Some organizations support SMB over QUIC, a TLS 1.3-protected transport for eligible Windows deployments. It must be selected and configured by the organization’s administrators; it is not a consumer setting to improvise. CISA also recommends multifactor authentication for VPN connections. Follow your organization’s instructions rather than changing firewall or server settings yourself.

Microsoft points users to OneDrive for internet file sharing and documents Azure Files for hosted file-share scenarios; those are distinct from remotely opening an existing office share. Whether either is suitable depends on organizational policy, data-handling requirements, and how access is managed. For organizations choosing remote-access architecture, CISA’s June 18, 2024 guidance encourages consideration of Zero Trust, Secure Service Edge (SSE), and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE). These are organization-level decisions, not end-user setup instructions.
